DEDICATION

The 1955 MOUNDBUILDER is dedicated to William W. Monypeny, who for twenty-seven years has served Southwestern College. Mr. Monypeny is known to all by his warm friendli­ness, understanding of problems~ and his unselfish interest in educational and civic improvement.

At Southwestern he has been teacher, bas­ketball coach, dean of the college, and is now serving as the director of student personnel and admissions.

Mr. Monypeny has indeed been a great moti­vating force at Southwestern, and is looked upon by the entire Winfield community as a friend of education.

A fairly large number of students w.ent out for forensics activities this year. A good record was made as well as general enjoyment of the season. Several long trips were planned for the year, including those to Lincoln, Nebraska, Ada, Okla­homa, and Louisiana . The biggest one, of course, was the t rip to the national Pi Kappa Delta tournament at Redlands, California. Twodebate teams andone indivi­dual speaker went. Although playing above the ir heads against much larger schools the entire season, the Purple Team 'NOn the loyal support of the school and the townspeopl e . Against New Mexico State of Portales and Fort Ha ys State College, in early season games, the Moundbuilders turned in incredibl y good performances, only to come out with disheartening 14-7 losses in both contests. Simi lor scores were turned in from severa l other hard-fought gomes, including the Home coming game, which was played against Pittsburg State.

The Sui Iders' night to shine came against Northwestern State College of Oklahoma at Alva, when a blazing first half was enough to insure their victory.

Thi s was coach Hower's first year at Southwestern College, and judging from the vast improvement in school and team spi rit, the future footba II fortunes of Hower-coached teams can only be anticipated with optimism.

For the first time in twelve years, this spring found the Builder cagersat the N.A.I.A. Championship Tourna­ment in Kansas City's Municipal Auditorium. For a spirited student body, the possibility of again becom ing national basketball champions became more of a reality.

Our first opponent for a p I ace in the tourney was Loyola University of Los Angeles. This crack team pre­sented a formidable barrier to our sue c e s s. So enthusiastic were the Bui Iders that surprising numbers of them poured into Kansas Ci ty to wi tness the fi rst of our mat c h e s. That n i g h t between 9:00 and 10: 30, the CI C champs, backed by three-fourths of the student body, beat a tea m that was ranked so far superior to ours that the defeat echoed and re-echoed across the nation. It was well established by the spectators that Southwestern put not one man on the floor who did not in some way make himselfabsolutely indispensable to the first booming upset of the entire tourneyl Thestudent body displayed a rallying spirit workeduptoa feverish p itch. The enthusiasti c di sp lay of the rooters was so magn i fi cent that they lit era I I y led that enti re crowd into a mass of Southwestern fans! Southwestern was the underdog f(om the start. To those who knew the ropes, matc hi ng these two teams more than imp lie d the winner. A lot of money changed hands in Kansas City that night. It was inde ed a happy procession of cars and busses that rolled back across the dark highways to Southwestern ' s campus that night, while in the big city, a crushed California team packed up to go West.

The second game aga i nst Eastern Texas State Teachers College wasn I t qu i te so encouragi ng. The Lone Star team floored 0 group of p I aye r s who were crafty, fast, and well-tra ined. Southwestern set to play a tea m equal ly as good as the preceding game. The boys played hard and earnestly. Again, in the stands the re roared and c langed the hea rten ing cheers of a very representative student body. A surprisingly large number of students had returned to be staunch backers of their well-loved tea m. A Ithough the score never favored us, discourage­ment lurked nowhere in that ma mmoth arena 1 The fina I buzzer left us on the lower end of the score. Agai n the student body had brought that cro,wd to cheer for the purple and white. They wanted the worl d to know that we would not ta ke defeat lightly. A rousing S-O -U-T-H-W-E-S-T- E-R-N broke from section 21 of the arena bal­cony, and escorted a wonderfu l, hi gh spirited, and only slightly defeated Southwestern College ba ske tball team from the floor . Certa inly thi s epi c o f sp iri t and enthusiasm has proven theold proverb "Where there is no v ision, ~he peopl e per ish" to be quite true! This was the first in line of the annual lectureshipwhich is spon­sored by Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Wi Iison of Floydada, Texas. This annual event is expected to bring nation­ally known people to Southwestern College and the city of Winfield each year.

Dr. Roy L. Smith, the speaker this year, is one of the most distinguished graduates of Southwestern, and is widely known as a journalist, editor, author; and world-traveler.
