The present structure at Oregon Inlet Coast Guard Station is an enlarged 'and altered version of a tu'rn-of-the,-century story and a half frame' .;- -: :_.r!;''';.

prototype station constructed by the U. S. Lifesaving Service along the Outer Banks 'of North Carolina. The residentially scaled structure is s'i.ded with wood shingles (typical of the area) and roofed with shakes. The shingle siding is presently painted white. An observation to\'/er~' -. bereft 'of its ori gi na 1 pyram; da 1 roof and ca twa 1 k r; ses on the east si.de.. A concret"e floored porch extends across thepsouth side and continues

Th.2 present Oregon Inlet Coast Guard Station ;s the continuation of the .oregon Inlet Lifehoat Statton, one of the first seven sites s~lected by the' Lifesaving Service on the. Outer 'Banks in 1874. The other stations \A/ere: Caffrey's Inlet, Chicamicomico, Jone.s l Hi.ll (renamed Currituck Beach), Kitty Ha\'/k Beach, Little Kinnakeet, and Nagls He.ad. By 1883, tVlenty-nine stations had been established. All but four of these stattons. \v.ere on the Outer Banks and several are still standing, hO\,lever~, IT'rOst of trteJTl were converted into boathouses \(!hen larger stations were built and have been tran( rre.d to other government .agenci es, sold by the government, or destroyed.

The ,. "et, Oregon Inlet, opened as a result of a 7 September 1846 hurricane. It \'1as flameL tor the first vess(~l passing through the inlet - the side-v/heeler "OREGON II

Since the. iniet opened in 1846, it has 'continued to move south\'Jard and by 1871 \'Jas within 500 feet of the Bodie Island Lighthouse. The origin~l sites of the Bodie Island Lighthouse, the Confederate Fort Oregon built in 1861 and the 1874 Oregon Inlc:t Ltfe~avi.ng 'Station have \'lashed a\lay and have become part of the inlet.

Oregon Inlet Station has never been a lighthouse in the traditional form.
