The Mayor said, “It’s always good to see nice Christmas displays and the Christmas Lights judges where once again impressed by what we saw around Ferryhill. “The difficult task is again choosing the winners and although this year’s winner was outstanding there was very little difference between 1st and 3rd places. “I would like to wish a very big thank you to all the people who decorate their homes to give a great deal of pleasure to the residents of Ferryhill over the Christmas period and long may this continue. South West Durham Training continues to see an increased demand from young people looking to embark on their appren- ticeship programmes. With exciting regional projects imminent from the likes of Hitachi, it appears many more companies are also considering just how they invest in their workforce. This of course is great news for the likes of SWDT, who for the first time have decided to increase on their tradi- tional September start. This will see two additional intakes being made in both January and March 2013. The new intakes will span a number of programmes across SWDT’s core disciplines namely; Electrical & Mechanical Maintenance, Fabrica- tion & Welding, as well as Toolmaking / Machining. Such programmes provide students a valuable, recognised vocational qualification whilst gaining first rate, hands-on experience. Monthly open evenings are currently being held allowing prospective learners and their families the opportunity to visit the new centre and learn more. The engineering industry provides a very rewarding career for many in the region and, by talking to the trainers at SWDT, it’s possible to understand just how to embark on a new and exciting career within this field. The events will take place at SW Durham Training, Aycliffe Industrial Estate, on the following dates: Wednesday 16th January, Wednesday 13th February, Thursday 14th March, Wednesday 17th April, Thursday 9th May, Wednesday 5th June and Thursday 4th July. Police are asking for in-formation after a Ferryhill teenager suffered just minor cuts and bruises when he crashed his car into the side of a house in Ferryhill Station. The elderly couple who own the property were also unhurt after the crash caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to the garage of their home. They had been in the living room at the time.John and Pam Robinson were forced to leave the house in Gipsy Lane after the crash - which happened at 5.30pm on Saturday, 5th January - also ruptured a gas pipe. Police, firefighters and agas engineer attended the incident which led to the road being cordoned off for two hours while the leak was isolated and repaired. County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue district manager, Rob Turnbull, said the driver had a “miraculous escape”. Describing the noise of the crash, Mr Robinson, 71, said, “It was tremendously

loud. My first thought wasthat an aeroplane had hit the house. We are just so pleased the lad was okay.” Mr and Mrs Robinson, whose plans to sell their home have now been put on hold while the property is repaired, were allowed to return home the same night following an assessment by a structural engineer. Mrs Robinson, 68, said, “John built the extension

himself and we only finisheditlastyear.“I just can’t believe this has happened. The gas has been turned off so we haven’t got any central heating and there is water leaking into the garage. “It’s the last thing you want to happen at the start of a new year.” Anyone who may have infor-mation about the accident is asked to contact Durham Police on 101.

Poetry CornerSnuggling In

by Gordon Harris, Ferryhill

In the silver glow of the street lamps’ glare

On footpaths a million sparkling diamonds

appear

A miracle of white crystals formed by ice

Their carpet of microscopic glaze looks nice

The ‘gritters’ are out, the night air is cold

Come dawn minus temperatures will unfold

Evergreen leaves on trees have turned white

Dahlia flowers have blacked over night

Out comes hat, scarf, gloves and overcoat

Summer sunshine’s now so remote

Snuggled up in bed, dreaming of spring

Once more to listen the Blackbird sing

In the children’s bedrooms a voice so bold

Shouts “Ma, me hot water bottle’s cold”

Da replies, “Shut up, get back to sleep”

But little Jimmy into their bed will creep

There’s ructions on and quite a to-do

Because Jimmy’s Jack Russel has sneaked in too

So the story will unfold

As they all snuggle in against winter’s cold

Dear Editor,

I can still remember when I was working at Mainsforth Colliery in the Summer of 1968 when the water flooded the J11 Coalface in the low Main Seam. Miners could only watch in disbelief as a torrent of mine water flooded the coal faces.

For many weeks miners worked hard trying to stem the flow of water. Pumps were sent underground, men and ponies worked hard to get the pumps to the water stricken coal faces, but the coal mine was doomed. Miners were told it was too dangerous to go back to coal production.

On Monday December 11, 1968, I started work at Blackhall Colliery at 3.30am in the Harvey Seam. I still recall the first Blackhall Miner that spoke to me in the Harvey Seam, a man called Tommy Hanson. The words he said were “Where do you come from?”. “Mainsforth’” I said. “Well you are now Blackhall Miners.”

Was there ever a better pit than Blackhall Colliery? I doubt it. The camaraderie and loyalty were first class. Sadly, I was made redundant at Blackhall Colliery and I was transferred to Easington Colliery. But that is another story I will narrate some time in the future.

Jimmy Taylor, Linden Grove, Coxhoe.

LettersHave your say...

Dear Editor,

Recently I have noted an increasing tendency for motorists and companies to park on grass verges, therefore destroying the grass, leaving deep, muddy ruts and very often obscuring junctions and pedestrian passage.

Now, unlike the double parking that Durham Constabulary has condoned as a ‘traffic calming measure’ in Dean Bank, this inconsid-erate parking practice actively destroys public property.

I trust measures are taken by the council to invoice motorists and companies who destroy the environment in this way. I personally do not want my council tax, already the highest in the area, to subsidise this vandalism.

Perhaps the PCSOs could compile a list of registration numbers and company names in order that billing can be correctly made.

Name and address withheld on request.

Dear Editor,

May I take this opportunity in thanking Enter CIC for the magnifi-cent Nativity Christmas Show on Friday 21st December at the old Baptist Church in Dean Bank. I was once again amazed at the high standard our children are reaching in their musical abilities.

Special thanks to Andrea Flynn and her team who teach and guide the children and bring out their best attributes. We are very lucky to have Enter CIC based in Ferryhill for use by our children and young people from all the surrounding villages, and I would encourage any families with children who may have an interest in the performing arts to get in touch with Enter CIC to see what they can offer. The children involved are of all ages and with various abilities.

Well done one and all!Councillor Brian Avery

A brilliant total of £635 has been sent to Daisy Chain, a local charity which helps families affected by autism. The money was raised by members of Ferryhill Methodist Church, who raised £300 from carol singing around pubs in December. The rest was made up

from collections taken at church services over Christmas and the church’s Friday coffee morning in December. A spokesperson for the church commented, “A big thanks to the singers and all who gave so generously. We were made very welcome in the pubs and had a good night.”
