DIRECTOR’S NOTES

I teach a Theatre Appreciation class and I have every semester for forty-seven semesters. I always like to ask my students “Why do you think people make the-atre? And why go to theatre in the first place?” I ask them because I am genuinely curious about their responses. And I’ve gotten a variety of different answers over the years. Some that sound worldly and significant, even a little bit self-important sometimes (“Oh, I go to be enlightened about my world or a culture that I don’t know anything about”), some responses are personal (“I go because sometimes the story or the characters bring up difficulties I’m having in my own life and it helps me deal with my own issues.”) I like that one because often theatre demonstrates to us the strength and resolve that we need to move forward in our lives. Some answers are as simple as “I go because my friends are going … it’s a social thing.” I like that one too. Theatre can remind us that in this over- technological age there is still a human being at the core of every digital transaction. Sometimes it is sim-ple economics (“this performance was free.”) But I have found that the most fre-quent answer (after “I’m required for the class”) is “I just wanted to be entertained.”

I have always had trouble putting much stock in that one. It’s pretty far down on my own list and it never seemed quite a good enough reason. Entertainment? It just never seemed important enough.

But the longer I work in theatre the more I have come to see how valuable a rea-son that one can be, how important it is and how much work is involved in making something as hard as musical theatre look effortless. Perhaps it is one of the best reasons.

This musical isn’t Shakespeare or Chekhov or Sophocles. The plot is very simple and familiar (boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl.) The characters are far from complex, in fact they are all very recognizable types that you’ll find in almost any television sit-com written in the past 25 years. And it isn’t about any monu-mental issue with a message that will be life changing. So, what does it have to offer? Well, it has some wonderful tunes, and some snappy dances, some pretty bad puns and a lot of foolish action … and maybe that is enough. Enough to take your mind off (at least for 90 minutes) any current trouble in the world that might be weighing on you when you entered this building today. Those troubles will still be there when the play is over. For now, leave them behind. And JUST enjoy. -- Michael Wise

After seeing a production of Cole Porter’s Anything Goes in London’s West End, Lady Antonia Fraser (novelist and biographer of Marie

Antoinette) remarked, “You can have Ibsen, Strindberg, Miller, Beckett, even Pinter - just give me Cole Porter.” “I agree” responded

her husband and Nobel Prize winning playwright and poet Harold Pinter.

From the ASTC Board President

As we near the end of our 30 Year Anniversary Season, I want to thank all the members of the ASTC Board of Trustees who gave so much of their time and talents to producing our events this year, from The Rocky Horror Picture Show to Broadway Today and including the 30 Year Anniversary Gala and Theatricals. In this final play-

Las Cruces area. Over the last five years, her students have not only made exceptional treats for at least seven ASTC events, they have also demonstrated their professionalism, poise, and graciousness. It is a sign of Roanna's leadership that, when her students are thanked for their as-sistance, they usually respond with their own appreciation for the opportu-nity to participate. “Being part of the ASTC Board has been very reward-ing,” Roanna has said. “Alma d'arte's catering program has been able to work in partnership with ASTC's fundraising efforts, providing themed menus for each of the Divas events, both Broadway Today performances, and the ASTC 30 Year Anniversary Gala and Theatricals. Not only am I able to enrich my high school students’ catering skills, I am able to help raise money for ASTC which helps to expand NMSU theatre students’ educational experience. It's wonderful to see our efforts result in students being able to travel to competitions and guest artists being brought in to work directly with the students.”

bill of the ASTC Anniversary year, we are revisiting a tradition that began with the founding of the American Southwest Theatre Company in the 1984-85 season: the highlighting of a Board member, in this case intro-ducing you to Roanna St. Clair. If you would like to know more about ASTC and our Board of Trustees, please check our website and do feel free to send me a note. We always welcome new members!
