You may remember hearing about Albert. Aſter his grandmother, who adopted him, passed away, Albert spent much of his childhood bouncing between family members and going in and out of foster care. This lack of stability meant school wasn’t a priority; he got into trouble and was eventually arrested. These days, Albert is working full time in the Facilities Electrical Department at Samsung and going to college full time to get his Journeyman’s License, studying under a Master Electrician. How did he do it? It began with a referral to Goodwill to finish his education; however, he struggled in the GED program. With continuing family issues, he ended up living in a city park where he had an epiphany: He needed to change his life. He knew he wanted to become an Electrician, so he and his Career Case Manager, Rachel, developed an action plan for his future career. Working with Rachel, Albert never again wavered in his efforts to attain his GED. Once Albert earned his GED, he and Rachel started working on his job skills. For a while, he worked part- time at Goodwill and applied for classes at Austin Community College. Then his life took the turn he’d always wanted – he was offered an internship at Samsung in their Mechanical Maintenance Department. The leadership team at Samsung were impressed with Albert’s work ethic and hired him permanently! In May 2014, Albert ventured outside of Texas for the first time when he was selected to share his remarkable story and represent Goodwill at Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. He met with dozens of lawmakers and even shot a “selfie” with Senator John McCain. Three years later, Albert received the opportunity he was anxiously awaiting - an apprenticeship studying under a Master Electrician. The best part? Samsung is so committed to his success that they are funding his college education! Albert beams, “Goodwill gave me the tools and the chance I needed. It was up to me to advance myself into what I’ve become, and now I’m on the path for my dream career.” WHERE ARE THEY NOW? ALBERT’S ELECTRIFYING CAREER!

Then his life took the turn he’d always wanted – he was offered an internship at Samsung in their Mechanical Maintenance Department. President’s CornerIn 2017, More is Better!

Dear Central Texans, We had an amazing 2016, opening and relocating six new stores and providing a greater diversity of services than ever to our neighbors in the Central Texas area. We plan on an equally amazing 2017, with a new store opening in Leander, expansion

of our education initiatives, and pursuing more legislation reform to continue empowering the individuals we serve.

Over the years, we’ve been privileged to create life-changing opportunities by engaging with our state legislature. Our agenda this year will focus on criminal reform, particularly re-entry services, and lifting the enrollment cap of 150 students aged 19-50 so we may expand The Goodwill Excel Center adult high school into other cities across the state. In fact, our high school is now offering courses to 25 women in the Lockhart Women’s Correctional Facility!

The Goodwill Career and Technical Academy (GCTA)

is expanding as well. We now offer four new medical courses and hi-tech training including Computer Support Specialist and Linux Programming. In an effort to meet employer demands, we also provide CDL training at our Goodwill Resource Center in South Austin; commercial driving has proven to be an excellent career path for many of our program participants.

Your continued support ensures that 2017 will be another year full of growth and innovation! Thank you for joining me in empowering 100,000 Central Texans to transform their lives through work!

Funder’s CornerFunding for our Future: ChildrenWhen Goodwill Central Texas opened The Goodwill Excel Center adult high school, one of our first priorities was ensuring full-time childcare was available. Thus, The Exploration Center was created – a free, fully licensed, childcare facility housed inside the high school!

In addition to breaking the cycle of undereducation for our adult students, we embarked on a journey to break this cycle for their children. Because 97% of The Goodwill Excel Center students report living in poverty, their children are significantly less likely than their peers to enter kindergarten on grade level. We

expanded our early-childhood program to serve 125 children for 45 hours a week. The next logical

step became to implement a pre-K curriculum and hire more staff. But, we hit a funding barrier. Enter KLE Foundation and The United Way! Both generously provided additional funding to improve the quality of the program and enable us to transition from basic childcare to a true Pre-K Program. Our students have excitedly embraced the program; so much so, that we currently have a waiting list! In 2017, our goal is to raise over $60,000 to open another classroom and double capacity.

Thank you, KLE Foundation and United Way, for your investment in our next generation of leaders!

KLE FOUNDATION: $20,000 Investment

UNITED WAY: $15,000 Investment

Business CornerGoodwill? GoodCall! On Valentine’s Day, Goodwill Business Solutions opened a new outbound business-to-business call center, GoodCall, located at our main headquarters in Austin. GoodCall currently employs eight people with plans to expand to 20 employees by years’ end.

YPC Media, the Call Center’s first business partner and customer, has heavily invested in the infrastructure and necessary technology for a successful operation: phones, computers, and sales dialer software. They are also heavily invested in our mission of generating lifelong connections to work.

“Not only will this call center help us more firmly establish our business coast-to-coast, it will help Goodwill program participants who have had to overcome obstacles to achieve good paying jobs,” said Michael Pavone, CEO of YPC Media, Inc.

GoodCall employees make $13 - $14/hour, plus commission.

“Part of our job is to figure out what talent the business community is lacking, then develop the training and build the workforce to fill those gaps; creating greater opportunities for both employers and the people we serve. GoodCall is a great example of that,” said Robyn Householder, VP of Business Development at Goodwill.
