pResident’s RepoRt August 2014

First up, I thank each and every one of the members present at the AGM, for having the confidence in me, to take our great club into the next 50 years. I will give it my best shot, however, I also give notice that this year will be the last that I serve as President.

How do I, or we, inject new blood into the running of QVVA?

I ask myself this question before every AGM, and like past years, I again have the same committee. Not that I am complaining, for we all work well together and for that I am thank full. It is time, however, for fresh blood to run QVVA. We all need a break.

Over the next eleven months I will be asking all members to think about taking a committee position and help drive our club into the next 50 years.

There a lot of new and younger members who have the knowledge and fresh ideas to move QVVA along. More about this at the coming meetings and in my reports.

Well done to the current committee for accepting positions at the AGM last month. I know some of you wanted to step down but when nominations from the floor stalled, you accepted the position to let our club forge ahead. I am sure we will all pull together and keep our club the best multi make club around.

As you know we will be celebrating our 50th in 8 weeks. Clint and his committee have made a few changes to the format. We have dropped 2 weekends from the programme and have a third two day event. By doing this change it should encourage more out of town enthusiasts to join with us celebrating our golden anniversary. More on this at the next meeting.

If you were at the last meeting you would have seen a new club shirt that Clint and Lynda had organised to take us into the next 50 years. If you would like to purchase the new shirt we would like sizes to help with ordering. There will be a list circulating at the meetings for this purpose.

On the swap front, we have been advised by Capalaba College that the grounds are no longer available to us, because they have the Chandler Markets coming to the area we use for parking. This will be on a weekly basis and is more profitable to them. I have looked at a few of the suggested new sites and Balmoral High was looking promising until I had the “sorry can’t help” Phone call. I have to find a site fast, as advertising has to be done by 1st October.

If you know of a fenced site preferably on the south side that has both parking and swap areas please contact me ASAP.

Vale Geoff Bernhagen

Geoff Bernhagen, long- time member of BVAC and shorter time member of QVVA, turned off his ignition for the

last time on July 4, 2014. Geoff, born in 1932, grew up in the Toogoolawah area and never lost that friendly

country-boy demeanour. With training in the motor field and living in close proximity to Lowood Raceway in its

heydays , Geoff’s early interest, naturally enough, was in motor racing. He held records in endurance and

consumption trials. His little record-holding NSU is still to be seen in a private museum back in his boyhood

territory.

However those of us who have been around the vintage motoring scene for the past fifty years or so will remember

Geoff more for being at the forefront of many a fine observation rally or petrol-consumption run. His organisation

and clear directions never left anyone fuming, lost in the wilderness!

Geoff was a meticulous restorer and many fine cars passed through his hands and were the better for it. I

remember some of the cars he rallied: in the vintage era an Austin 12-20, a little Austin 7-sized Triumph, his

beautiful Minerva, a Swift and lately his veterans, a Very rare Waverley and a Humberette light-car. I’m sure there

were more that have slipped my memory.

I have often wondered, after visiting Geoff, just how he managed such restorations without leaving behind a grain

of sawdust or a greasy rag. Those of us who knew him well realised he was thorough to the point of being

obsessive- compulsive but that didn’t hurt anyone – well maybe it drove those closest to him a little mad – but he

surely turned out some magnificent restorations.

Geoff’s career both as a motor mechanic and as a salesman in the motoring field led to his having both a large

number of contacts and a wealth of knowledge in our hobby. Many a time when a member has been searching for

a part or a supplier, I’ve heard Geoff say, “I know where there’s one of those!” or “I know where you can get that!”

Mind you, let’s not “gild the lily”, Geoff could be a bugger about it. It was no good trying to pass things on second-

hand. Geoff had to be approached personally and he did love the kudos of it all. But hey, who of us is perfect.

Geoff has been a great friend to me and to many others and we’ll certainly miss him around the rally “circuits”. If

there is a Hereafter, surely Geoff is there somewhere among the cars, probably telling Jack Brabham, “I know

where there’s one of those!”

How stupid is stupid???

GAS BILL you owe $0.00 - true story

A man living in Kandos (near Mudgee in NSW, Australia ) received a bill for his as yet unused gas line stating that he owed $0.00.

He ignored it and threw it away.

In April he received another bill and threw that one away too.

The following month the gas company sent him a very nasty note stating that they were going to cancel his gas line if he didn't send them $0.00 by

return mail.

He called them, talked to them, and they said it was a computer error and they would take care of it.

The following month he decided that it was about time that he tried out the troublesome gas line figuring that if there was usage on the

account it would put an end to this ridiculous predicament.

However, when he went to use the gas, it had been cut off.

He called the gas company who apologised for the computer error once again and said that they would take care of it. The next day he got a bill for

$0.00 stating that payment was now overdue.

Assuming that having spoken to them the previous day the latest bill was yet another mistake, he ignored it, trusting that the company would be as

good as their word and sort the problem out.

The next month he got a bill for $0.00. This bill also stated that he Had 10 days to pay his account or the company would have to take steps to

recover the debt.

Finally, giving in, he thought he would beat the gas company at their own game and mailed them a cheque for $0.00. The computer duly processed his

account and returned a statement to the effect that he now owed the gas company nothing at all.

A week later, the manager of the Mudgee branch of the Westpac Banking Corporation called our hapless friend and asked him what he was doing

writing cheque for $0.00.

After a lengthy explanation the bank manager replied that the $0.00 cheque had caused their cheque processing software to fail. The bank could

therefore not process ANY cheques they had received from ANY of their customers that day because the cheque for $0.00 had caused the

computer to crash.

The following month the man received a letter from the gas company claiming that his cheque had bounced and that he now owed them $0.00 and unless he sent a cheque by return mail they would take immediate

steps to recover the debt.

At this point, the man decided to file a debt harassment claim against the gas company. It took him nearly two hours to convince the clerks

at the local courthouse that he was not joking.

They subsequently helped him in the drafting of statements which were

considered substantive evidence of the aggravation and difficulties he had been forced to endure during this debacle.

The matter was heard in the Magistrate's Court in Mudgee and the outcome

was this:

The gas company was ordered to:

[1] Immediately rectify their computerised accounts system or Show cause, within 10 days, why the matter should not be referred to a higher court

for consideration under Company Law.

[2] Pay the bank dishonour fees incurred by the man.

[3] Pay the bank dishonour fees incurred by all the Westpac clients whose cheques had been bounced on the day our friend's had been processed.

[4] Pay the claimant's court costs; and

[5] Pay the claimant a total of $1500 per month for the 5 month period March to July inclusive as compensation for the aggravation they had

caused their client to suffer.

And all this over $0.00.

Who employs these idiots?

EKKA Wednesday 13th August 2014

After meeting at the Tygum Lagoon, QVVA members drove around the corner and into Seasons Retirement Village at Waterford West. Long time QVVA member, Von Perrett, has lived at Seasons for two years and arranged for us to show our cars to the residents in return for a delicious morning tea. Many residents met us at the men’s shed where we displayed our cars and Clint gave a short talk about each car. Some of the residents had owned or worked on similar cars to ours. Col took a couple of people for a ride around the complex in his Buick. One lady had a photo of her mother, who was aged about three at the time, sitting in her father’s 1903 Oldsmobile. We all enjoyed sitting in the sun, meeting and chatting to the residents and have been invited to return. We may make this visit an annual event. Our drive to the Bearded Dragon Hotel for lunch took us along some lovely country roads which I’m sure we haven’t been on before. It’s been a long time since rain fell at Logan Village. After lunch some of us joined Cameron and viewed the free crocodile show. This turned out to be most interesting with the handler also giving many facts about each creature he displayed. Included was a bearded dragon lizard, two different types of blue tongue lizards, a carpet python and of course the baby crocodile all of which we were able to touch. Thanks to Clint and Lynda for a very enjoyable day. BodyNomenclature Types of body following is reprinted from the S. A. E. Handbook, issued by the Society of Automotive Engineers, Inc., New

York City, N.Y. Revised by the Passenger-Car Division and approved by the Standards Committee, January, 1930.

Roadster.—An open-type body having one cross seat. A compartment in the rear deck accommodates business equipment or luggage. The top is of weatherproof fabric and may be folded. Equipment includes removable side-curtains and provision is usually made for folding the windshield.

Sport Roadster.—The rear deck is provided with a rumble seat accommodating additional passengers. Equipment frequently includes golf locker in the rear deck. In other respects this type is similar to the Roadster.

Phaeton.—An open-type body with two cross seats, usually accommodating five passengers. Folding-type windshield and folding weatherproof fabric top with removable side-curtains are usual equipment.

The seven-passenger Phaeton is generally the same except the additional length necessary for the auxiliary seats in the tonneau. Sport and Imperial Phaeton.—Similar to the Phaeton in general type with various refinements or extra equipment. Wire wheels,

trunk rack and ultra-modish finish are common attributes of this type. The Imperial type is accepted to indicate a tonneau windshield.

Touring Car.—Generally longer bodies than the Phaeton, permitting the use of auxiliary seats in the tonneau, for the accommodation of additional passengers. In other respects similar to the Phaeton. Coupe.—An enclosed single-compartment body. Passenger capacity varies with arrangement of seats or the length of wheelbase. Two doors are provided; back panels and top are permanent and the rear deck accommodates a luggage compartment. Small coupes have a single cross seat accommodating two or three passengers, while the larger coupes frequently provide a staggered seating arrangement which, with an auxiliary seat beside the driver, may accommodate as many as five passengers. The larger types are also generally provided with quarter windows.

Sport Coupe.—A Coupe especially adapted for sport use, with fixed top, frequently of fabric material with landau joints. The rear deck is usually provided with a rumble seat accommodating additional passengers. Various refinements or extra equipment are frequently provided such as ultra-modish finish, wire wheels, and golf club locker in rear deck. In other respects this type is similar to the Coupe.

Cabriolet or Convertible Coupe.—Similar to the Sport Coupe with provision for converting to an open-type. The rumble seat and fender wells are usual but not restrictive features of this type.

Coach.—An enclosed two-door type body, with permanent back panels and top. A full-width cross seat in the tonneau accommodates three passengers. Two separate seats in the front accommodate the driver and an additional passenger, and by folding down, allow unobstructed exit or entrance to rear-seat passengers. Fender wells and.trunk racks are frequently provided but are not inherent features of this type.

Sedan.—An inclosed four-door type of body with permanent back panels and top. A full-width cross seat in front and rear. Passenger capacity from five to seven according to wheel-base or body design. Auxiliary folding seats in rear for accommodation of extra passengers in the larger types. May or may not be provided with windows in the rear quarter.

Variations from the standard Sedan type may be variously designated as: 2-Window Sedan, 3-Win-dow Sedan, Club-Sedan, Close-Coupled Sedan, Landaulet Sedan, etc., but there is not sufficient uniformity in these variations to justify specific standardization.

Landau.—A closed-type body with provision for opening or folding the rear quarter, by the use of landau joints. This usually precludes the use of quarter windows.

Landaulet Sedan.—Similar to the Landau Sedan in appearance but made with a stationary rear quarter. Landau joints are mounted on the rear quarter but are non-operative.

Imperial Sedan.—A drop or sliding glass partition between the driver's compartment and the tonneau is the distinguishing feature between this type and the Sedan, which it resembles in all other essential respects.

Town Car.—Same as Imperial Sedan with or without rear-quarter windows and without a fixed roof over front compartment. A folding or removable weatherproof fabric top over the front compartment is a usual but not restrictive feature of this type.

Convertible Sedan.—Similar to Sedan type with provisions for converting to an open-type car. Both the all-weather feature and the top are convertible.

The distinction between the Delivery Wagon and Truck is in size and weight. The delivery wagon is usually a shaft-driven solid, or pneumatic-tired car, whereas the truck is a double-chain or shaft-driven solid or pneumatic-tired, heavier machine (not S.A.E.).

23/07/2014 Michele Andersen

Being a guest judge at MotorFest 2014 was an amazing experience. Even though by 2pm I was exhausted, I wouldn’t change a thing, I had such a great time and was so spoilt. My highlights would definitely be the VIP parking, being able to judge such amazing vehicles with help from experienced judges, getting to explore MotorFest prior to the public entry and of course you can’t forget the free lunch and thousands of ‘selfies!’

Our official day as a guest judge was due to start with a judges meeting at 7:30am. As I pulled up to Eagle Farm I was sure I was going to be late, in front of me were about 50 beautiful vintage cars stopped, waiting to enter. Thankfully as part of my guest judge’s pack I was given a VIP sign to put on my car. As I was waved to go around, I felt slightly embarrassed driving my dirty Lancer past all the immaculate vintage and classic cars!

The perks of being a guest judge didn’t stop there…while our fellow judges were setting up, the three guest judges (Kim Nepata, Rebecca Liston, and myself) sat in the sunshine watching the vehicles rolling into the venue.

At this stage I was feeling pretty nervous about how we were going to judge these 750 cars (I am definitely no expert). Thankfully in our judges meeting we found out that each guest judge was paired with an experienced judge from the Queensland Vintage Vehicle Association (QVVA) and in some of the larger categories there were multiple judges, thank goodness!

Everyone I met from the QVVA was so friendly and willing to share their knowledge and passion. I was very fortunate to be paired with Graham the president of the QVVA. Graham and I were allocated the 1940 -1959 category to judge with the help two other QVVA members.

After our meeting Graham and I had a coffee to warm our fingers as we watched the cars roll in. Graham took the opportunity to explain our judging criteria, pointing out key points on the cars we could see. Judging the cars involved locating, inspecting, collaborating, short listing and in my case (to the amusement of my new QVVA friends) taking photos with, the cars in our category. By 9:30am we had first and second place in our category decided and my phone was filling up with photos.

It was only after 10am when we were braving the crowds trying to locate the entrants for the best dressed contest that I realised how lucky we were to have had the venue to ourselves for the past few hours. Judging best dressed may sound easy but wow, it was nearly as challenging as judging the cars. By now I was exhausted and definitely ready for the delicious lunch provided.

I have so many great memories and photos from my day being a guest judge at MotorFest 2014. I can’t imagine a better way to enjoy MotorFest; I would do it again in an instant.

My day as a MotorFest judge
