Sewing Strategies: Appliqué – Allow for Shrinkage, cut the background fabric block for appliqué 1” larger than the desired finished block size. This will allow for “shrinkage” while you work. When you trim the background fabric to size, you can re-center the work if needed. Tip of the Month: A Helpful Way to Thread Needles – cut the thread at an angle so it easily slips through the eye!

When did you join the Havasu Stitchers, Yvonne Weger? I joined at QAL last year, 2013. Everyone has welcomed me and I love everyone for being so nice.

How long have you been quilting, do you have a particular style, or just all of it!? I started quilting in 1977. I like traditional quilts.

Is quilting in the family? No. Do you do any other type of sewing, crafts? I used to do lots of other things but now mostly quilt.

How long have you been in Lake Havasu? I have been coming to Lake Havasu since 1995 for winter vis-its. My parents lived here year round since then. My husband and I have been snow birds for the last three years, staying longer each year. This year we bought a house for my Dad, my husband and myself to be more comfortable in. Where did you come from and why Havasu? I was born in Southern California. I am now a snow bird from Rapid City, South Dakota. Yesterday the high was 7 below zero!! Now you know why I am a snow bird.

Involved in any community groups? What is your favorite charity? I am a member of the Rapid City Garden Club. That is my hobby in Rapid City when I am there.

SPOTLIGHT ON OUR MEMBERS

From: lucy Wong Date: Sat, Feb 1, 2014 at 10:42 AM

Hi Havasu Stitchers and fellow quilters and sew and sews

Can you let the HS know that I am fine? I take art classes at the Healing Arts in Scottsdale on Monday and leather class on Thursday mornings at the VA Phoenix hospital downtown.

I meet the ASG sewing guild once a month for show and tell and barely make it to the Chandler quilt guild. To make it more busy, I joined a Mesa parrot club and barely can make the meetings.I made friends with a Mesa writer's group and same as above can barely make it.

I will streamline and stay with the Gilbert toastmas-ters club and let the Mesa one go. I can visit them although there are gals who are just as funny as me.

Thanks to technology like texting and emailing - I can still keep in touch. It's a lot for me to process moving to a bigger city and its all good. Love and blessing, Lucy my website blog

Book Reports

PUPPY PILLOWS We will have a box at every meeting to collect the scraps. Keep clean fabric scraps NO batting in a clean large plastic zipper bag or clean container. Just keep them handy so when we meet, you can just pull the bag out and drop it off at our pick up point. We need people to cut up pieces and stuff. We need people to sew up the pillow coverings (outsides). We will provide the fabrics. Please bring your machine and be ready to have fun and make some dogs and cats very happy and comfy.

We have a puppy pillow session planned for FEB. 20 (Thursday) at Jon Ali's Quilt and Sew from 5pm to 9pm. We will sew after the store closes. Chris will allow us to do that. All you need to do is bring your sewing machine, rotary cutter, $5.00 for rent, and any fabric you might have that can be used for the pillow covers. Please do not take any scraps or fabric to Jon Ali's prior to the sew session. Chris does not have storage space.

Future dates are March 20 (Thursday) 5p.m. to 9p.m. April 6 (Sunday) 10-?)

I think we are the only group that makes the pillows for the Humane Society. We REALLY need your help in making these items. Thanks.

Thanks Karm Webert
