The mini doppelgängers of the TV presenters were chosen for the coveted rolls after ITV scoured schools across the North East looking for little look- alikes to replace the now grown-up original Little Ant and Dec. The speaker at Ferryhill History Society’s next meeting will be Mark Ainsley, whose topic will be “The Use of Money.” His talk examines how coinage through the ages was used as propaganda, collateral and as a state-ment of status. Mark is a renowned research archaeologist who has worked with senior

luminaries at the British Museum and behind the scenes of ‘Time Team.’ His specialist period is the Anglo-Saxon and Viking era, so expect a lot of looting, pillaging and acts of violence in his narrative! The meeting will take place on Wednesday 29th January at the Eldon Arms, Ferryhill Station, at 7.30pm.

Little Ant and Dec cut the ribbon with Head teacher Sean Kavanagh.

Head teacher at Broom Cottages, Sean Kavanagh, was helped by staff to blow up over 300 balloons to be released at the event, but had a slight panic when he arrived at the school on Wednesday morning to find that they had deflated!Luckily, staff managed to re-inflate the balloons in time for the boys to cut the

ribbon and release them in celebration of the £150,000 revamp of the school's Foundation Stage.Mr Kavanagh commented, “The refurbishment has enabled us to make better use of the available space and go from a 52 to 78 place Nursery in response to high demand and we have transformed the fa-

cilities in both our Nursery and Reception Classes completely. “The new environment is more conducive to learning, it links more easily with the rest of the school and enthuses the children. “We are seeing evidence that standards are already rising.”

British Countryside Walks

Woodlands dotted with Bluebell flowers

Snowdrops and Daffodils given pleasure for hours

Cowslips, Campions, Daisies and Buttercups

People exercising their dogs along with their pups

Couples walking hand in hand we see

A stolen lover’s kiss behind the Oak tree

Cyclists and joggers along old railway line

Summer wine walkers striding out fine

Sunshine glinting through leafy canopy

Sparkling sun’s rays for all to see

Pausing halfway to eat a packed lunch

Good conversation and an apple to munch

Debating what’s the latest news

Forgetting the blisters inside our shoes

Clip clop we hear the bridle path sound

Where horses and riders can be found

In the nearby fields bleating sheep are grazing

Or the hare running at speed so amazing

Song birds chirping out their shrill song

Through the grass an adder might wriggle along

A farm we might pass through part of our mileage

Farm yard animal sounds and the smell of silage

A skylark hovers and sings overhead

Napping away from its nest we will be led

Where ever in the world you may travel abroad

Britain’s countryside grass is of greener accord

Graduates given internship at college

Four Teesside University graduates, including one from Ferryhill, have joined a college’s marketing de-partment in a bid to boost their chances of securing their dream jobs. Simon Meek, 23 from Fer-ryhill, who graduated from Teesside University last year with a degree in ‘mar-keting and advertising’, is one of the four graduates being taken on by Bishop Auckland College on a three month internship for digital marketing. Also accepted for the internship were students Adam Hudson, Steff Ellis, and Thomas Edgar.Kevin Burns, Head of Mar-

keting at Bishop Auckland College said, “This will offer invaluable industry experi-ence which will hopefully give them an advantage in the jobs market. “We have an ideal oppor-tunity to learn from four recent graduates how we can improve our marketing to attract young people to study here from across south Durham.”During their three month placements Adam, Steff, Thomas and Simon will be assisting the college with its Higher Education recruit-ment campaign as well as helping to run open events and increasing its digital marketing output.

Luke David Barron, aged 19 of Garmondsway Road, West Cornforth, pleaded not guilty to two charges of assault when he appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magis-trates’ Court recently. The assaults, on a female, were alleged to have taken place in Spennymoor, on 22nd December.

The defendant’s solicitor stated that the area where the alleged offences took place was well covered by CCTV and the CPS will now request if any footage is available. Matters were adjourned until 15th April and Barron was released on uncondi-tional bail.

Dear Editor,

This is to let everyone know that the Wednesday Bingo Club, Ferryhill Hub & formerly the Grange, Ferryhill, has moved to The Masonic Hall Lounge on January 8th 2014.

Since Cleaves Cross Grange closed in March we have been using a room at the ‘Community Hub’, as this was the only place on the estate.

We took our own bingo machine, which was bought with funds which we raised through our group. While at the ‘hub’ the machine went missing. We asked the people concerned at the hub to try and find it for us, but to no avail. We then reported the machine as being stolen to the police and received a crime number but up to now it has not been found.

We are a group of about twenty five elderly people, most of us in our eighties, and we spent seven weeks in a cold room in the hub with our coats on to keep warm as there was no heating!

The reason for moving is apparent. So we now have a lovely heated lounge to go to as from January 2014. We now have to start raising funds for a new bingo machine, which costs hundreds of pounds.

Name and address supplied.

Dear Editor,

The oven door fell off at Endeavour Woodcrafts Christmas Social Afternoon in December 2013 and now we are unable to warm up or cook the service users’ food at lunchtime.

As we are a non-profit making day service for adults with learning difficulties and mental health issues, we are finding it a real struggle to make ends meet in this harsh financial climate and funding cuts.

Therefore we wondered if any local electrical business would be willing to donate and fit a domestic electric cooker in the kitchen area for the use of those needing the service we offer at Endeavour Woodcrafts CIC.

Our Support Manager is Louise Killip and she can be contacted on 01740 657676.

Many thanks,Carole King,Endeavour Woodcrafts CIC.

Pub operating licence under reviewPolice are requesting that Llewellyns Café and Bar on Main Street, Ferryhill, has its opening hours reduced after claims that the pub has been serving alcohol to underage drinkers.Concerns raised by the police and the council’s director of public health have prompted a review of the premises’ operating licence.Currently the pub licens-ing hours are from 9am to 2am, Monday to Saturday, and between 10am and midnight on a Sunday.Police allegedly have

evidence of ‘sales after hours’ and also claim the pub failed in ‘test purchase operations’, serving alcohol to those underage.Durham County Council’s Licensing Committee is to request a change of the closing time to 11pm each night, that the pub employ door staff on certain days, and insist the pub install a CCTV system and adopt a ‘Challenge 25’ policy.Several members of Llewellyns have written to the committee to dispute the police’s allegations.

A business deal which saw North East manufacturer Ebac acquire a stockpile of 6,000 chest freezers is to give a boost to community organisations. When the County Durham company bought the Norfrost brand and machin-ery out of administration, breathing new life into the chest freezer range, the remaining stock of the Scottish business came as part of the agreement. Now, ahead of a factory sale day on Friday, January 31st and Saturday, February 1st, Ebac is offering com-munity groups around the North East the chance to get in touch for a chance to receive one of 25 freezers,

free of charge.Pamela Petty, Managing Director of Ebac, said: “We want charities, com-munity groups and not for profit organisations to get in touch, if they can put a chest freezer to good use.“The 6,000 freezers we have came as part of a larger deal, so we want to pass some on to the com-munity, in the spirit of the Ebac Foundation.“Additionally, the factory sale will be a great chance for the public to come along and get their hands on a new chest freezer before the first to be made at our factory come off the production line in a few months’ time.”

The factory sale will allow members of the public a chance to get their hands on a freezer at a sig-nificantly reduced price. It will take place at Ebac, in Ketton Way, Newton Aycliffe, from 8am to 6pm on January 31st and from 10am to 3pm on February 1st. Ebac will be offering free delivery to buyers in the local area.Representatives of or-ganisations which believe they can make good use of one of the Norfrost chest freezers should write to Pamela Petty at Ebac, Ketton Way, Aycliffe Business Park, Newton Aycliffe, County Durham DL5 6SQ.

Community to benefit from freezer stock

Pamela Petty, Managing Director of Ebac with some of the chest freezers.Man accused of stealing from OAPJohn George Kinsella, 44, from Bessemer Street, Fer-ryhill, denied two charges of burglary and one of theft at Peterlee Magistrates’ Court on Saturday 11th January. It is alleged that Mr Kinsella stole coal, tools and a

wheelie bin from an 88 year-old pensioner’s back yard on Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th January. At Newton Aycliffe Magis-trates’ Court on Tuesday 14th January, a trial date of 25th February was set, and Mr Kinsella was refused bail.

Seconds Out Boxing keeping their Guards

Seconds Out Boxing Academy have been asked to train/coach the 1st Bat-talion Scotts Guards, who are now based at Catterick Garrison. Neil Harvey (Company Sergeant), heard about the new boxing club and has approached to ask for help in coaching his squad for the inter company Northern Army Champion-ships, which are to be held in April.A squad of 18 lads visited the club for the first time last week, a large number

whom had never boxed before. They were put through a tough workout, which was described as ‘a proper beasting’ by one of the soldiers, leaving the coaches of Seconds Out, ‘really impressed’ by their levels of fitness and enthu-siasm to learn and improve on their boxing skills. One of the coaches said that, “Every guy gave 100% in everything they were asked.”Head coach Paul Eddy said, “It is a massive honour and compliment for Seconds

Out to be asked to coach a squad of men who are willing to give up every-thing for their country and we look forward to working with the guys in bringing out their full potential as boxers.” The Squad will be training at the club in preparation for the championships twice a week for the next 10 weeks.“I am sure everyone in Fer-ryhill, wish them all the very best and good luck for the upcoming champion-ships,” said Paul.
