Dr. Paul V. Minotty, founder of New Vision Eye Center, known for offering patients the latest technological advances in eye care, is excelling once again. Dr. Minotty and Dr. Stephen M. Tate are pleased to announce the fi nal piece of the Cataract Refractive Suite puzzle will be the addition of the VERION Image Guided system.

The VERION Image Guided System tracks your eye from the beginning to the end of your cataract surgery, adding more accuracy and precision throughout the process. During the planning stage the process. During the planning stage for cataract surgery, the VERION sys-tem takes a high-resolution image of a patient’s eye. It then maps out each eye’s unique iris and scleral details, as well as the pupil size and centration. This ‘fi nger-print of the eye’, helps the surgeon cre-ate an optimized surgical plan that guides him through the procedure on the day of surgery. This ensures accurate centering and positioning of the intraocular lens and laser incisions during surgery. The VERION features software that assists the surgeon with astigmatism correction and eliminates the need to manually mark the eye.

Dr. Minotty stated, “Cataract surgery has come a long way. From the use of hand-held blades to the advancement of bladeless laser technology and now, more recently, to advancements in operating

machines and software. These advances in cataract surgery offer safer, more accurate and better predictable vision outcomes. By adding the VERION, patients will have the most advanced, fully comput-er-guided technology possible for their cataract surgery.”

Volunteering is one of my favorite ways to help others, expand social contact and keeps me active. Technology is wonderful but it has a way of reducing face-to-face encounters. I had the opportunity to ride with a volunteer from Meals on Wheels in March which was a spring-board for a new adventure for me this summer. After all, summer is often a time of vacations and new activities. I am looking forward to delivering hot nourishing meals to seniors who are homebound and in need of a freshly prepared meal and a break from social isolation. The Senior Re-source Association made the application and orientation process easy. I also had a background check done which was a require-ment to make sure homebound seniors are also protected. That also got me thinking; many professions such as teachers and healthcare providers require a background check and during the summer individuals in those fi elds are off or have reduce hours. It’s a win-win for volunteers and for the Senior Resource Asso-ciation because the volunteer application process is quicker. As a ‘Meals on Wheels’ volunteer I was able to pick the hours and day I could commit to and not over-extend myself. I am starting out with twice a month on Fridays for the summer and this will fi ll a void during the summer when there are less volunteers available. Pages 12 & 13 in this issue of the Heartbeat has a story about the Senior Resource Association’s ‘Meals on Wheels’ program.

As COO, Kelly managed multiple hos-pital departments and oversaw the design, construction and staffi ng of the cardiac catheterization lab. She drew from ex-perience in a previous position as area vice-president of a wound care company, during which she worked on multiple new wound center construction projects.

Born and raised in Brevard County, Kelly says her family originally came to the area because of employment with NASA and that a career in healthcare is something that several family members also share. She graduated from the University of Central Florida in 2000 with a BS in Health and Public Affairs, later continuing her academic career at Nova Southeastern University where she earned a Master of Science degree. Kelly brings more than 10 years of healthcare and management experience to her new position.

Kelly considers herself a multi-tasker and it’s apparent because she successfully juggles her professional and personal life seamlessly. She’s happily married to husband Mike, an engineer at Harris in Melbourne, and has a son, Tristen, a sophomore at Florida State University, and a 21-month-old daughter, Madison, who keeps her on her toes.

Promoted to Chief Executive Offi cer in April of this year, Kelly is well positioned to lead the hospital through its next growth phase. “My goal is to confi dently

navigate our hospital through the current challenges facing healthcare providers, but to consistently keep the focus on what is most important – our patients,” stated Kelly.

As Sebastian River Medical Center celebrates its 40th year of serving the community, the hospital continues to add services, meeting the community’s needs. This provides lifesaving procedures right in the Sebastian area and Kelly will focus on building on that success so patients won’t have to travel for necessary medi-cal care.

“We’ve had a huge growth phase over the last three years. We’ve done well in physician recruitment, and surgical volume has increased by 20 percent. We always want to make sure we understand the needs of the community and continue to bring highly trained and qualifi ed people to provide the best patient care possible.”

Kelly’s style in dealing with staff, physi-cians and patients is making herself highly visible within the hospital. This allows her to communicate goals and expectations and gain feedback directly. She makes a point of getting to know the associates so they feel comfortable coming to her with any issues or ideas they may have.“I like that my employees feel that they can tell me what’s on their mind. They know that they can trust me and that I will always make time for them.”

Kelly Enriquez has been with Sebastian River Medical Center since 2008, serving initially as Director of Physician Outreach, building relationships with the physicians and other hospital staff and becoming familiar with how well the hospital supported the medical community. Promoted to Assistant Administrator, she managed a number of departments and worked collaboratively with a bariatric team to launch the weight loss surgery program as well as the thoracic oncology program. Kelly considers herself a hands-on leader and feels she was well prepared to take on full operational responsibility when she was appointed Chief Operations Offi cer in 2011.

“Meals on Wheels Volunteers

S E N I O R R E S O U R C E A S S O C I A T I O N

Summertime in Indian River County has things to do that you may not have thought of doing. It’s a great time to volunteer. Many volunteers leave the area which creates a shortage for much needed services for our elderly; one of the services is Meal on Wheels provided by the Senior Resource Association (SRA).

The Senior Resource Association is a non-profi t organization that serves adults age 60 and over. One of their programs is Meals on Wheels; it meets the needs of homebound seniors by delivering hot, nutritious meals to those unable to shop or cook for themselves. This also ensures a daily safety check and friendly interaction to help minimize social isolation. Meals are made by trained food and nutrition staff at the School District of Indian River County and delivered by volunteers Monday through Friday. SRA Meals on Wheels also offer the following:

• Meals on a private pay basis and frozen meals can even be purchased for the weekend. The cost is $5.50 per meal.

• Traditional Meals on Wheels funded through the Area Agency on Aging.• Emergency Meals on Wheels provided at no cost to qualifi ed clients for up to four weeks. • Social Congregate Meals for mobile older adults so they can interact and

enjoy a hot, nutritious meal with others.• Pet Meals on Wheels is sponsored by the Humane Society of Vero Beach through a grant from the Banfi eld Chairitable Trust. Pet owners receive a

monthly supply of pet food. For detailed information for services and eligibility call SRA at 772-794-1142,

email them at [email protected], or visit www.seniorresourceassociation.org. For many of us a healthy meal is “a given” yet in our own community that

same meal for others may not even exist. You can volunteer daily, weekly, monthly, when you can. Businesses can even adopt a route which works well for businesses and their employees. Volunteers are screened through background checks and receive training prior to their service. Individuals who work in healthcare or law

Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) released a report about antibiotic resistance around the world. In light of this report being released, I thought it was timely to talk about what antibiotic resis-tance is, why it matters to all of us, and what we can do to prevent it!

Antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections and are used to treat many ill-nesses including respiratory, sinus, skin and urinary tract infections. Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria evolve or change so that they no longer respond to antibiotics that traditionally would have killed that type of bacteria. Probably one of the most well-known types of resistance is MRSA, which stands for Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus. To put this in simple terms, it means that the Staphylococcus Aureus bacteria is not able to be killed by the antibiotic Methicillin. Therefore, MRSA has to be treated by a different kind of antibiotic.

It is important to understand antibiotic resistance because there have been no major new types of antibiotics developed in the past 30 years. Therefore, when one type or class of antibiotic stops work-ing, another one needs to be prescribed. However, because there are a limited number of choices of classes of antibiotics, it is possible to reach a point where there are NO options to kill a particular bacteria. The WHO report references this by stating “that this serious threat is no longer a pre-diction for the future, but is happening right now, in every region of the world and has the potential to affect anyone, of any age, in any country.” They released several key fi ndings and one of those was “people with MRSA are estimated to be 64% more likely to die than people with a non-resistant form of the infection. Resistance also increases the cost of healthcare with longer stays in hospital and more intensive care required.”

So, with this very serious and alarm-ing news, what can we do to prevent this from happening? As individuals, we can:

• Make sure that your immunizations are up to date. There are some immunizations, such as the pneumonia vaccine, that will help prevent pneumococcal disease. It is indicated for those who are 50 and over and for certain patients who are more at risk for developing pneumonia. So, if you are a candidate, get immunized. If you are not sure, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

• Take antibiotics ONLY when prescribed by a doctor and take the entire course of

I met Judy in the park and we began talking. She was living in United Arab Emirates with her husband and daughter when 9-11 happened and like so many others, life is not the same since then. With only 24 hours’ notice, Judy and her daughter were sent back to the United States in October by the company her husband was working for. He returned 5 months later unemployed and shortly thereafter passed away.

What followed didn’t get any easier. “We lost everything, including our lovely Vero riverfront home and a business I was building to help support my family,” Judy said. I was having medical concerns in 2013 and had no health insurance. I fi nally made an appointment with Dr. Saver, my physician for the 17 years; he explained that I needed to see a urologist and also needed a CAT scan and MRI.Feeling overwhelmed and not sure where to turn Dr. Saver recommended I talk to Leigh Anne Riddle R.N., the We Care Program coordinator.

The We Care Program is a physician driven program that helps residents in Indian River County receive medical care when they are uninsured and do not have the fi nances for medical care. Local phy-sicians donate their time and expertise. Judy told me “Leigh Anne was wonder-ful. She guided me through the applica-tion process and by January 2014 I was able to access We Care services. I was able to see the urologist, Dr. Tardiff, who was wonderful and was able to get the MRI and CAT scan.” With tears in her eyes, Judy said to me “I am humbled by the ex-cellent care I receive and I am not treated any differently than patients who are well

insured. I had never considered myself “indigent.”

Judy has received specialty care and services she needs for her health and has a sense of relief that as she restores her health she can restore her life. I also had teary eyes and asked Judy if she would be willing to share her story so others would know of the importance of We Care and how donations stay in our county to pro-vide care to those who live in our county. Judy paused, smiled, and said yes with confi dence. “We Care volunteer physicians and staff offer hope, foster dignity, and provides medical care for those truly in need. Why would I say no?” said Judy.

Thank you Judy and thank you We Care volunteers. I look forward to seeing a happy and healthy Judy again; who got help and medical care from physicians who generously volunteer for the We Care Program.

For more information about the We Care Program or to volunteer call the Indian River County Medical Society: 772-562-0123. Donations can be made on-line at www ircms.org/foundation.html.

The largest association of pharmacists in the United States is the American Pharmacists Association (APhA). More than 60,000 practicing pharmacists, phar-maceutical scientists, student pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and others advancing the profession are members of APhA. APhA’s mission is to “improve people’s health through pharmacists’ patient care services.” Its House of Delegates is represented by more than 450 elected members from 50 state associations. On March 31, 2014, Theresa Tolle, pharmacist and owner of Bay Street Pharmacy was elected as Speaker-Elect to its House of Delegates. What an honor and responsibility!

Theresa will serve the fi rst year as Speaker-Elect and will serve two years as Speaker and APhA Trustee. As Speaker of the House, she is charged with pre-siding over the House of Delegates and helping guide the policy-making process.

Pharmacists are an important member in a person’s health care team and they also have a critical role for ensuring safety in healthcare. Whether it is in preventing duplication of medications, education on

side effects, teaching about your medica-tions and associated diseases, or assisting with costs, pharmacists such as Theresa Tolle are invaluable to each of us. Ironically though, Medicare does not yet recognize pharmacists as “providers;” which means they do not get reimbursed for those services like many other providers do. Hopefully, APhA will be able to change that and Theresa can help with this process as part of the Board of Trustees.

This would benefi t us all and protect our rights to be informed consumers by licensed healthcare professionals.

In her election speech, Theresa said “I believe in being a servant leader and returning a portion to my profession that has afforded me much.” Theresa is humble and what she refers to as “afforded me so much” does not refer to her bank account; it is the ability to help serve those in need in so many ways.

Congratulations and thank you Theresa Tolle for caring for all of us and advocating for the best in healthcare!

Indian River County Relay for Life 2014Relay For Life is the main volunteer-driven cancer fundraising event of the American

Cancer Society. Relay gives everyone in communities across the world a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and

fi ght back against the disease. At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to 24 hours in length.

The Gold Sponsor for Sebastian’s’ Relay was SRMC, Piper was the Gold Sponsor for the RFL the Vero Beach High School and the presenting sponsor for Relay For Life of Indian River Beaches was George E Warren Corpo-ration. Thousands of volunteers and participants made the RFL a memorable and successful event.

Sleep deprivation is a growing concern that negatively impacts wellness. Grace Healthcare not only embraces this concept but they have also fi nancially invested in it. Just ask Karen, Denise, or Maria about their housekeeping commitment at Grace. Jennifer Searl Palleschi, administrator at Grace Rehabilitation gave me a tour of their housekeeping department after implementing this state of the art linen system called “Revolution.” This is not the common linen cart most of us are familiar with. The system includes top quality products that work together to enhance the healthcare environment such as no fold linens engineered to increase the effi ciency of caregivers and laundry workers and optimize patient comfort. The customized bed linen cart is an advanced solution for the distribution of clean linen and designed for the handling of linen. “The resi-dent does not have that institutional scratchy or starched feeling,” Karen supervisor of housekeeping said. “After experimenting with the linen myself I admit it has the quality that I would buy for my own home.” Grace raises the bar in health promotion and consistently delivers. antibiotics prescribed. It is not uncommon for patients to take antibiotics until they “feel better” and then have several doses left over. This trend has actually led to some of the current antibiotic resistance that we see. The problem is that when a course of antibiotics is not completed, it is possible that some, but not all, of the bacteria will be killed. The bacteria that remain unkilled can then evolve and need to be treated the next time with a differ-ent antibiotic. So, not only is it important to fi nish the entire course, but one should never start their left-over antibiotics the next time they feel sick.

• Do not share antibiotics with others. Antibiotics are prescribed by physicians because they have the expertise to de-termine what the type of infection is and what the best antibiotic to treat it is. Without that expertise, sharing antibiotics for a self-diagnosed condition could also

lead to this same resistance that we have previously discussed.

• Don’t demand that a physician pre-scribe an antibiotic. There are many types of illnesses that are viral in nature such as colds, influenza, and others. Viruses do NOT respond to antibiotics. If a phy-sician indicates that they do not want to prescribe an antibiotic and perhaps wait a few days, you should trust their judgment. They might be preventing antibiotic resis-tance by not giving you an antibiotic.

The take home message is that we can all be involved in helping prevent anti-biotic resistance. Arming yourself with knowledge is the best place to start. Feel free to discuss this with your healthcare team and if you want to read the WHO report in depth, you can fi nd it here: www.who.int/drugresistance/documents/sur-veillancereport/en/

Why Create a Family Health History?

H E A L T H H I S T O R Y

A Family Tree for HealthA family health history is a written

record of a family’s health. The history contains information about a family’s medical conditions, lifestyle habits, and where and how family members grew up.

What a Family Health History May Reveal

You can use a family health history to see if you, your children, or your grand-children might face an increased risk of developing serious health problems. These health problems might be common ones, such as heart disease, cancer, or diabetes. They could also be less common diseases that are passed from one generation to the next, such as hemophilia or sickle

cell anemia. People can’t change the genes they inherit from their parents, but they can change things like diet, physical activity, and medical care to try to prevent diseases that run in the family. This is good news because many diseases result from a com-bination of a person’s genes, lifestyle, and environment. A health care professional can use a family health history to help as-sess a person’s risk of certain diseases and might recommend actions to lower the chance of getting those diseases. Such as:

• lifestyle changes, such as eating healthier foods or exercising more

• getting certain medical tests • taking medicines that are more

effective based on your specifi c genes.

How You and Your Family May Benefi t

For older adults, a family health history might help explain why

you have developed certain health conditions. But it is important to know that simply getting older in-creases the risk of many diseases, too. Creating and sharing your family health history with your health care professional can help you be healthier and provides informa-

tion that may help your children and grandchildren

live longer, healthier lives.

ADULT DAY CARE VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION

Jude CaroleI would like to introduce to you one of our volunteers whose sense of caring for others translates into a talent for bringing joy into their lives. Jude Carole, along with her dog, Hammer, volunteer for “Dogs for Life”, a non-profi t agency devoted to improving the quality of life for people and dogs through training assistance dogs, pet therapy dogs and owning and operating an off-leash dog park. With her busy schedule, Jude fi nds time to visit our Vero Beach Adult Day Care clients every Friday morning. Jude understands the therapeutic benefi ts resulting from interaction with a gentle, friendly dog and is happy to share her Dachshund, Hammer, with the clients and staff. She also shares her sense of humor, her kindness and her caring personality with us. What distinguishes Jude from other volunteers is how she goes “above and beyond” this sharing experience. Throughout the year, Jude designs and creates unique gift bags fi lled with tasty treats and assorted items appropriate for each holiday for each client and staff member. She is generous with her time and money and brings smiles and joy to our clients’ faces each visit. Jude’s dog, Hammer, patiently spends time with the clients and makes cat and dog treats (along with his “mom”, Jude) for the clients and staff to take home to their own pets. Our clients and staff always look forward to a visit from Jude and Hammer each week!

MEALS ON WHEELS VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION

Tom HendricksTom Hendricks, our volunteer of fi ve years, has the special ability to make social connections and provide the support the Meals on Wheels program is known for. Tom recognizes the pride his clients have and tries to assist while respecting their privacy. He uses attentiveness, fi nesse and skills he learned from past work experiences to build strong bonds and friendships. Tom says in addition to providing nourishing meals, it is gratifying to help clients overcome everyday challenges, such as changing clocks, adjusting electronics and providing a helping hand wherever needed. During our “March for Meals Week” he was determined that a 100 year old client be delivered a birthday celebration in addition to a meal. Tom personally delivered fl owers and a cupcake along with the Indian River County Sheriff’s Department (a Meals on Wheels delivery participant) to make her day extra special. Tom has also contributed to our SRA Meals on Wheels organization by promoting team building and recruiting fi ve other individuals to join the Meals on Wheels volunteer delivery team. We can always depend on the solid support we receive from Tom Hendricks.

Bob BenacBob has been a staple in our organization, lending his talents in 360 degree style! The offi ce lights up when he comes in because if he isn’t asking us what he can do to help, he is making us laugh!!! Having been a caregiver for his wife, who suffered with Alzheimer’s Disease, Bob has an uncanny understanding of the dynamics needed in our respite program and the Virtual Dementia Tour. But it is his outstanding leadership in forming the men’s caregiver support group that has raised our program through the roof. Arranging educational fi eld trips, bring-ing in resource speakers and monitoring group discussions for “guys only”, Bob has made an indelible impact on the lives of our families! His beautiful view of life, his humor and quiet sense of purpose raises us up every moment.

Mary FallonMary’s dry New York humor starts the minute she walks in the door and we love it! In fact, her presence is so much fun, one hardly notices the incredible effi ciency with which she runs the Virtual Dementia Tour program. Mary has made it her mission to assure that this program reaches every person in Indian River County, to heighten awareness and sensitivity towards those suffering with dementia. As Mary quickly grew the program, taking it “on the road,” to include ALFs, SNFs and police/fi rst responders, she drolly noted “We’re gonna need a bigger boat.” Mary is building that boat with her intelligence, focus and easy leadership style…the rest of us are simply trying to keep up with her!!!!

Linda Roberts Becomes Certifi ed Philips Lifeline AutoAlert Provider

Linda Roberts, Indian River Medical Center Lifeline program coordinator, is now a certifi ed Philips AutoAlert pro-vider, having completed a full training curriculum and certifi cation program designed and offered by Philips Lifeline.

AutoAlert is the fi rst medical alert pendant that can automatically call for help if it detects a fall, even when the subscriber is immobilized or doesn’t push his or her button. To receive this certifi cation,

Roberts completed all of the training modules and passed a fi nal assessment focused on AutoAlert’s fall detection capabilities and how the service helps seniors live more independently in their homes.

Falls account for more than 60 per-cent of all nonfatal-injury emergency department visits in the 65-and-older population, with 40 percent of nursing home admissions being related to them. This group is three times more likely to be hospitalized due to fall-related injury than younger persons. The mortality rate from falls has been determined to be 67 percent when “lie times” were more than 72 hours, as opposed to 12 percent when “lie times” were less than one hour.
