OUTREACH AND
OTHER PROJECTS
The Big Swing runs an outreach
programme. Each day we deliver play
sessions at various locations across the
district . Please get in contact with us
for more information on this.
The Big Swing also offers private group
and school bookings . We offer bespoke
play and alternative learning sessions
tailored to your groups needs. Sessions
can be based at the Big Swing or at a
group setting. We offer a variety of
activities all of which are of an outdoor
adventurous nature.
THE PLAYGROUND
The Playground is situated in an area with
high levels of deprivation and as such many
of the children who attend the sessions have
little or no other play opportunities they can
access.
The playground provides a place where
children and young people can play
together in a supervised environment,
where they are free to express themselves
and feel a real sense of ownership.
The playground offers children the chance to
engage in pro-social activities but with an
element of challenge, such as using tools to
construct dens, go karts and other structures
and learn how to make camp fires in our
outdoor kitchen.
About the Big Swing
Eccleshill Adventure Playground,
known locally as the Big Swing is a
free of charge ‘open access’ play
setting for children and young people.
Set up in 2005 the playground
provides year round fully inclusive
play provision. It is staffed by a team
of qualified and experienced
playworkers who work with the
children to create fantastic play
opportunities.
The playground is modelled on the
traditional ‘junk play’ ethos where by
the children are encouraged to use a
range of materials to create and
shape the play space. In addition
there is a large A-frame style swing,
zip-wire, sunken trampoline, tree
houses and wooden fort.
