The DYW Concept• In 2013 The Scottish Government established an

independent commission led by Sir Ian Wood to explore how to develop a system for vocational training and mirror labour markets of the best performing European Countries. At that time Scotland was 3rd bottom of 20 EU Countries. Today we are 4th from the top!

• In 2014, an implementation plan was published entitled, “Developing the Young Workforce – Scotland’s Youth Employment Strategy”. This in effect is a seven-year national programme with the aim of reducing youth unemployment by 40% by 2021. Current rate for Scotland is 8.0%.

DYW Regional Industry Group – Main Objectives

• 21 DYW Regional Industry Hubs have been established across Scotland to link industry with schools to increase positive destination outcomes.

• DYW facilitates achieving regional outcome agreement targets across Local Authority areas.

• Engage with internal and external stakeholders across Scotland e.g. Employers, Industry Bodies, Local Authorities, Colleges, SDS, Scottish Government, Chambers of Commerce, Business Hubs, Sector Innovation Centres, Education Scotland, SQA.

• Reduce reliance on Government funding post 2021.

DYW Group Structure

• National DYW Board.

• DYW Regional Board in each of the 21 regions: consists of up to 20 representatives primarily from industry but includes Local Authority, Scottish Government and Skills Development Scotland.

• DYW Regional Executive Team : Programme Manager, Programme Executives, support staff ieAdmin.

DYW Local Authority/School Structure

• DYW Local Authority Lead (seconded teacher).

• DYW School Leads* (teachers who co-ordinate DYW activity within schools).

*Varies by school and Local Authority area.

Examples of Engagement Activities• Engage schools to raise awareness from S1-S6

of NHS job roles i.e. site visits (paramedics / logistics), sector talks, flexible work experience.

• Provide Teacher/Careers Advisor insight talks / industry tours.

• Employer Events: show case careers to pupils/parents.

• Place offers on Marketplace with support from DYW regional groups.

MarketplaceWhat is Marketplace?‘Marketplace’ is a digital platform to improve engagement between employers and education.

Why do we need Marketplace?• The Scottish Government’s Commission for Developing the Young Workforce

recommended more meaningful partnerships and stronger engagement between education and employers.

Aims of Marketplace• Improving access to employers and a range of opportunities that they offer to educators

and students;• Delivering an employer led approach to business engaging with education;• Providing reports to education outlining the breadth of employers engaged with their

school, the variety of opportunities available and the take up rate and conversion. This can be fed into future inspection and improvement reports.
