DEFINITIONS

SOCIAL INNOVATION

Social innovations are new ideas and measures capable to meet social challenges, and whichare utilised by social groupings affected.

KNOWLEDGE-BASEDSOCIAL INNOVATION

Knowledge-based social innovations derive from particular development or utilisation of specificknowledge on purpose, usually involving scienceas one of the sources to improve knowing.

Examples:

Social security, pension systems Shop stewards Neighbourhood associations to construct and apply solar panels ...

What is „Social Innovation“? ... and the role of knowledge in social innovation processes?

Examples:

Pension reforms „Company theatre“ Governance of regional develop- ment respond. to climate change ...

TRANS-DISCIPLINARY SCIENCE

The classic notion of science in the Industrial Society: „Science, Mode 1“ *)

Ideas, theories, methods, norms codified in departments („depart-mentality“) Powered and controlled mainly by scientific communities Organised and regulated by standards established within limitations of disciplines Discoveries preceed development and implementation (linear model of production and utilisation of knowledge )

Science in the knowledge based Information Society: „Science, Mode 2“ *)

Production of knowledge, problem driven research across disciplines Decreasing control of scientific communities concerning RTDI-processes Increasing relevance of stakeholders and users (Science-Society relations, PUS, ...) Practitioners and other professional experts become involved („open innovation“) (cyclic model of production and utilisation of knowledge ➾ knowledge circulation, requires and produces hybrid science)

HOW TO PARTNER, WHERE AND WHEN ?

International science & technology coordination on climate change.Opportunities available to connect with ongoing collaboration:

„INCO-NET Global Issues RTD Programmes Information System“

► INCO-NET: International Cooperation Programme in EU FP 7

► INCO-NET projects established 2008 (4 yr. duration) with ZSI-participation► WBC-INCO.NET (Western Balkan Countries) – http://www.wbc-inco.net► IncoNet EECA (Eastern Europe and Central Asia) – www.inco-eeca.net► SEA-EU-NET (South East Asia) – www.zsi.at/en/projekte/laufend/4517.html► EULARINET (Latin America) – www.zsi.at/en/projekte/laufend/4746.html

► Possibilities to connect► Major task in WBC-INCO.NET: „Analysis of National Policies and Programmes

Regarding Global Issues“ (Partner responsible: ZSI)

Objective: To establish a joint database/information system – including other INCO-NETs as well – on relevant national and international science policies and programmes tackling global issues e.g. climate change, poverty reduction,

biodiversity, water scarcity ... (i.e. in line with Millennium Development Goals).

WAYS TOWARD COLLABORATION

Specified activities and contributions welcome

► Make contact with project managers at ZSI► Ms. Elke Dall (Project Co-ordinator) [email protected], Mr. Miro Polzer [email protected]► Web-Sites www.wbc-inco.net, www.aso.zsi.at, www.zsi.at (access all projects)

► Dissemination & exchange of information: publication of events, projects ...

► Provision of access to foundations‘ profiles, documents, calls, news ...

► Connect with specific partners in the network (ministries, research organistions, funding agencies, national contact points ...)

► Offer and use your own programmes/instruments: Provide scholarships, fellowships, promote your programmes on research, education&training,

awards ...

► Development of joint projects with selected partners in the network(s), e.g. ► Research, education, training► Facilitation of mobility of students, researchers, civil society actors ...► Workshops► Conferences

► Other Information► Project GLOBAL will establish a Virtual Conference Centre (VCC)► http://www.zsi.at/en/projekte/laufend/4786.html

„SOCIAL INNOVATION 2015“ – I

Five major objectives to be accomplished by the year 2015:

Research

▷ Personal grants for mobility of groups of young researchers

▷ Fellowship grants for teams of established researchers & experts

▷ Relevant sectors of society and economy surveyed: Focus on the existence, conditions of development and implementation,

particularities, dissemination and impact of social innovations in business

enterprises, NGOs, public institutions (education!), governance, ...

Public awareness

Social innovation is no longer exotic, receives attention like innovations in science and technology (products, processes, etc.), being publicly accepted and promoted as integrated part of innovation systems.

Five major objectives to be accomplished by the year 2015:[ctd.]

Links and collaboration between existing projects and programmes

▷ INCO-NET Global Issues Information and Documentation System

▷ Visualisation tools for GIIDS in place, including mapping of social innovations world-wide

Study programme

▷ International university Joint MA- and PhD-curricula in operation

Offices of Social Innovation (OSI)

▷ Outreach to certain regions and countries in need for support concerning innovative social development processes
