Ken was born in Bishop Auckland but the family moved to Leeholme ten years later. Freda was born in Leeholme and the couple met at Leeholme Mission Hall while they were still at school. Ken left school at 14, starting at GW Rudd Warehouse (no relation), where he stayed for two years before joining the Navy at 16. After leaving the Navy in 1950 he started at the NCB Tursdale Workshop and Stores until he retired in 1983. Freda left school at 15, starting at Doggats in Bishop Auckland until she was called up to the Aycliffe Angels ammunition factory in 1940, where she remained until the end of the war. While Ken was Stationed in Scotland, Freda moved to the fishing village of Crail, 10 miles from St Andrews. When Ken was demobbed the couple moved to Stratford Gardens, Ferryhill, which Ken said was half way between Tursdale and Leeholme. They stayed there for 38 years before moving to their present home in Skipton Close. The couple have four sons, Allan, Les, Hugh and Stephen. They have 12 grandchildren and 11 great- grandchildren. In 1968, the Broom Cottages School under 15 team became the first school from Ferryhill to win the Durham County Schools Under 15 Cup. The Broom started the County Cup competi-tion with wins against Sedgefield Secondary School, Ferryhill Grammar School and Durham Johnston Grammar School. It took a replay to win a quarter final match against Spennymoor Grammar 1-0. A replay was also required to win the

semi-final against Richard Hind School, Stockton. Following a 1-1 draw at Stockton, the Broom won the replay at the Ferryhill Athletic ground 5-1. The opponents in the final at Dawdon CW ground on May 25th was Ryhope Grammar school. After a goalless first half, the Broom deservedly won a well contested final 2-0. During the week leading up to the County Cup final, the Broom also won the Markham Cup and the Dean Bank Aged Miners Cup.

Three days after the County Cup final, on May 28th 1968 the Broom rounded off a great season by winning the B&O County Shield when they beat Eppleton Secondary School 3-1 in the final at the Ferryhill Athletic ground.A reunion is organised for Friday, June 14th in Ferryhill Workingmen’s Club. Anyone involved with the Broom Under 15 school football team in 1968 are welcome to attend and should meet in the club at 7:30pm.

The team shown with three of the trophies in the photograph before the B & O Shield final was: Back Row: Mr Peter Scott, Geoff Gash, John Clark, Malcolm Smith, Gordon Robson, Lester Atkinson, Phil Johnson 2, Les Hopper, Bob Morgan, Mr Denis Walker. Front Row: Alan Finn, Alan Alderson, Paul Waterworth, Peter Thompson, David Tolson, Barry Stephenson, Phil Johnson 1, Neil Pearson .

Empty homes in County Durham are to be brought back into use through a new scheme aimed at increasing affordable housing.Members of Durham County Council’s Cabinet will hear next week how the authority is planning to use a £2.12m grant from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) and its own match funding to tackle the problem of long-term vacant properties. The council is planning to work with registered housing providers to purchase private sector properties in specific com-munities, bring them up to acceptable standards and offer them for rent at an affordable level.Cllr Eddie Tomlinson, Durham County Council’s Cabinet member for housing and rural issues, said: “Properties that stand empty for long periods of time often start to deterio-rate. This obviously reduces the chances of them being occupied in the future and can have a negative impact on the look and feel of the local area.“The Empty Homes Cluster Programme offers a new way of bringing these long-term empty homes back into use, providing much needed affordable housing and helping

rejuvenate communities.”Under the scheme, the council will match fund the HCA cash to purchase properties which have been vacant for six months or more. Each property will be leased to a registered provider who will use their own funds to bring it up to a decent standard and manage it for a period of 12 years. The provider will be respon-sible for the management and on-going maintenance of the property and rent collection. The council will receive a proportion of the rental income and the money generated through this will be re-invested in buying additional empty properties. The HCA and council money will cover the first two years of the scheme, during which it is hoped about 120 properties can be brought back into use.Efforts will be focused on three specific areas – Easington Colliery; South West Durham, including Eldon Lane, Coundon Grange, Dean Bank and Chilton; and, Craghead and South Moor. These areas have been chosen because more than 10 per cent of the housing stock is unoccupied.

Ferryhill’s Siobhan Murray, was dancing with delight after finding out that she had scooped one of just five prestigious bursary awards that will allow her to pursue her dream of a career in dance.Siobhan, along with Tara Sweeting, also from Ferryhill, and Stuart Thompson from Helmington Row, near Crook were nominated for the awards buy their dance tutor, Joanne Banks.Stuart was also successful, but Tara missed out on this occasion. The Elsa Wilkes Bursary Awards were presented by the International Dance Teacher’s Association (IDTA) this year.Mrs Banks, who runs Studio 10 in Spennymoor said: “We are extremely proud that two of the three dancers we put forward won two of the five awards available.“They are dedicated and talented dancers who both want a career in dance or

performing arts.“The award carries some prestige but also a financial contribution to their studies and devel-opment in dance, which will help them attend auditions and apply for full time performing arts training.“Tara also did well, the 40 plus people who took part are some of the region’s best young dancers.”To secure the award, Siobhan, 17, and Stuart, 15, had to show skill and potential in ballet, tap, modern jazz and musical theatre. Both dancers have performed with The Joanne Banks Dancers since they were in primary school and have starred on stage at Darlington Civic Theatre. The pair can be seen in the Joanne Banks Dancers annual revue show, One Day Like This, at Darlington Civic Theatre from Thursday, July 4th to Saturday, July 6th.

Dear Editor,

May I say how well kept and maintained the Sport’s Complex at Mainsforth, Ferryhill is?

The cricket pitch, bowling green, children’s play area, football pitches and surrounding areas are immaculate and the flowers are beautiful.

Well done to all concerned, a lot of hard work must go in to keeping this place a pleasure to see and visit.

Yours sincerely, Geoff Gregg, Tursdale. - ex Ferryhill.

Dear Editor,

I live in New Zealand and I am researching my late husband’s family tree.

I have an unexpected visit to the UK this month and, if anyone can help, I would appreciate meeting some of the relatives. I am staying in Coxhoe from Tuesday 18th until Thursday 20th June.

My late husband’s father was William Hutton, born in 1894 in Frederick St, Meadowfield, Brandon Colliery. William’s parents were William Hutton, born in 1858 at Coxhoe and Esther Richardson born in 1862 at Ferryhill.

William and Esther had nine children: Jane, Joseph, Mary E, Margaret, Elizabeth, William (our branch), Rhoda, John and Robert (census 1911).

Would you be able to ask your readers if they know of any descendants of this family? I can be contact via my email address.

Yours Sincerely,

Daphne Huttonemail: [email protected]

Three men, including local Ferryhill businessman, Andrew Heaviside have set themsleves the challenge of raising funds for two charities by covering one million metres over the course of the year. The three have been inspired by three-year-old Seb Gardiner and the late Philip Stephenson, who lost his six year battle against brain cancer last December at just 34 years of age.“Philip was an inspiration to the three of us and we were

privileged to complete a number of organised runs with him, the last a half marathon on 30th September last year, less than 3 months prior to his passing,” said Mr Heaviside.Since diagnosis in January 2007, Philip ran over 5598 miles raising funds for charity.“Seb started to develop a bump with a bruise on his forehead just before Christmas 2011. On 3rd February 2012 aged just 2 years and 5 months old Seb

was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL),” says Andrew. The trio are rasing funds for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research and The Brain Tumour Charity. They are looking to raise as much money as they can and secure donations can be made via their Virgin Money Giving charity page: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/challenge321.They also have a facebook page at: 3Men, 2Charities, Over 1 million metres.

A serial burglar who targetted a caravan park at Ovington, near Barnard Castle, causing thousands of pounds of damage during his stealing spree has been jailed for twelve months. Jonathan Edward Cox, of Carlton Street, Ferryhill, was caught after blood found on a duvet near the entry point in one of the burgled caravans matched his DNA profile.

Durham Crown Court was told that five caravans were burgled, all via smashed side windows that cost £300 each to repair.Hundreds of pounds of goods were then stolen from each caravan, including television sets, DVD players, games consoles and other electronic items. The burglaries all took place during last October,

in the off-season, when most owners had vacated the site. But one owner who was still there reported a man acting suspiciously.Thirty-year-old Cox, who has a history of drug abuse, admitted to five counts of burglary.Jailing Cox for twelve months, Judge Peter Kelson told him, “Your criminal record is a bad and depressing document.”

Following success in the first two rounds against Langley Park and Brandon, Mainsforth Under 15’s were hosts to Bishop Auckland in the semi final of the League Cup, on Tuesday 28th May. Batting first Bishop made a steady start, but the Mainsforth bowling attack restricted them to 70 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in their 20 overs. The wickets were shared equally between Mainsforth bowlers Connor Pearson, Ryan Dawson, Matthew Willetts and Brad Bihari. In reply the Mainsforth openers batted with composure and confidence.First to fall was Nathan Lawson, scoring an excellent 16. Opener and captain Ryan Dawson carried his bat through to finish on 37 not out. He received valuable support during his innings from Laura Jones (8) and Arron Bromley (6), and Mainsforth reached their target in a highly entertain-ing game with an over to spare. This is the first year of this competition under the management of the Durham Cricket Board.

The final against Crook takes place on Thursday 6th June at Crook, with the match starting at 6pm.The senior sides played Evenwood over the weekend and had mixed fortunes. The first XI played at Evenwood, who batted first, and at the end of their 50 overs they had 199 runs on the board. The Mainsforth innings in reply looked to start brightly with early boundaries, however the Evenwood attack eventually bowled Mainsforth out for 96 runs. In the home game Evenwood 2nd XI again batted first but were dismissed for the miserly total of 66 with Callum Walton taking three wickets for 23 runs. After a nervous start the home team reached the required runs to register their first win of the season. The weekend of 8th June sees the Mainsforth 1st XI at home to Tyneside club “Bill Quay” in a Durham Cricket League fixture. The match starts at 1.30pm. The club have full bar facilities with a friendly clubhouse, and spectators old and new are assured of a warm welcome.
