What perhaps isolates the Swiss guitar scene, at leastfrom the experience gained at the Winerthur GuitarFestival, are cultural and economic factors. Norhert Schneider and Band in Winterthur'sfamous Albani Music Club,

is true to most start-up events of this l<ind, and the festivalshows many signs of development. Concerts rule here aspreviously mentioned, and lectures, masterclasses, guitarexhibitions etc. have yet to mal<e a significant marl<. So ifyou are considering attending this festival, it is recom-mend that you consider the invited guests carefully sincethese people wi l l be the focus of your t ime spent here.

Winterthur is Switzerland's 6th biggest city. It is situated20 l<ilometres north of Turich and has excellent transportlinl<s. Since Turich airport is the European hub for air trav-el, it is a surprisingly excellent location for a guitar festi-val. At first it seems Zurich would have been the obviouschoice for hosting the festival, but the event was started inWinterthur by a local guitar shop, and when the membersof the Eos Guitar Quartet tool< it over they l<ept the festi-val located at its spiritual home. Although principally anindustrial city, for the short-term visitor Winterthur offers alot, particularly with respect to the arts and the beautifulcity surrounds, and with Zurich so close you would be ableto experience Swiss cultural life with ease.

The format of this event is in fact it 's biggest sellingpoint. And that is a very noteworthy quality as the standardformat is the most difficult thing for the guitar festival toescape. The festival collaborates with the city's artisticcentre l<nown as the Casino Theatre, and the product ofthat relationship is a slicl< and interesting set of concerts. It means there is a real arts centre infrastructure for the

festival to worl< with, providing the benefit of trainedstaff, office space, tech support and the lil<e. Instead ofhaving concerts in one or perhaps two nominated venues, the Winterthur team instead put on concerts in differentvenues to complement the artists that are performing. This variety even extends to the time of day concerts areheard. So if you come here, you may experience concertswith a morning coffee in a historic Swiss house, in a visualarts centre, a traditional theatre, a jazz cafä, a bar, a for-mer industrial space and so on. And this really does l<eepthe interest levels up, pul l ing off var iety better than anyother event of its l<ind that I l<now of.

I wish to highl ight what this country offers the world ofclassical guitar. It seems this area is l(nown to studentsand professional guitar players, but is perhaps neglectedsomewhat by amateur players. Change seems to be on thehorizon, and during my visit I overheard very excitingplans for the next few foreseeable events. 0f course, if youare interested to l<now the E0S Quartet for any reason/then clear ly this is the place for you.The quartet wi l l nor-mal ly perform in the large theatre, and are general ly onhand for classes and social time throughout the days ofthe fest ival . This is very much the insiders' pic l< of thesmal l fest ival bunch.
