Action taken to tidy up the south of the county has resulted in over 1,000 litter clearing notices being issued in the last year. Durham County Council’s neighbourhood wardens handed them out between August 2010 and September 2011 to tackle problems in Wear Valley, Teesdale and Sedgefield areas - including in Shildon. A number of litter clearing notices led to successful court prosecutions for residents who failed to clean up their properties or land. Under the Environ- mental Protection Act 1990 and the Clean Neighbour - hoods and Environment Act 2005 the council can now request owners or occupiers to clear any land that is defaced by litter or refuse that is detrimental to the local area. Anyone served with a litter clearance notice must clean up their yard or garden, and failure to comply can result in the issuing of a fixed penalty fine. Failure to pay this can lead to prosecution. Richard Brown, neighbour - hood warden coordina- tor (south), said, “There are 1,000 cleaner yards, gardens and pieces of land in south Durham, which can only be a positive step. “We are committed to providing safer and cleaner communities by ensuring that land in the area is kept free of rubbish, litter and refuse.” Residents in Shildon are being invited to have their say on how the unique character of the town should best be protected. Draft character appraisals have been produced by Durham County Council on a series of historic villages, inluding Edmund- byers, Eggleston, Ireshop- eburn, Newhouse West, Blackdene, Muggleswick, Newbiggin and Shildon con- servation areas. Sandra Robertson, design and historic environment team leader said, ”The purpose of character appraisals is to make sure that the villages’ unique characteristics and important historic features are preserved, whilst ensuring the communi- ties offer an environment which meets the expec- tations and demands of modern day life. “Because each settlement is different it’s important that the people living in them have the chance to have their say via public consultation. I really hope residents will help us build a detailed picture of what is special about where they live.” The appraisals recommend ways to improve upon and manage change within historic areas and provide an interesting history of their development over time. The Shildon Con- servation Area is focused on the surviving elements of the old Stockton & Darlington Railway and the Soho Works. It includes a number of listed buildings including the engine shed and stables. The consultation closes on Friday 21st October. Rail preservation open dayThe Durham Locomotive Preservation Group in con-junction with Rail Restora-tions North East are holding their annual open day on Saturday 8th October from 10am to 4pm at Hackworth Park in Shildon. The Norwood steam engine will be available to view as

well as parts of the new G5 which is another steam engine that is being built at this moment in time. There are many other main line railway carriages and other vehicles to view. “Everyone is welcome, so come on down to Hackworth Park” said a spokesperson.

Pupils enjoy food lessonsLocal youngsters from Sunnydale School visited Maralena’s Italian restaurant in Shildon’s Main Street recently, to learn all about food and healthy eating. The visit was funded by the government scheme Let’s Get Cooking where the school received £1,000 of funding to run 12 weeks of cookery courses at Maralena’s.Pupils are joined by their parents to learn how to make healthy food, such

as fresh pizza and pasta dishes made from scratch with fresh ingredients. They then cook the fruits of their labour and everyone can join in with a tasting session.Michelle Postma from Sunnydale Shcools said, “We’re trying to create a healthy eating culture. The pupils love it. They enjoy the cooking and can’t wait to go back. They also get a geography lesson as they find out where in Italy the food comes from.”

John Bennett, of Gibson Street, Close House, appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court to face a charge that, on 15th August, in Coundon, he conspired jointly with Barry Nicholson to rob another man. The court heard that Nicholson was due to appear at Durham Crown

Court in December and that the Crown Prosecutor was requesting bail conditions to be imposed upon Bennett, as the robbery had included violence. The 47 year-old was released on unconditional bail and will now appear at Durham Crown Court on 6th October.

People living around the Elm Road Club area are rather concerned that an accident is waiting to happen. Three horses have been roaming loose around the back of Elm Road Club since Sunday 25th September. They have also been spotted in the bottom field before the houses on Adelaide Bank, on the Millennium Green and Tunnel Top area. They have wandered onto the road, stopping traffic and causing chaos. The police have been informed numerous times and the R.S.P.C.A. is also aware of the situation.“The people who own these three horses must know they are missing and it appears as if they don't care about them,” said one local

rice, sauces, UHT milk, sugar and tinned products such as vegetables, meat, fish, and sponge puddings. The Durham Foodbank provides short-term emergency food for people in crisis, giving them enough food for three days.A spokesperson for Timothy Hackworth said, “Here at

the school we want to help the Durham Foodbank feed people in need. Please join with us by giving dried and tinned food so people don’t go hungry.”Food can be taken along to the school anytime until Thursday 20th October when it will be collected by members of the Centre.

In police interview Hodgson stated that he would have sold the Carpet Cleaner for £20 in order to buy food as he was short of cash. Hodgson, had been released from a two year custodial sentence for supplying heroin in November 2010,

but had been recalled for 28 days last August. He was released on 11th September on licence until 18th October. Hodgson, who is currently on a methadone treatment programme, lives with his mother and, due to a problem with his benefits, was finding life to be a struggle. The District Judge sentenced him to a six months conditional discharge, but awarded no costs or compensation.

Old football photo turns up some info

The photo above was printed in the Crier issue 529 after it was found in a house clearance in Shildon, with little to no informa-tion to go on. After appearing in the Crier, former Shildon schoolmaster Herbert Beaumont has informed us that the team in the photograph is in fact a Morcambe Airforce team circa 1941/42.The picture was taken at Morcambe’s old football

ground specifically of team 7/RC (Recruitment Centre) before the final of an RAF competition against RAF 9 School of Technical Training. All men are RAF personnel from the main training centre at Morcambe. Mr Beaumont is pictured front row, second from the right. If anyone knows if any other locals feature in the photograph, please let us know.

The Grey Horse’s most recent game against Bede started off very well when Jeff Dixon made a surging run down the right hand touchline. His deep cross caused all sorts of problems in the home defence, where Harry Thompson was on hand to poke the ball home from six yards out to give a 1-0 lead with barely three minutes gone. That unfortunately was the only bright spot in the first

Shildon Jubilee FC had two impressive winsShildon Jubilee FC had two impressive wins recently, the first being a 5 – 1 away win against Shildon Railway in the County Cup.The Jubilee started brightly with free flowing passing unlocking the B.R. defence. Their persistence paid off when Danny Shoulder opened the scoring. With Dean Halpin in Jubilee's goal pulling off some fine saves, half time arrived with the score 1 – 0.A tactical change in the 2nd half, swapping Mick Kirkbridge onto the wing and Brendan Jary up front, opened the way for another goal. Mick Kirkbride found Danny Shoulder for his second.Shortly after there was

some good play from the B.R. A looping cross was dropped into the box for an easy conversion, making it 2 – 1.It was 3 – 1 when Danny Shoulder completed his hat-trick with a cheeky chip over the keeper.Jubilee were then awarded a penalty which Luke Ingledew converted.Just before full-time it was 5 – 1 when Danny Thomas' rasping shot gave the keeper no chance.Jubilee then played a very entertaining game against the Cumberland. The home side took the lead when Danny Shoulder went through the Cumberland defenders and slotted the ball past the keeper.

It was then 2 – 0 with Danny Thomas smashing in a 20 yard shot.Cumberland fought back scoring from a free kick.In the 2nd half Jubilee extended their lead when Brendan Jary out-jumped the keeper and headed into the top corner. It was then 3 – 2 as the Cumberland scored another goal.Immediately after, Anthony Gillan fired into the top corner for 4 – 2.With the game moving fast and both teams attacking it was then 4 – 3 as Jubilee let their guard down.Just before the final whistle Jubilee secured the victory when Danny Thomas scored from outside the box, making the final score 5 – 3.

half, as Bede created three chances of note and scored three goals.Half - time came and manager Dougie Grant switched formation and changed four players in an attempt to kickstart the Shildon side. After ten minutes of good pressure, another high ball somehow found its way to the feet of the Bede forward, who brushed aside his marker and fired

into the net to give a 4-1 lead.A few more chances came and went for the away team, but Bede had the final say when their 5th chance of the game resulted in their 5th and final goal.A bad day for Shildon Grey Horse and manager Dougie Grant was at a loss to explain the team’s poor performance.Next game home to Hylton.

Disappointment for Grey Horse

The £100 monthly draw winner for September at Shildon AFC was number 20, David Matthews.Shildon’s next game is at home to Bishop Auckland on Saturday 8th October,

kick off 3pm.Their next two games will be played away to Billingham Synthonia on Wednesday 12th October and Stokesley Sports club on Saturday 15th.
