EDITORIALMost sports se6m to rely on sponsorship nowadays to maintain theiradministralion and fund tournarnsnls. Chess, too, is sseking to iump onthe bandwagon.

This is not surprising. Chess has long been run on a shoestring. Theaverage club player pays about a dollar a week for his night's pleasure, though in some cases, this increases to two or threa dollars wh6n onsincludes tea money, altendance fes or whatever th€y call it. Where elsecan one get a night's aclivity for such a smallsum?

When a club comes to run a tournamenl lt ls then that a need ls seenfor sponsorship to cover hall hire, refreshmonts and prizes etc. This allsounds very logical but obtaining the funds is not easy as many willIestify. Since some sports seem able to garner large amounts by thismethod, we wonderod why chess seemed unable to do so.

One large chsss event this year named a sponsor who supplied whatwe would call a piltance. w6 suspsct that that was not an isolated caseand hesitaie to check up on the malter in case we become toodisgusted

We believe those who seek sponsorship for chess are handicapped. Not, we hasten lo add, physically or mentally, but they lack groundsupport. Any businessman who considers sponsoring chess looks aroundfor places to advsrtise his product or ssrvice and finds chess is almost asecret society.

It is time that clubs and individuals made a real effort to have chessnews published. According to someono who should know, there are ninetimes as many people interosled in chess than there are in the clubs. W6appreciate that news/sporls editors are nol always aware of thopopularity of chess and often do not publish material supplied but w6have to changa that attitudo. What is needed is a constant gtream ofcopy to the oditors, whether published or not Evontually, they willget rhemossage Of course, to achieve this, clubs may have to pay. "Nobodydoes nuttin'for nunin'nowadays". Not even sponsors.

Bll Bill CoxBecently arrived at New ZealandChess Supplies are a couPle ofgames collactions somewhat outof ths ordinary in content, but t'tot

ln styls.

They are "Chess in USSR", twovolumss covering th€ 55th and(preliminary rounds) 56th USSR

championships, plus sorne otherhigh quality games.

Though printed in llaly, thoformat ls pure lnformator and usesall of that publication's stylos -symbol annotalion, oPdnings codesetc, and a list of commentatorsthat reads like a Who's Who ofHussian chess, headed bY th€World Champion GarY KasParovand former champion SmYslov.

The first volume (both arenumbered l!), dealing with th€ 55thchampionship, suffers from somemislakes but the ones I did findwere minor. lt covers allthe games

in the 17-round tournamonl andhas a section for theoreticalnovelties. lt costs 334.50.

The second volume has 267pag€s (100 more than the other)and costs more, of course, $39.50.It cov6rs selection tournaments(first league) for lhe 56th cham-pionship (held in September thisyear). The gam6s are not so haa-vily annotated but thsre is an

additional ssction ol 178 annota-16d gamsd, including the womon'sWorld ChampionshiP match bet-wean Chiburdanidze and loseliani;and the novelties s€ction. Boththese sections arg broken downinto th6 lnformator openings clas-sifications A-E.

h also has an index of oPenings(which the previous ons has not)and rssults tablos of some othertournaments.

The team of commentators is

different, five lGMs, ol whomSveshnikov and Kholmov are themost familiar namos; eight lMs, adozen mast€rs plus a candidatemaster.

Thera is a huge amount ofmaterial in lhese two well Presen-ted volumes, enough to keep anychsss addict busy for months andat the price are excellent value formoney. The lnformator style maynot bo lo overyone's tasle butthen, it is hard ro satisfy every-body.

Hussian chess domination maY

be declining slightly as the Westerncountries incr€ase in IGM strength, but il still remains one of rhoirmajor sports so lhe games andanalyses are of the usualverY highslandard.
