ELECTRONICS AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS

Part of the ETIC (Electronic, Information and Communication Technology) industry potential to offer highly qualified solutions to the problems of its own sector and other economic activity areas is based on its capacity to design and manufacture products.

Starting from what can be described as the “raw material”, the electronic components, the Spanish industry is able to design and manufacture high-tech products and systems for electronics and telecommunications.

The intense R&D activity that this industry develops – 40% of private investment comes from the ETIC sector – positions the technology of the Spanish components and equipment industry among the top technologies worldwide.

Consequently, in Spain there are R&D centers not only at national capital companies but also at large multinational corporations that find in this country the necessary basis to develop their industrial and R&D programs.

Renowned international companies have Centers of Excellence specialized in the manufacturing of products in a variety of fields, like Digital TV, computer terminals (printers), optical fiber and broadband networks equipment and systems, air traffic control, and civilian and military simulation systems.

The technology capacity of the Spanish industry allows for active participation in European programs in fields such as military electronics, especially weapon, war jets and military ships equipment systems.

Furthermore, terminals and equipment for low-density population areas, and broadband solutions and services, are part of the advanced products package of the Spanish telecommunication industry.

Moreover, all of this expertise is also shown in the development of hospital management, medical equipment development and neonatal control, areas in which Spain is an international example.

ARTEIXO TELECOMTel.: (+34) 902 203 [email protected] Empresarial Penapurreira, parcelas B1-B2 15320 As Pontes A Coruña

“ With extensive expertise in the rail sector, Arteixo will go down in history as the creator of the Dual Earth Dual System GSM-R Train System and of the Router Re-Visio Router”

• BEN GPS Locator, with a wide range of uses, from locating people with cognitive disabilities to watching sports events live.

An engine for new technologies

Founded and based in the land of witches and Celtic traditions, Arteixo Telecom has become a part of the legend surrounding electronics and international telecommunications. Founded in 1972 as an Ericsson productivity center in A Coruña (Galicia), it was re-founded nearly a quarter of a century later as a company dedicated to the development of innovative solutions in electronics and ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) .

With extensive expertise in the rail sector, Arteixo will go down in history as the creator of the Earth Dual System GSM-R Train and Router Re-Visio.

The Earth Dual System GSM-R is a solution that integrates all existing communication systems on the train (analog and digital technology) and enables conductors to be in permanent contact with the central control, regardless of the type of rails. In addition, this innovative system allows trains to go on international routes between countries that use the European standard (GSM-R) without the need to change equipment every time they have a new communication network.

The second technology, the Re-Visio, was developed in collaboration with Level Telecom and is the first router capable of providing reliable broadband Internet access to passengers of public transportation such as buses, trams, subways or trains. Re-Visio uses a combined technology 3G/HSPA, which is the most advanced mobile Internet standard with a capacity of up to 7.2Mbit per second.

One of the most relevant projects related to this technology in the international market is the implementation of the Re-Visio in subways in Mexico and Colombia.

Aiteixo Telecom focuses its activities on three main lines: third party industrial support, the development and industrialization of its own products, and the deployment of telecommunication infrastructure. It is the only communication systems provider within the railroad sector, and its product, known as Tren Tierra, is used by Renfe and Adif. In addition, Aiteixo is currently providing other communication equipment for train operators such as ETS/Euskotren and Ferrocarriles de la Generalitat Valenciana (FGV), and it also ships material overseas to manufacturers like CAF, Alstom, Talgo, Siemens, Bombardier and Vossloh.

The Arteixo Telecom technology also covers all types of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) related activities, from the manufacture and repair of electronic equipment to technology associated with renewable energies. Out of all the technology products developed at Arteixo, one of the most outstanding is the GPS BEN locator that allows for a wide range of uses, from locating people with cognitive disabilities to watching equestrian events live from outside the racecourse. In fact, the former is already implemented in several Spanish regions and the latter has been tested successfully in France and Malaysia.

The company has recently started the production of another innovative product: a PLC Modem that offers bandwidth of up to 1 Gbps. This is the first PLC modem developed and manufactured in Spain to achieve this bandwidth and it will enable the company to strengthen its position as the provider of the major telecom operators and enter fully into the mass consumer market.

With an income of up to €20.1 million in 2008, the Galician company is present in United Kingdom, Colombia, Mexico, the Caribbean Islands and Angola. It has 216 employees on staff and prides itself on its employee care as well as its commitment to environmental, economic and social development. Arteixo is truly a paradigm of innovation and sustainable development.

BLUSENS GLOBAL CORPORATIONTel.: (+34) 98 155 32 [email protected]. Fernando Casas Novoa, 37 - B, 2º 15707 Santiago de Compostela

The David of electronics

Blusens owes its success to an economist, José Ramón García, a physicist, Miguel Silva, and these basic tenets: permanent innovation, business flexibility, high quality product lines and optimum rotation, creative marketing and superb after sales service. This has proven to be the best strategy to create a consumer electronics giant that started from scratch with barely €3,000 in a small office in the old quarter of Santiago de Compostela in Spain.

Blusens has experienced continuous growth since it launched its first DVD players in 2002. Attracted by the potential for this product, García y Silva managed to convince three banks to loan them one million euros with a business plan written on one single sheet of paper. Eight years later, that sheet of paper is worth over 100 million, the equivalent to the turnover Blusens plans on exceeding in 2010. Blusens’ track record and business management have been acknowledged by receiving some of the most important awards. José Ramón García received the Businessman of the Year award for 2007 given by the AJE (Young Businessmen Association) and in 2008 he was received the Empresario Emergente (Emerging Businessman) prize by Ernst&Young. Miguel Silva has won the Cruz de Oficial de la Orden del Mérito Civil by His Majesty the King of Spain. Silva was awarded the cross for his leadership of several initiatives related to internationalization and foreign trade, amongst them the co-creation of the United Arab Emirates Chamber of Commerce.

Blusens’ catalogue includes more than forty products that can be found on the shelves of the most important consumer electronics chains of the world, including a high capacity Wi-Fi MP3 player, LCD screens, TDT receivers, multimedia home entertainment centers and products under its Connected Home concept.

Blusens has two assembly lines in Shen Zeng (China), and within 30 hours these products can be at any store in the world. The secret of the company resides in the motto “let others do what they do best”, so Blusens can focus on the tasks that add value to the company: design and branding, which are performed from their headquarters.

A team of 120 work in Spain in the company’s design, innovation, marketing and commercialization departments. Blusens invests more than 10% of its annual turnover in R&D and innovation as it gives rise to new products such as Blubrain, a multimedia center that allows the user to enjoy content (video, music, TV) anywhere in the house. It also launched the G01, the first PND GPS capable of showing the route over Pictometry, real images coming from aerial photography. The company also spends a significant portion of its profits on creative marketing activities such as sponsoring the basketball team of the Spanish Basketball League Xacobeo Blusens and the motorcycle team BQR Blusens.

“ Blusens applies the Zara recipe to mass consumption electronics. It has two assembly lines in Shen Zeng (China), and within 30 hours these products can be at any store in the world”

Technological innovations:

• G12. The first MP3 and DivX portable player with Bluetooth.

• G14. The first MP3 and DivX player with Bluetooth and WiFi that is linked to the blu:generation users community.

• G01. The first Pictometry™ navigator to use real satellite images.

Internationalization is at the core of its strategy. Blusens produces in China, innovates in Spain and sells in five continents. From its branches in Dubai, Hong-Kong and Kuala Lumpur it commercially covers 50 countries. In the Americas, the company has branches in Uruguay, Mexico and Canada and has logistic offices in Miami. Right now their products can be found in over 6,000 stores in Spain.

Blusens has an unexpected strong international spirit for a young company and has successfully globalized its growth in a short period of time giving it a strong competitive advantage to expand in the market.

The Spanish brain for transportation and security in Mexico

The history of the Ikusi group is the history of the modernization and the opening up of the Spanish industry. Founded in 1949 when television signals first came to Spain, in just over half a century the company has gone from being a pioneer in the introduction of imported technology to being a competitor in the world Champions League for innovation in integrated solutions for electronics and telecommunications.

Imbued with the will and open mind of its founder, Ángel Iglesias, Ikusi began in the 60s as a venture into R&D that has carried it to the international forefront as a global provider of solutions, embedded systems and key projects in airports, transport, traffic and tunnels, security, hospitality, digital media, telecontrol and television signal reception and distribution.

Awarded in 2005 with the Prince Felipe Award for Business Excellence, today Ikusi has clients in 80 countries and subsidiaries in Portugal, France, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Russia, Chile, United Arab Emirates, Colombia and Mexico. Mexico in particular is the scene of some of the company’s most emblematic contracts, for instance, the one signed with Alstom to develop a subsystems integration project for fixed installations in line 12 of the Mexico City Subway. They also were in charge of the project in the Monterrey underground to implement departure monitors that receive their content from the ground using Wi-Fi technology.

Ikusi also won contracts for the installation of sharing systems in the Toluca airport and low voltage systems in Monterrey airport, in addition to access control systems for the National Bank of Mexico and video surveillance, IP telephony and unified communications systems for the oil company PEMEX.

Outside of Mexico, projects include traffic management systems in the Carminha tunnel (Portugal); the installation of the France24 channel in high-end hotels in France, Portugal and Spain; and the design and provision of a system for receiving and retransmitting television signals for Woodside Petroleum marine oil platforms in Australia.

Foreign business already accounts for around 40% of the turnover of a company that has made constant innovation the engine behind its growth. This philosophy has led to global technological developments like the Transmodulador MTI900 for TV signal reception via satellite; the first Digital-to-Analogue Transmodulator with embedded conditional access, and the first digital PA System based on IP protocols.

A group leader in advanced technology, Ikusi maintains a culture of mutual trust with customers, employees, shareholders and suppliers as the centerpiece of its business plan.

Innovations:

• The first Spanish amplifier for CATV networks and the first Spanish headends for CATV networks.

• First Spanish remote radio control system for industrial applications.

• First converter with digital frequency synthesis. Developed a character and graphics generator for public information systems at airports.

• First Digital-to-Analog Transmodulator with conditional access procedure. World novelty. First e-voting system based on the traditional ballot. World novelty.

• First transmodulator of terrestrial digital television satellite. World novelty.

• System for managing airport security.

“ Ikusi began in the 60s as a venture into R&D that has carried it to the international forefront as a global provider of solutions, embedded systems and key projects in airports, transport, traffic and tunnels, security, hospitality, digital media, telecontrol and television signal reception and distribution”

Communication technology with a global reach

Teldat Group is headquartered in Madrid and has opened offices throughout its main markets: the Iberian Peninsula, Latin America (Mexico) and the United States (Miami). In addition, this group has a network of over 35 trading partners that enables it to operate in the rest of the international markets. The group itself, however, consists of five companies: Teldat S.A., Fibernet, Pahldata, Prodys and Integra-T.

Teldat S.A. is one of the few European manufacturers with its own technology and experience in complex IP contexts. With more than 25 years of experience in the sector, this firm is supported by the trust of if clients, among which are the most important multinational operators such as Telefónica, British Telecom, Telmex, Portugal Telecom and Vodafone.

Large corporations also rely on Teldat’s technology. Some of these corporations are banks such as the Santander Group and the BBVA Group, chain stores such as Zara, travel agencies such as Amadeus, and public organizations from around the world.

The products developed by this group of Spanish enterprises are fire proof. Thanks to that, in 2007, the Teldat Group signed a contract with Fire-Lite, a subsidiary of the American fire giant Honeywell, to provide them with 3,000 MIP (module using IP technology) devices, based on fire alarm transmissions via the Internet or corporate networks. As a prerequisite, the devices had to pass long and complex certification processes from the UL laboratories.

Teldat S.A.’s main line of product are the access routers for companies. From flat routers that offer fixed combinations of interfaces Ethernet LAN and WAN, Wi-Fi, xDSL and 3G interfaces, to modular devices for companies that support combinations of over twenty types of interfaces. Its solutions can be applied in sectors as diverse as the automobile, energy, and ATM and office communications industries.

Fibernet was founded in 1998 and is one of the companies in the Teldat Group. This enterprise manufactures both CWDM (coarse wavelength division multiplexing) and DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplexing) devices. Its success is a result of its continuous commitment to R&D, which has positioned the company as the leader in fiber optic communication technologies. Currently, the solutions that the company offers in the market allow for the multiplication of the fiber’s capacity to 240 channels of 10 Gbps each, and the company has already obtained the first results on the new 40 & 100 Gpbs interfaces. In addition, Fibernet has its own engineering and professional services departments with 24/7 customer service.

Fibernet is aimed at two specific markets: operators’ equipment and the corporate market. It has obtained significant achievements at both the national and international level with more than 15,000 optical channels in production through its CWDM and DWDM systems. Regarding the national market achievements, banks, public administrations, operators and clients with the most important data centers in the country such as Banco de España, La Caixa, Grupo Santander, BBVA and Agencia Tributaria; regional governments like the Regional Council of Extremadura and Murcia Community; national administrations such as the Spanish Presidency; and operators like Telefónica, BT and Jazztel have trusted their optical communications to Fibernet’s technology. Moreover, Fibernet has carried

out relevant international projects for financial entities, such as the fusion and migration of the optical communication infrastructures for two banks in Latin America in collaboration with the Spanish bank BBVA, and data consolidation between long distance centers in Europe with the collaboration of the Santander Group.

Security networks, data encoding, remote management, cellular interfaces and copper-based DSL technology are this group’s specialized areas. Through these products, Teldat Group has demonstrated that the Spanish technology triumphs in the world.

“ The company has over 268 million clients all over the world and presence in 25 countries backed by its 85 years of history”

• Telefónica has one of the most internationalized profiles of the sector since 60% of its revenue comes from foreign markets. It has a consolidated position as a leading operator due to its differentiated profile in terms of diversification and scale, financial strength, growth capacity and stockholder returns.

• One of its pillars of expansion is innovation in all its dimensions and an open work culture. This quality has enabled Telefónica to create one of the largest innovation networks of the ICT sector.

A telecommunications giant

It has 85 years of history; over €4.500 million in capital stock, a presence in 25 countries, 2681 million clients all over the world (47 million in Spain, 164 million in Latin America and an additional 50 million in the rest of Europe), a yearly expenditure of around €8 billion in new investments worldwide and 260,000 professionals working for the company. These numbers are indicative of a true leader, a world class telecommunications giant with Spanish origins.

Today Telefónica is one of the largest telecommunications companies in the world. Its capitalization, its business volume, its investments in R&D and its international presence can all attest to it. But, most importantly, Telefónica is a leading company due to its combination of experience and the mentality of constant change. It has remained on the cutting edge despite the evolution of technology and society in a sector known for globalization and competitiveness.

Telefónica’s activities are centered on fixed and mobile telecommunication and broadband is a key tool for the developing both. Today it is a private company with over 1.5 million stockholders and it trades in the Spanish stock markets as well as in London, Tokyo, New York, Lima, Buenos Aires and São Paulo. In the telecommunications sector, the group is third in the world by market capitalization; is also the first European integrated operator; and holds the third place in the Eurostoxx 50, which encompasses the largest companies in the euro area.

Telefónica has one of the most internationalized profiles of the sector since 60% of its revenue comes from foreign markets. It also has a consolidated position as a leading operator thanks to its financial strength and differentiated profile in terms of scale and diversification (both geographically and in business); its capability to capture growth with the highest levels of efficiency and competitiveness in the industry and its superior stockholder return policy.

Telefónica is the leading telecommunications provider in Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Peru and has a significant presence in the markets of Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Uruguay and Venezuela. In Europe, the acquisition of O2 at the end of 2005 made Telefónica one of the leading companies of the continent, with a presence in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. China and Italy also highlight Telefonica´s international profile, countries with which Telefónica has an important relationship through strategic and industrial alliances with China Unicom and Telecom Italia.

This territorial, technological and business process expansion is based on a fundamental strategic principle: innovation. Multidimensional R&D and an open work culture which promotes cooperative models have enabled the creation of one of the largest innovation networks in the ICT sector and have kept the company at the highest level even in times of crisis.

1. Data from customers at the end of September 2009.

The formula is explained by a high level executive of the company when he states, “The challenges we face to transform crisis into opportunity are evident: adapt and create emotional bonds with our clients, while maintaining high efficiency levels and being creative and innovative, offering quality and value and achieving a sustainable business.”

WAVECONTROLTel.: (+34) 93 320 80 [email protected]. wavecontrol.com C/ Pallars 65-7108018 Barcelona

The electromagnetic radiation security guard

Only 12 years in the market have been enough for Wavecontrol to become a global leader in measurement solutions and electromagnetic fields control.

Wavecontrol was originally the dream of three entrepreneurs, and it has already gone beyond the frontiers of France, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Eastern Europe, Turkey, Argentina, Peru, Malaysia and North Africa.

Born to generate magnetic compatibility solutions for electronics companies, Wavecontrol expanded its spectrum of activities up to the development of radio frequency equipment. The company identified business opportunities arising from the European community directives regarding electromagnetic fields regulations.

With its deep expertise, the R&D department of this Catalan SME developed a monitoring system to measure electromagnetic fields. This was a solution that met the urgent need to control and measure electromagnetic fields before the enormous proliferation of telecommunication networks such as GSM, UMTS, DCS, Bluetooth, WiFi, WiMax, etc.

The Wavecontrol system was first implemented successfully in Cataluña, and from there, it was extended to the rest of Spain. The excellent acceptance of the state administration opened new horizons to international markets.

Wavecontrol is a system of radio frequency measurement which allows the government to solve the conflict between citizens who are concerned about the health effects of non-ionizing radiation, and telecommunication operators who are being put under pressure by governments as well as consumers to improve the quality of the service.

Nowadays, Wavecontrol has a win-win solution, being the only company in Spain, and one of the few in the world, that is able to offer these products and simultaneously keep all clients satisfied. With Wavecontrol citizens can avoid risks, administrations can respond to citizen demands as expected, and operators face fewer difficulties to set up telecommunication infrastructures. This service from Wavecontrol is holistic and effective.

“ Born to generate magnetic compatibility solutions for electronic companies, Wavecontrol expanded its spectrum of activities to include the development of radio frequency equipment. The company identified business opportunities arising from the State policies regarding specifically the electromagnetic fields”

Technological innovations:

• The Wavecontrol system for measuring radio frequency is used by the Government to give answers to citizens who are concerned about the health effects of non-ionizing radiation, and in another case to telecommunication operators who are being put under pressure by governments.

Page 11: – electronics and telecommunications

These are leading companies at the forefront of technology. They develop their activities and projects in five continents. They have succeeded in the hardest markets. They have stood out in the most complex international bidding processes. And all these companies have one thing in common: they speak Spanish.

They are the authentic ambassadors of España, technology for life, the program developed by the Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior (ICEX) that has become the true flagship of the new Spain. Spain is a renewed country that has consolidated its position in the Top Ten world economies and is immersed in a transformation process to improve its business network and export potential.

There are large multinationals that have positioned themselves among global leaders in the service, energy and infrastructure sectors. There are also small and medium enterprises that have made research, development and internationalization their hallmark and their competitive strategy in order to work with and compete against the best companies in the largest and most demanding markets of the world.

These companies without limits have earned their position in the Champions League of telephony, digital radio and TV, sustainable energy, outsourcing, software and computing services, telecommunications, electronic components and industrial electronics among others. These are emblematic companies belonging to the 21st Century Made in Spain trend. This book presents a small but representative selection of firms that draws a clear image of the industry and technology of a country and of entrepreneurs who, far beyond crises, have ventured into research and investment, with an extraordinary commitment to development, progress and the future.
