Award winning airportsIn June 2016, Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas airport won the highly commended airport in the over 25 million passenger category award for its A-CDM implementation and network strategy in particular at the 12th Annual ACI EUROPE Best Airport Awards of the 26th ACI EUROPE General Assembly, Congress & Exhibition, hosted by Athens International Airport.

Additionally, AS Madrid-Barajas won the Euro ANNIES award, granted by anna.aero, for the airport with the biggest net increase (10) in long-haul routes1shared with London Gatwick airport.

Alicante-Elche airport also won the Euro ANNIES award for the biggest net increase in airlines, with 10. The airport has welcomed 11 new airlines this summer, including Aeroflot, Bulgaria Air, KLM, Lufthansa, Norwegian, SWISS and TAROM.1flight of over 4,500 kilometres originating from the European region

Aenas financial and traffic results 1H 2016Total consolidated revenue increased to 1,732.5 million euros (+8.4% compared to 1H 2015).

Aenas EBITDA was 931.7 m (+12.7% over the same period 2015).

Total consolidated net profit increased up to 492.3 m (+78.7% increase over the same period in 2015).

Regarding traffic results Aenas airports reached 103.9 million passengers (+11.7% increase on the same period 2015).

A.S. Madrid-Barajas airport reached 23.6 milion passengers (+8.6%) and Barcelona-El Prat reached 20.4 milion passengers (+12.7%).

Other airports with signficant traffic increases have been:

Vigo 440,497 pax (+41%), Almeria 415,904 pax (+35.3%), Ibiza 2.7 million pax (+17%), Alicante-Elche 5.4 million pax (+16.1%) and Tenerife North with 2m pax (+15.5%).

Short Haul Route: Hannover

Located in the banks of the river Lane, Hannover is the capital of the federal state of Lower Saxony with a population of approximately 520,000 people.

The city is well known for its diverse and attractive leisure options, from the Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen to the Eilenriede city forest, which allow you to connect with nature.

This is a magical city with a long list of major attractions like the new Town Hall, the most representative buidling from the 20th century and the Maschsee lake, with a Mediterranean feeling.

Less that one hour by train from Hannover is the city of Wolfsburgo, famous for being home to the Volkswagen plant. Since the year 2,000 the city houses an amusement park, Autostadt, devoted to cars and mobility.

Hamelin is also worth visiting, the city is only 40 m by train. Thanks to the Grimms fairy tale The Pied Piper of Hamelin, we all have our childhood memories in the history. People of Hamelin, accompanied by singers and actors recreate the story in the church square between May and September on Sundays at 12 am and Wednesdays at 16:30 pm.

Potential Routes

Spain is connected to Hannover from 10 cities (Lanzarote, Barcelona, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Palma de Majorca, La Palma, Tenerife South and Jerez all year round and Ibiza and Menorca only in Summer season). Neverhteless, in 2015 there were more than 117,400

indirect passengers who travelled from Spain to Hannover (1,430,300 from Spain to Germany).

Even though there is a good connectivity with Spain, there are stll some routes with potential.

The main destinations to consider as possible new routes according to the indirect traffic figures and Skyscanner data for 2015 are:

Madrid: 18,500 indirect passengers, 79,000 searches with 7,000 redirections.

Malaga: 20,000 indirect passengers, almost 50,000 searches with 4,100 redirections.

Bilbao: 20,300 indirect passengers, almost 16,300 searches with 1,800 redirections.

Valencia: 7,500 indirect passengers, almost 19,000 searches with 1,600 redirections.

Long Haul Route: Chengdu

General overview

Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan Province, which is known as the The Land of Abundance. Located in the west of Sichuan basin, it is ranked the seventh most populous Chinese city with 18 million residents living in the metropolitan area and 17,7 million in the urban area. Thanks to a powerful economic development in recent years, it is also becoming a modern metropolitan city of well preserved traditions.

Chinas State Council has designated Chengdu as the countrys western center of logistics, commerce, finance, science and technology, as well as a hub of transportation and communication. It is also an important base for manufacturing and agriculture.

Furthermore, it is the natural habitat of cute giant pandas, a Chinese national treasure and one of the rarest animals in the world. Thus, a breeding center for giant pandas called Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding was founded in the north suburbs of the city. It is the only one of its kind in the world thats located in a metropolitan area.

Regarding the gastronomy Chengdu is the first Asian city to win an UNESCO listing as a City of Gastronomy. Its teahouses and tea culture, that emphasize relaxation, are also world-famous.

Potential Routes

Spain has no direct flight connection with Chengdu. However, in 2015 more than 576.000 indirect passengers travelled between Spain and China and Chengdu is ranked 7th in the list of main cities with almost 12,000 indirect passengers travelling to this city in 2015 (+109% increase with respect to 2014).

In addition, more than 38,000 people searched for a possible Spanish connecting route with Chengdu in 2015, according to Skyscanner.

1. Santander peninsula and bay

Santander is without any doubt one of the most elegant and beautiful cities on the northern coast of Spain, and the ideal place to plan a trip. Both the sea and the mountains are continually present in this city, which captivates visitors with its aristocratic atmosphere and its spectacular bay, considered to be one of the most beautiful bays in the world according to the The Most Beautiful Bays in the world club (an UNESCO-endorsed NGO.)

The peninsula given by the city to Alfonso XIII for him to enjoy his leisure summer time is the best known image of Santander, both within and outside of Spain. 2. Old Town - The cathedral

One of the sadest events in the history of Santander, was the fire which burnt the city during two days in 1941. Many buildings were destroyed, and the medieval city centre was lost, loosing a part of the history of the city itself.

Nevertheless the restoration was so successful that it allows us today to enjoy many impressive old buildings like the serene cathedral, placed in a high place that in ancient times was the harbor entrance, and built on the ruins of a preexisting Roman settlement, whose remains are found in the Romanesque chapel of Santsimo Cristo .

This Chapel is the oldest temple in Santander and contains the holy relics of San Emeterio and San Celedonio, Santanders patron saints.

Santander has a wide range of cultural reference centres, emblematic buildings and must-see museums that are a good example of this citys passion for culture.

Some of the most emblematic ones are:

Palace of La Magdalena:

It was built in 1909 to be used as summer residence by Kings Alfonso XIII and Victoria Eugenia. This event turned the city into a summer court and a tourist destination for most of the aristocracy and bourgeoisie .

The Palace was declared Historic-Artistic Monument at a National Level in 1982 and is currently the headquarter of the prestigious Menndez Pelayo International University (UIMP)

The Parque de La Magdalena is also a much-visited public space, where to enjoy numerous actitivites and explore the zoological gardens.

3. Emblematic buildings

The town hall

The building was built in 1907 in a modernist style. Its function is to serve as a meeting place for the mayor and the council in charge of governing the city of Santander.

In the the top center you can see the shield of the city and a bell clock.

The Santander Casino

The Sardineros Grand Casino was built and opened in 1916. However, this beautiful building was not the first to hold the title of the citys casino: before its construction there at that same site stood another two preceding.

In the summer, the Grand Casino is a driving force for social and cultural life. Its facilities, and the decorative interior richness make it one of the most singular casinos in Spain.

Santander has a wide range of cultural reference must-see museums which open their doors thanks to both the public and private sectors. They organise exhibitions of great interest and are a good example of this citys passion for culture. Here are some examples of the most remarkable ones:

Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Santander and Cantabria (MAS)

It was opened in 1908 and known as the Museum of Fine Arts of Santander until 2011. It is a building in neo-Herrerian style that houses a valuable collection of works of art, among which the Flemish, Italian and Spanish paintings from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries and the portrait of Ferdinand VII painted by Goya and donated by the City Hall. stand out. This art centre also has as well as a good collection of contemporary art.

Palacio of Festivales

This palace is an ideal and sumptuous place for all celebrations, it is a symbol of architectural and cultural of the 21th century of Santander.

Menndez Pelayo Library

This vast old library, with its beautiful wood-lined reading room, was built in 1915 to house the 41,500 books bequeathed to Santander by local teacher, philosopher and poet Marcelino Menndez Pelayo (18561912)

Right behind the library stands his family home, the Casa-Museo de Menndez Pelayo, which includes the kitchen that he almost let burn down by being too distracted while reading.

Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art The Cantabrian Maritime Museum

The Cantabrian Maritime Museum

It is a must-see for those who are attracted by the sea and those travelling with children. Located at the Santander Bay, it hosts of over 3,000 square meters of exhibition and is divided into four main sections: Life in the sea, Fishermen and fisheries,The Cantabrian Sea and the sea throughout history and Avant-garde technology in front of the sea.

The Museum of Prehistory and Archaeology of Cantabria

Exhibition of more than 1,200 pieces with dates ranging from the Upper Palaeolithic to the Middle Ages. They come from some of the most important archaeological sites in the study of the Palaeolithic portable art, such as Altamira and Puente Viesgo. The museum also has a bibliographic collection of 70,000 volumes.

A true highlight of the exceptionally El Sardinero district, this is the perfect place to come and relax beneath a tamarind tree.

In addition, there is a viewpoint from which the whole Sardinero can be admired and whose balustrade has undulating forms imitating the sea waves.

Parque de Cabo Mayor

Just a stones throw from the popular El Sardinero beaches, the Parque de Cabo Mayor is one not to miss and stands alongside the seafront and atop the cliffs. Tourists often come here to check out the panoramas from the top of the parks Cabo Mayor lighthouse. and look at the beauty of the maritime scenery of Santander. To the right of the viewpoint there is a door with stairs to descend to the cape and walk up to its end.

5. Parks and gardens

Santander is a city which stands out especially for its full contact with nature. A very green city with lush parklands contrasting greatly with its sandy beaches. These are some of the most outstanding ones:

Pereda gardens

Perhaps the most famous of all the citys landscaped gardens.The Pereda garden is home to a number of important attractions, such as the music pavilion, the giant carrousel and the monument to the local 19th-century Spanish novelist, Jos Maria de Pereda, as well as being filled with seasonal flowers and several fountains.

6. Beaches and sports

Santander can feel proud of having more than a dozen sandy beaches. Some of them have been awarded the European Union Blue Flag.

Santander is also rich in Verdes-areas and beaches and has managed to develop whilerespecting its natural setting, spaces for recreation and sport: sailing, rowing, kitesurf, surfing and scuba diving; golf, hiking, mountain biking or even climbing are sports practiced assiduously without leaving the city.

Santander is located between the sea and the mountains and has a mixture of both in its gastronomy.

Fish and seafood in this place enjoy a well-earned reputation for their quality and freshness, and these dishes predominate in the menu of many restaurants.Good food is reason enough to visit this city which, on the other hand, has great attractions apart from its gastronomy. The offer is so plural that it can be adapted to all kinds of pockets: from fish taverns and cheap bars with dishes, daily menus and tapas at popular prices to smart restaurants with the most exclusive menus. In any case, the product, if it is local, will be of good quality.

Typical dishes from the sea are rabas (fried squid), bocartes rebozados (whitebait) and fresh shellfish. There are also excellent meat dishes such as cocido montas (a stew made of beans, meat and cabbage) and traditional desserts like quesada (cheesecake), sobaos pasiegos (sponge cakes) and corbatas (puff pastry cakes).

Behind the city hall, in the western part of central Santander, youll find the 19th-century cast-iron Mercado La Esperanza, a coloufulmarket with masses of fish and seafood, meat, cheese, fruit and orujo (firewater) from Potes (in the Picos de Europa).

Business and tourism looking for access to a European City

Navarre, opportunities for new routes

Pamplona, the capital city of the Navarre Region, gives its name to its Regional Airport. Located in the North of Spain, this Region offers a real business opportunity to airlines ready to operate a new connection to a European City, which would also be the first regular international route of the Airport. Regional Authorities have recently launched a passenger potential demand analysis for different European destinations to assess their feasibility and initial results are proving very promising in all scenarios.

Several reasons are behind it. Navarre economic structure generates and important business demand currently underserved from Pamplona Airport. In addition, its population has a strong purchase power (3rd highest in Spain) and values travelling for leisure and VFR. Also, the connection to a European City will open immense opportunities for inbound tourist traffic, whose inflow would be enhanced by targeted marketing activities from both Aena and Navarre Tourism Board. Finally, the Airports high quality infrastructure is ready to accommodate such a new operation. Its new terminal from 2010, has the capacity to host 1M passengers per year, more than 5 times the existing traffic, and the airport offers extended operating hours from 6.30 to 23:45 local time. Adding to it, a new route will benefit from Aenas incentive scheme.

From July 6th to 14th every year the word fiesta is written in capital letters in Pamplona. The Sanfermines. Thousands of people from all over the world descend on the city, who dress up in red and white. For nine days the streets turn into a feast of friendship, joy, music and non-stop partying. The Encierro (Bull Run) is one of its best known activities, when the bulls start their race behind the mozos (young men) that culminates in the bullring at the end of the run.

Short operations are put in place to bring visitors from Barcelona to the city these days. Additional opportunities have been identified, particularly with London Airports, for moving both inbound foreign visitors and outbound local tourists. Local travel agencies and tour-operators are interested in exploring options further.

The Pilgrims Way to Santiago is a social, cultural and religious phenomenon that emerged in the Middle Ages, when Knights Templar, monarchs, nobles, paupers and devotees from all over Christianity travelled thousands of miles to kneel in front of the tomb of the Apostle Santiago (St. James). In the 21st century the Pilgrims Way has been certified as a Great European Cultural Itinerary and awarded the Spanish Prince of Asturias Prize for Promoting Understanding, which have enhanced the number of tourists every year; more than 150,000 people now cross the peninsula on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. Despite the differences on pilgrims motivations, they all have in common the need to leave daily life behind and give themselves time and space to reflect on things.

Navarre is the Spanish gate to the French Route of the Pilgrims Way, the one with the greatest historical tradition, the best-known internationally and the most travelled. Last year, more than 45.000 foreign pilgrims passed by the Collegiate church of Roncesvalles, the first stop in the Navarre Pyrenees, and the trend is upwards.

Navarre is one of the very few places in Europe that has been able to preserve a gastronomic tradition that makes eating a social event. Every festivity or tradition is accompanied by a particular cuisine, and so the traveler will find the table always well stocked with appetizing and varied food.

Popular cuisine, of rural origin and homemade tradition, is based on all the products that the varied landscape of Navarre provides.

The regions restaurants have gone one-step further, winning international prestige thanks to the quality of the raw materials they use for their dishes. Chefs from Navarre are among the most prestigious in the world of Nouvelle Cuisine. From its market gardens come asparagus, artichokes, red Piquillo peppers or pochas (succulent white beans) as starters. For the second course, T-bone steaks, roast meats, fish and ajoarriero (salted cod in a sauce with peppers and oil), and for dessert, cheese, junket, canutillos (wafers with cream), homemade custard or leche frita (literally, fried milk). Let yourself be seduced! Navarrese cuisine has an excellent ally in its red, ros and white wines. Covered by the Navarra and Rioja Designations of Origin, the regions wines have gained recognition on an international scale.

Get out and let yourself be tempted by the natural treasures hidden in our region. From the photogenic scenery of the Pyrenees and the enormous Irati forest to the untamed desert of Bardenas Reales, and steep-sided gorges and delightful valleys are just some options.

Additionally Navarre is home to a great number of festivities throughout the year, from the Carnivals at Lantz, Ituren o Zubieta in the north to Easter festivals in the south. Processions, celebrations with bulls and sports based on rural activities fill the parks, streets and squares.
