ZEYANA YUSSUF WINS PLACE TO STUDY ENGLISH AT
CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY
Top Universities are now getting ready to welcome
students from Eastbury including Cambridge, Kings
College, University College London, Queen Mary’s,
Bristol, Warwick, Birmingham, SOAS, Manchester
and Bath to study a range of exciting subjects. We
are also pleased that an increasing number of
students will be progressing to higher level Modern
Apprenticeships. All of the students I spoke to
unanimously would like to thank their teachers for
their support and hard work during their time at
school. Many commented on the fact that they
now realise that hard work and perseverance pays
off.
Everybody at Eastbury (Staff, Governors and
students) congratulates Zeyana Yussufon winning a
place to study English at one of the top universities
in the world – Cambridge. We wish her every
success.
ANOTHER GREAT YEAR FOR GCSE RESULTS
WITH A RECORD NUMBER OF THE TOP A*/A
GRADES
Eastbury has built on its success in recent
years with 61% of students achieving A*-C
grades in GCSE English and Mathematics,
and a staggering number of 116 students
achieving a top grade A*/A in their favourite
subject, with more than 1 in 10 of students
achieving 5+A*/A grades. Nearly 1 in 2
students achieved at least 1 top A*/A grade.
The GCSE results and progress data clearly
demonstrates that students of all abilities
have worked hard and made excellent
progress.
In recent years exams have become more
rigorous and there have been changes to
the way students are assessed (more end of
course exams, less coursework and no early
entry). Eastbury is pleased that it continues
to build on the huge improvements in results
in recent years with a year group that has
faced many personal challenges.
Strong performing departments include
Biology (41% A*/A &92% A*-C); ,Chemistry
(32% A*/A & 93% A*-C); Physics (47% A*/A &
88% A*-C); Computing Science (39% A*/A & 84% A*
-C); English Literature (20% A*/A & 68% A*-C);
Mathematics (21% A*/A & 68% A*-C); French (17%
A*/A & 57% A*-C); Statistics (36% A*/A & 87% A*-C);
Drama (15% A*/A 87% A*-C); Eastbury is proud that
the vast majority of students also studying
vocational courses such as Hospitality and
Catering, and Physical Education; achieved grades
A*-C with many getting the top A*/A grade.
Eastbury is extremely proud of the achievements of
all students. It is very difficult to get the top grades,
the school is therefore especially pleased with the 3
top students, Hamaad Aslam, Rebecca Nam and
Karina Prokofjeva who achieved a highly impressive
10 A*/A and the 18 students who gained 8 or more
top grades A*/A (Raisha Amin; Junaid Butt; Cathy

some of the best schools and academies in London.
We must all remember that exam results are not just
statistics; they are the result of hard work and are
the passport to many jobs. I am absolutely delighted
for all those who have worked hard to secure the
grades needed for their chosen University, Modern
Apprenticeship or job. All, whatever their pathway,
have made an excellent start to their careers. We
are all constantly trying to improve results to improve
the life chances of our students and help them onto
their next step in their careers. I would like to thank
all the staff for their hard work, professionalism and
the many hours they have put in to ensure these
amazing results. I would also like to thank our caring
families, Governors and Local Authority who have
provided support and encouragement. It is a
privilege to work with such a dedicated staff team
and enthusiastic students.

Eastbury Community School Reaching for the
Stars
Sixteen year 10 and 11 students from Eastbury
Community School visited the Royal Astronomical
Society to witness the release of the first data set
from the £1billion, international Gaia project. The
BBC filmed the visit, and students using the project’s
specially designed software to carry out their own
analysis of the galaxy measurements. This will be
broadcast during various news and other
programmes over the coming weeks. This is a
momentous occasion for Eastbury as the first school
in the UK to take on such a role in international
research and act as a hub school for the Institute for
Research in Schools. Eastbury students will be the
only individuals outside of the European Space
Agency and affiliated university professors to
receive live data from this galaxy-mapping project
and they will get the chance to discover
supernovae that have never been detected before!
We are all very excited at Eastbury, and proud of
Megan Greet, all the students involved and our
Science department for becoming involved in this
prestigious project.
The Dream Continues
Eastbury Community teachers Anita Ark and Jolaine
Brockett had the pleasure of working with the BBC
team on Sunday 11 September as Eastbury took
charge of the BBC Shakespeare Twitter feed during
a live steam of A Midsummer Night’s Dream from
The Globe. Eastbury kept the audience up to date
with the developing plot points through the live
feed, helping the audience to keep up with all the
unfolding action. Much fun was had by all as
Eastbury taught the play to the nation!
LOST
PROPERTY The lost property trolley is
out every Friday outside
the Reception office for
students to check if they
have lost any thing.

This week, sixteen of our year 10 and year 11
students featured on National BBC TV and radio
news to demonstrate that teenagers really can carry
out genuine scientific research. We have been
selected as the first school in the world to work in
partnership with the European Space Agency and
the Institute for Research in Schools to analyse data
from their £1billion Gaia project, which aims to map
out more of the Milky Way galaxy than ever has
been previously. Our role as the England school hub
for this project is a reflection of the esteem in which
we are held amongst universities and research
bodies, as a result of the outstanding results our
students are achieving in science GCSEs and A
levels and our continued work to enrich their study
through extra-curricular programmes. Miss Greet
(Head of Physics) and Mr Paton (Physics teacher)
were delighted to accompany the students to the
Royal Astronomical society on Wednesday 14th
September for the first data release; as usual, all of
them represented the school fantastically!
We now look forward to our students searching for
more supernovae and getting involved in our other
science enrichment programmes. These will include:
Investigating Magnetospheric waves with QMUL,
imaging materials using a scanning electron
microscope, protein analysis using an atomic forces
microscope, entering the UK rocketry championships
and much more! Ask your son/daughter what they
plan to take part in!
