Se lect ion of mater ia ls

Our experience both as engineers and manufacturers allows

us to select the most appropriate material type and material

thickness for each project.

The majority of projects utilise polyester powder coated

aluminium for exposed eaves gutters, but use mill-finish aluminium

if the gutters are hidden.

Dales provide membrane lined gutters for use in valley

and insulated applications.

Alumin ium Systems

Aluminium is usually the first choice material for the design and

manufacture of low maintenance gutters and pipes. It has a high

strength to weight ratio and is highly resistant to corrosion.

It is a proven material in this application and provides a high level

of design flexibility.

It can be precision manufactured and gives a high quality

surface finish. It is available in a range of low maintenance finishes

and unlike some very popular gutter materials is 100% recyclable,

a process which can save up to 95% of the original energy input.

Whether it's a complete eaves system, a simple gutter, or a complex

solar shading system Dales Fabrications Ltd offers the specifier a

comprehensive design, specification and manufacturing service.

Suitably qualified engineers design products under the auspices of the

quality assurance standard for design and manufacture: ISO 9001.

Each project is assigned to an individual engineer under a Project

Management system. This offers the specifier a continuous, accountable

technician from initial contact through to project completion.

Fin ishes

There are three main finishes than can be applied to aluminium.

These are polyester powder coating, PVF2 and anodising.

Polyester powder coat ing

Easily the most popular choice for aluminium coating. It offers

significant low maintenance life and a wide colour range, including

attractive metallic finishes. Dales only use coaters approved by

polyester powder manufacturers and only those that are ISO 9002

quality assured. All coating is to BS 6496. For a current colour

swatch, please contact Dales Project Management Team.

PVF2

Less widely used in the UK than polyester powder coating but PVF2

is still the preference of some clients and specifiers. PVF2 is a two or

three part wet spray coating which is applied after components are

manufactured. It does give significant low maintenance life but the

pricing system for each colour is not consistent. Dales do not use

pre-coated sheet for their PVF2 coated systems.

Anodised

A chemical process requiring a higher priced grade of aluminium

than those used for paint finishes. Whilst anodising gives significant

low maintenance life, only a comparatively limited colour range

is available.

Lightn ing Conduct iv i ty

Dales aluminium gutters and down-pipes can usually be rendered

electrically continuous using the dales lightning conductivity clip, as

part of a lightning protection system. This can be discussed with a

Dales project manager and a detail can be provided.

Aluminium gutters and pipes are not suitable as the sole lightning

protection system for any building and should only be utilised as

part of an overall lightning protection design. Specifiers should refer

to the latest revision of BS 6651: Protection of structures against

lightning for further information.

Roof Dra inage and Gutter System Des ign

Dales operate a project management system with suitably qualified

and experienced engineers. These project managers will provide a

gutter system designed to suit your individual project requirements

incorporating gutter and outlet and positioning advice in

accordance with BS EN 12056-3 for a given design rate of rainfall.

All published flow capacities contained in this literature are

calculated in accordance with the recommendations contained in

BS EN 12056-3: 2000. Dales policy is not to issue high, although

genuine, experimental results which include no margin of safety.

Loadings

Dales gutter systems are

designed to accommodate

loadings in excess of those

induced when the system is

operating at full capacity. Snow

guards are recommended where

sliding snow may cause impact

loading in excess of normal

design criteria.

Thermal Movement

Dales design all systems to accommodate the extremes of

temperature typical of the UK. For overseas projects, the extremes of

temperature specific to each country are used as the design criteria.

System F ix ings

The fixings that secure any system are potentially its weakest link.

Dales have researched their chosen fixings carefully with salt spray

tests where appropriate to investigate any possible incompatibilities.

The fixings are supplied as part of the system and their performance

is appropriate to the life of the system. All seen fixings are

pre-coated to colour match the coated products.

Cur ved Gutters

Dales are able to design and manufacture gutter systems that are a

pure curve in plan, provided they are rectangular or square in cross

section. These systems create interesting design issues and should be

discussed thoroughly with the technical services department before

detail drawings or specifications are finalised.

Faceted Gutters

Where a curve in plan involves a non-rectangular or square section,

i.e. raking or moulded front face, a specially designed facet may

provide a most satisfactory solution.

Dales Fabrications Ltd have been working within the constraints of

BS EN ISO 9001 accreditation since 1993.

Relevant Standards

The impact of new harmonised European standards means that many of

the equivalent British Standards are currently in a state of flux.

At present some of the British Standards referred to in this brochure are

obsolescent, but are still the only relevant standards.

NBS Guidance

The NBS specification clauses within Dales product literature have been

compiled in collaboration with NBS Services Ltd using NBS Plus project

specifications based on the National Building Specification.

The clauses are intended to enable the contractor to clearly identify the

product required, and the work involved in installation. (The contractor

is required to comply with Dales’ sitework instructions by NBS

Preliminaries clause A33 / 130).

Dales Fabrications operate an

environmental policy and seek to

reduce the impact of our products and

processes on the environment to a minimum.

Dales Fabrications ensure that all aluminium and steel

waste occurring as a result of our manufacturing processes is

sent for re-cycling. Continuous investment in the latest

CAD/CAM technology ensures that material usage is

optimised, reducing waste to minimum levels.

Our policy is to obtain wholly re-cycled aluminium sheet

and extrusions where available. Our factory utilises energy

efficient machinery and lighting and waste paper is saved

for re-cycling by a local firm.

Whilst protection of our materials during transit is

paramount, regular assessments are carried out to keep

packaging materials to a minimum.

The visual lines of the system are further enhanced by Dales uniqueoverstrap joint system resulting in no visible fixings on the seen faces.The method of jointing allows for the high coefficient of expansion ofaluminium. This combined with the method of fixing the system,ensures trouble free joints.

The Dove gutter system fixes directly to the fascia, eliminating theneed for support brackets.

The Severn gutter, however, utilises the top-fix internal bracket systemachieving a rigid profile whilst still providing an uninterrupted line tothe eaves.

Descr ipt ionBox gutters are generally considered to be the most efficient shape ofgutter giving maximum rainwater removal for any given size. Dalesrange of box gutters have all been designed to give front and bottomfaces visibly free from fixings.

The Dales System 75 and 120 are manufactured from 2mm thickaluminium for heavy duty use giving very high levels of rigidity areachieved.

Joining is by Dales unique overstrap joining system which allows forthe high coefficient of expansion of aluminium, this and the methodof fixing ensures trouble free joints whatever the temperature. Thejoining system has no fixings on any seen face therefore enhancingthe neat line of the gutter.

Descr ipt ionThe Dales Torent range of gutters have been developed followingcustomer demand for an elegant alternative to box or ogee typegutters. Torent systems utilise internal, top fix gutter brackets thatallow an uninterrupted line to the eaves profile.

The visual lines of the system are further enhanced by the uniqueDales overstrap joint system resulting in no visible fixings on the seenfaces. The method of joining allows for the high coefficient ofexpansion of aluminium. This combined with the method of fixing thesystem, ensures trouble free joints whatever the temperature.

Descr ipt ionDales HR gutters are a recent addition to the Dales range of guttersystems. The larger profile utilses Dales internal bracket system whilstthe rigidity of the smaller profile means that no brackets are required.

The system is jointed using Dales unique overstrap system whichkeeps the visible sur faces of the gutter free from any fixings.

The gutters offer the appearance of traditional half round systems butwith much greater capacities.
