Warriors Broomball Through the Years.
Watching the growth and transformation of the
Warriors organization has been something I
have personally enjoyed watching and being a
part of. As one of the original group of four
friends in 2005 trying out a new sport we had
never heard of before, it is hard to believe how
much has changed since then. Everything
from equipment, to players, to strategies, and
countless other aspects have evolved since it
all began.
As with any team, the players that make up the team are
in a constant state of flux. One difference with the Warriors
organization is that it has constantly been growing as well.
Through word of mouth and friends bringing in friends, it has
increased from 4 players the first season to likely 4 teams
next season. While the number of players in the local league
has grown, the real growth is best shown in the traveling
tournament team.
While the tournament team is now ranked 10th in the
nation, it most certainly wasn’t an easy road to reach this
point. When the team began to do well in league, the
decision was made to put our team to the test in the Minne-
sota State D Tournament against much more organized and
committed teams. While I wish I could say it was a great
success from the start, it would be a lie. Our team got a bit
of an eye opener getting mercy ruled 6-0 in all of the games
we played. While it was frustrating, our team grew and
learned from our mistakes. With our new insight as to how
to be successful at a higher level, much better results were
seen. There has been many 3rd and 2nd place finishes in
both state and nationals levels, but the best came when the
team finally won the championship during the 2011 Minne-
sota State C Tournament.
The team has since continued to improve and have suc-
cess against some of the best teams in the country. Going
to tournaments while always wanting to compete to the best
of our capabilities, but also adapting to what strategies are
needed to win at varying skill levels. What worked in the
Fargo league we quickly learned did not always lead to
success against the teams we faced during tournaments.
However, through trial and error we figured out our teams
strengths and how best to utilize them against some of the

Why would you spon-sor, donate, or pro-mote the sport of broomball or Fargo Warriors, Inc.?
One would donate to continue the
growth of a great game, one which
many different types of individuals
can enjoy. Broomball supports both
genders, and will hopefully expand
into the younger age bracket. By
becoming a sponsor, you are pio-
neering a sport into a realm it has
never been. You will help be respon-
sible for what broomball will become.
You would allow individuals to partici-
pate in an activity in which they will
engage in for the rest of their lives.
You will also get recognized by mem-
bers of the community, Fargo Warri-
ors, Inc. and on the Warriors website.
Other than tax-deduction, the Warri-
ors also provide incentives for certain
level sponsors, though, non-profit
status must be kept in mind.

The Warriors organization is cur-
rently in negotiations with Fargo
Parks to assume control and au-
thority of Fargo broomball. Having
operated an increasingly successful
summer development program, the
organization will be looking to the
future at acquiring and further de-
veloping the broomball program in
the Fargo/Moorhead area. The
hope is to incorporate a high school
league where the local high schools
will compete in a city league. Even-
tually the desire is to spread the
sport throughout the great state of
North Dakota. As always, we are in
dire need of sponsors and backers
for our ambitious plans!
top ranked teams in the country. We
have had players switching positions
and trying to find ways to utilize what
they do best.
While everyone has done their part
to grow the organization, it has really
been built and raised by
one man. Justus Foss has
been the captain and
leader since the begin-
ning. Whether it was
organizing hotels and
lines for tournaments,
finding ways to raise the
funds, and record film to learn from
our mistakes he has had a hand in
every aspect of the team’s growth. I
don’t think anyone, including
me, could have guessed that
our team would come as far
as it has. However, he knew
we had the ability and talent
to move up to
the next level
and has put in
the time and effort to
make sure it grew into
what it is today.
Going from an unknown
team from North Dakota
that nobody in the broomball commu-
nity knew anything about; to a team
that has earned its place amongst the
top teams in the country
has been an amazing
ride. However, while we
have accomplished
many things that we set
out to do there is still
work to be done. Even
though it is always good
to look back and really take in the
accomplishments we have already
achieved, it is just as important to look
ahead and know we will continue to
improve and compete to the best of
our ability.

Mike Veit is a new and upcoming
player within the organization.
Though he’s only just begun in the
sport of broomball, he shows
poise and great ability in net post-
ing his first career shutout in a 3-0
victory over #6 Billy’s at the TC
Open in only his 4th career start.
His only career stats are from the
2013 TC Open.
Q: What lead you to play broomball?
A: A buddy of mine, #4 Mike Gillund. I
moved back to Fargo and he invited me
to come to the WDL summer league
thinking I would like it.
Q: Best part about broomball?
A: The fact that it’s different from other
sports. Playing on ice with shoes adds
a unique challenge, then add to that the
team aspect and the difficulty of trying
to stick handle/shoot a ball and there
are plenty of challenges. What makes it
hard is what makes it fun I guess!
Q: What is your favorite broomball
moment so far?
A: So far I’ve only played a handful of
games but anytime you find success is
usually the most fun part of sports. The
other night in a WDL match we had a
line that consistently controlled the ball
and ended up scoring several times. I
got two goals and we won 6-1. So far
that was the best!
Q: Something most people don’t know
about you?
A: I am an avid hockey fan. I love
watching the NHL and my favorite team
is the Minnesota Wild. Hockey kind of
parallels broomball in some ways so
that’s likely the reason why I enjoy it.
Q: Pre-game ritual?
A: Show up late and rush through get-
ting dressed. Then scramble onto the
ice, this way you don’t have much time
to think things over.
Q: Advice for new players?
A: As with any sport, work hard and
have fun. If you want to get better, look
towards the experienced guys. They’ve
usually been through most situations so
ask questions.
Q: Future aspirations with broomball?
A: I would like to improve enough to
start being an asset in competitive
tournaments.
Q: Best part about Fargo Warriors,
Inc.?
A: So far the Warriors have been noth-
ing but helpful for all the new players.
Just having a league like this (WDL)
where new players can mix it up with
better players while still getting experi-
ence with their own skill level is impor-
tant.
Q: Preferred goal celebration?
A: Keep it simple with just an excited
fist pump after raising the hands.
