Frogs are amphibians. They live part of their life in the water and part of their life on land. They are cold blooded and have moist, slimy skin. They go through different stages during their lifetime. The changes they go through from tiny eggs to frogs is called metamorphosis. Frogs lay up to 4,000 eggs at one time. The eggs have a jelly-like protective coating. The eggs hatch into tadpoles or pollywogs that swim. They have a tail and gills which they breathe through in the water. The tadpoles eat plants in the water. Soon, they grow hind legs and front legs. Their tails slowly disappear. They are frogs. The whole frog life cycle takes about 16 weeks. Although frogs live on land, they must live near swamps, ponds or damp places. They will die if their skin dries out. Some frogs hibernate during the winter. Frogs are carnivores and eat insects, worms and small animals. They catch their prey with their sticky tongues. Their bulging eyes give them very good eyesight.
