What is a Blade?
Blade-server with its cover on ready for insertion into the BladeCenter Chassis
• A “Blade” contains the core components of a server• Each Blade has:
Processor(s) Memory Internal storage (optional) Network Interface Cards (NIC) Optional plug-in components
• The Blade-server plugs into the midplane of a “Chassis” that provides common functions as:
Management console Access (KVM) Power supplies Cooling Fans Network Connectivity ( LAN, SAN, NAS, HPC) Shared media devices (CD-ROM and diskette drives) Optional Modules to support additional functionalities

JS21 - Memory
The BladeCenter JS21 supports:● Double Data Rate (DDR) ECC
Registered SDRAM memory ● 4 DIMM slots, populated in
matched pairs● The installed DIMMs on a
BladeCenter JS21 must be all PC2-3200 (400 MHz) or PC2-4200 (533 MHz). A mix of the two is not supported in a single BladeCenter JS21.
● A pair of installed DIMMs must be the same size.

PCI-Express
– Point to point serial interconnect with packetized, layered protocol
– 2.6 Gbits/s per-pin pair in each direction (speed scale in future generations)
– Dual simplex connection– Scalable bus widths– Embedded clocking technique using
8 bit/10 bit encoding– Isochronous Data transfer support– Compatible with PCI at the software
layers
PCI-Express (PCI-E) is the successor to PCI and PCI-X bus systems, realized by point-to-point implementation with the following general characteristics:

JS21 - I/O Connectivity
JS21 blade server with no daughter cards installed
With additional Dual Gigabit Ethernet daughter card installed
With future high-speed PCI-E daughter card installed*
*PCI-E daughter cards not yet available
With integrated PCI-Express and support for legacy I/O adapters, the JS21 offers backwards compatibility for BladeCenter and forward compatibility for connectivity to the high-speed fabric of BladeCenter H Note additional connectors
for high-speed backplane

JS21 - SAS Storage Subsystem
● Up to two internal 2.5" 10,000 rpm Small Form Factor Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) hard disk drives for up to 146GB of storage
● Integrated support for RAID-10 mirroring
● SCSI-based enterprise reliability combined with increased performance

JS21 - Diagnostics Tools
● Light Path Diagnostics● Power-on self-test (POST)
– Firmware checkpoints and error codes The firmware checkpoints are progress codes that your blade server displays during POST.
● Firmware error codes and location codes– Some firmware error codes also include location codes. The location code
information is required to identify the failing component.● Diagnostic utilities for the Linux and AIX operating systems
– Available from IBM http://www.ibm.com/servers/eservers/support/bladecenter/ ● To run stand-alone diagnostics you must establish a Serial Over LAN (SOL) connection
and start an SOL session on the blade server. Then you can: – Run stand-alone diagnostics from CD-ROM – Run stand-alone diagnostics from management (NIM) server
