Christine’shomebakerycouldnotkeepupwith
customers’orders.Christinerecalled,“IaskedMomand
Dadtohelpmefindanewlocationforthebakery.The
newlocationtheyfoundinAccidentwasthesiteof
formerbakeries.TheAccidentlocationalsoenabled
thenumberofofferingstoexpandbeyondwhat
weofferedatthehomekitchen.”

Cakesarenottheonlyscratch-baked
itemsofferedatMountainFlourBaking
Company.AccordingtoChristine,artisanbreadhas
becomeanincreasinglypopularitemthathascreated
loyalcustomers.Asthenamesuggests,artisanbread
(alsoreferredtoasartisanalbread)isnotmassproduced
onanassemblyline.Instead,theloaves
arecraftedandbakedinsmallbatches.
Feweringredients(nochemicals)anda
returntothetraditionalbread-making
processalsosettheloavesapart.Cheese,
sundriedtomatoes,andoliveoilarejust
afewoftheflavorsthatmaybeaddedto
artisandough.Butthekeyingredientin
thetraditionalprocessisthecraftsperson
thatcarefullyblendstheingredients
tomaketheuniqueloaves.Christine
commented,“Someofourcustomerswill

themtoproduceit.”

Little Maryland“I’ve been working on the railroad, all the live long day,I’ve been working on the railroad, just to pass the time away.”
EveryoneknowsthelyricstothenineteenthcenturyAmericanfolksong,butveryfewcansaytheyhaveactuallyworkedonarailroadjustforfun.AWesternMarylandfamilyistheexceptiontotherulebecauseoneoftheirownnotonlyworkedonanineteenthcenturyrailroadbutalsoactuallydesignedandmanufacturedone.StephenLafayettePagenhardt,agifted16yearoldfromWesternport,Mary-land,builtanoperatingscalemodelsteamenginethatwasfeaturedattheChicagoWorld’sFairin1893.
ThescalemodelwasbasedonaCumberland&PennsylvaniaRailroadlocomotivethatwasprobablyfamiliartotheyoungPagenhardtbecausetheC&P,anAlleganyCounty,Maryland,shortlinerailroad,operatedapassengerandfreightstationinnearbyPiedmont,WestVirginia.TheC&Plocomotiveheselectedtomodel,dubbedtheMaryland,wasoriginallybuiltin1865atNorris,Pennsylvania,andlaterrebuiltin1898and1902attheMountSavage,Maryland,C&Pshops.
StephenPagenhardt’ssteamlocomotivetookthreeyearstodesignandbuild,andaccordingtoareportpub-lishedin1892wascreatedasahobby.Thescalemodel’sdesignwasbasedontheC&Pprototype’s4-4-0wheelarrangementandbuilttooperateona7-1/4inchscaletrack.Intricatemachineworkandengineeringskillswererequiredtomanufacturethelocomotive’smanymovingpartsand23one-halfinchtubes.Twobrasscylinders

Aftertheengine’scompletion,castirontrackandtieswereinstalledbehindthePagenhardts’gunsmithshopinWesternportsothatitcouldbeoperatedandenjoyed.Thelocomotivewasaccompaniedbyseveralcustombuiltcarsthataccommodatedpassengers,therebymakingitthefirstoperatingmodelsteamlocomotiveinWesternMaryland.Butthecrowningachievementfortheyoungengineerwasatriptothe1893ChicagoWorld’sFairwhereLittle MarylandproudlyrepresentedWesternMary-landandthePagenhardtfamily.
Reportsindicatethatsometimeafter1910Little MarylandceasedtooperateandwasmovedtoashowcaseatHammondStreetSchoolinWesternport.Afireattheschoolnearlydestroyedthelocomotiveafteritfellfromastairlandingtothefloorbelow.Theblazemeltedthetender(exceptforthetrucksand
afewotherpieces),andtheenginewasmadeinoperable.Thereisnorecordofwhathappenedtothepassengercars.
AcoalshedhostedtheengineforanumberofyearsbeforeStephen’sson,RichardPagenhardt,undertookthejobofcleaningandmakingminorrepairssoitcouldbedisplayedathislawofficeindowntownOakland.Ironically,RichardPagenhardt’sofficewaslocatedimmediatelyadjacenttothecurrenthomeofLittle MarylandattheGarrettCountyHistoricalMuseum.
WhileLittleMarylandremainedasourceofprideforthePagenhardtfamily,thefirehadobviouslytakenatoll.MontyPagenhardt,sonofRichardandgrandsonofStephen,remembered,“Myfatherdecidedtohaveitrestored,soheandMr.RichardArnoldmettolookattheengineanddiscusswhatitneeded.Mr.Arnoldagreedtocompletetherestoration.”

AlleganyCountyresidentandmastermachinistRichard“Dick”Arnoldhadextensiveexperienceinbuildingandrepairinglivesteamlocomotives,includingonesathisresidence.Heinitiallyconcludedthattherestoration“wouldtakemeandmyfatherfourtosixmonthstocomplete.Problemsweencounteredincludedbentreardriversandaxles,frozencylinders,andmissingparts.Anewheadlightandsmokestackhadtobemadeandtheringrivetsaroundtheboilerneededrepairssothatitwouldholdsteam.”
Mr.Arnolddiscoveredthescalemodelsufferedfromthesamedeficienciesasthe4-4-0prototype,therebymakingitanamazinglyaccuraterepresentation.Inbothcases,thecylindersweretoolargefortheamountofsteamthatcouldbesupplied.AccordingtoDickArnold,“Thatwasacommonprobleminthe4-4-0s;therewastoomuchcylinderandtoolittlesteam.Thefireboxcouldn’theatthewaterfastenoughtokeeptheenginegoing.Sometimestheengineerwouldhavetowaituntilthesteambuiltupbeforehecouldcontinuetherun.”
AdisplaytenderwasbuiltasareplacementfortheoriginalonedestroyedatHammondStreetSchool.A
woodenframecoveredwithcoppersheathingformedthebasictenderoutline.Rivetholesweredrilledthroughthecopperintothewoodenframewherepinswereinsertedtosimulaterivets.Agalvanizedmetaltankwasinsertedinthewoodenframetoholdthewatersupply.Theoriginaltrucksweremountedtoacustombuiltmetalframe,therebycompletingtheproject.
Asworkontheprojectprogressed,Mr.ArnoldcametounderstandthattheskillsrequiredtobuildLittle Marylandwouldhavechallengedamastermachinist,buttorealize

grew.Whileothercompany’smanufactured
similartires,itwasKelly’scompanythat
wentontoachieveworldwidenotorietyin
themanufactureofautomobiletires.
TheKelly-SpringfieldTireCompany
benefittedfromtheboomingautomobile
industryoftheearlytwentiethcentury.
Carriagewheelsbecamequaintmemories
aspneumatictiressupportedthenewmode
oftransportation.TheKellyfactoryinAkron,Ohio,was
sellingtiresasfastastheycouldbeproduced,soadecision
wasmadetolookforanadditionallocationtobuildanew
manufacturingfacility.Kelly-Springfield’stwoprofessional
teamsresearchedandreportedon53citiesthatcompeted
forthenewfactory.FortunatelyforAlleganyCounty
residents,noneoftheoriginal53citieswasawardedthe
contracttobuildanewplant;instead,Cumberland,
Maryland,walkedawaywiththegrandprizeinSeptember
1916whenanagreementwasreachedbetweenthetire
companyandthecity.Howthecitycametowintheprize
isbothinterestingandunusual.
PhillipBlake,secretaryoftheCumberlandDevelop-
mentCompany(forerunneroftheChamberofCommerce)
wassaidtohaveoverheardaconversationbetweentwo
passengersonaBaltimoreandOhiopassengertrain.The
passengers’conversationreferencedatirecompany’ssearch
foralocationtobuildanewplant.Uponreturnto
Cumberland,Blakewrotetoseveraltirecompanies
inhopesthatonewouldbethecompany
referredtointhetrainconversation.

Kelly-SpringfieldTireCompany.
ThecityofCumberlandtoutedits
advantagestothetirecompany:astable
watersupply,railservice,abundantfuelsupplies,
amotivatedlaborforce,andproximitytomajor
markets.Cumberlandwasalsotheonlycityto
offerthetirecompany$750,000incash—an
enormoussumofmoneyin1916andenough
toclosethedeal.Thecashwasraisedthrough
acommunityfundraisingdrive.
In1917,CumberlandMayorThomas
KoonandKelly-Springfieldofficialsbroke
groundforthenewfactoryontheWestSide
ofCumberlandandthefirsttirewassubse-
quentlyproducedin1920.Thecompany
andAlleganyCountyprosperedasthelocally
producedtiresgainedglobalmarketshare.Infact,
Kelly-Springfieldgrewtobecomeoneofthelargesttire
manufacturersintheworld.Whenthecorporateoffices
alsolocatedinAlleganyCounty,Cumberlandproudly
proclaimedthatitwashometotheWorldwideHeadquarters

UnfortunatelyforAlleganyCounty,theKelly-Springfield
planthadbecomeoutdatedbythe1980s.Modernplants
provedtobemoreefficientandcapableofproducingthe
increasinglypopularandtechnologicallyadvancedradialtire.
Acorporatedecisionwasmadetoclosethelocalplant
andthelasttirerolledofftheassemblylineMay14,1987,

cabincametobelocatedatRiversidePark,however,isa

markerlocatedatProspectSquareonWashingtonStreet
informsvisitorsthatGeorgeWashington’sHeadquarters
andFortCumberland,structuresbuiltin1755aspart
ofGreatBritain’smilitarybuildupduringtheFrenchand
IndianWar(1754-1763),werelocatednearby.Although
GeorgeWashingtonhadpreviouslybeenclosetoCumber-
landin1748asasurveyorandinCumberlandduring
1753and1754asaLieutenantColonelfromVirginia,it
wasnotuntil1755thatGeneralEdwardBraddock’smen
erectedthecabinandfortcomplexoverlookingWill’s
Creekthatassociatedthemanwiththelogcabinhead-
quarters.Thebuildingwouldhaveprobablybeensituated
onalotadjoiningthepresentdayhistoricalmarkerand
occupiedbyWashingtonin1755,1758,and1794.
TheboundariesofFortCumberlandhavebeendocu-
mentedbyhistorians,butWashington’sHeadquarters
doesnotappearintimeperiodmapsormanuscripts.The
mostauthoritativesourcereferencingthecabin’sexistence
andlocationappearedinWillH.Lowdermilk’sHistoryof

LowdermilknotedthatoneofthemostvenerablewasknownasWashington’s
Headquarterswhich“occupiedthegroundonwhichMr.O.C.Gephart’sresidence
nowstands,andwhichiswellrememberedbyhundredsofcitizens,asitwasnot
removeduntilabouttheyear1844.ItwascontemporarywithFortCumberlandand
stoodbutashortdistancefromtheparadeground.”Subsequentreportsofthe
cabin’sexistenceandlocationwerecorroboratedbyseverallongtime
residents.
Mr.Lowdermilknotedtheoriginalcabinwasmodifiedover
theyearstobecomeaoneandahalf-storydwelling.Theloton
whichthecabinsetwaspurchasedbyJudgeThomasPerryin
1844forthepurposeofbuildingaresidence,soplansweremade
tomovethehistoricstructure.JudgePerryappreciatedthe
building’ssignificanceand,accordingtoLowdermilk,soldit
tohisfriend,GeorgeBlocher.Mr.Blocherdisassembledthe
buildingandmovedittoafarmonBedfordRoad,adistance
ofaboutonemile.Lowdermilknotedthebuildingwas
subsequentlyrepairedandoccupiedbyJohnBaker.Repairs
includedweatherboardingandtheadditionofaslateroof.
ThebuildingremainedonBedfordRoaduntilpurchased
bylocalhistorianJamesWalterThomas.Mr.Thomas
reportedlysoughttopurchaseandrestorethecabinsoitcould
bereturnedtoalocationnearthesiteofFortCumberland.
Restorationwassubsequentlyplacedinthehandsofcontractor
WilliamJ.MorleywhorebuiltasimilarstructureatValleyForge,
Pennsylvania.
AccordingtoaCumberland Evening Timesreportpublishedin
April1921,therestorationrequiredthattheoriginalsills,plates,
andjoistsoftheoldbuildingbere-laidtoaccuratelydetermine
thecabin’sdimensions.Replacingtheraftersprovidedthepitch
andshapeoftheroof.Thereportstated,“Theentiregroundwork

Mr.A.K.Hummelshime,Police
andFireCommissioner,wrote
asarcasticletterattempting
todiscredittheclaimthatthe
logcabinwasusedbyGeorge
Washington.Hefurtherstated
thatthelogsusedinthebuild-
ingwerecollectedfromvarious
locationsoveraperiodof150
yearsandwerebeingassembledin1921forthefirsttime
asGeorgeWashington’sHeadquarters.
CommissionerHummelshime’scommunicationwas
challengedbyMayorKoonattheMarch14,1921,city
councilmeeting.Whenpressedonthechargesagainstthe
cabin,Mr.Hummelshimedidnot
offerspecificfactsandadmittedthe
letterwasbasedonhearsay.City
officialscitedMr.Lowdermilk’s
workandrelatedtestimoniesabout
thecabinbeforemakingtheunusual
movesofrefusingtoacceptthe
letterandofstrikingCommissioner
Hummelshime’sremarksfromthe
officialminutes.
Apparently,bothcityofficials
andMr.Lowdermilkwereunaware
ofanothersourceofinformation
thatofferedsomesupportastothe
cabin’sauthenticity.TheApril1857
issueofHarper’s Weeklypublished
anarticlebyBrantzMayertitled
“WithSomeWanderingsinthe
FootstepsofWashington,Brad-
dock,andtheEarlyPioneers.”
Inrecountinghistravelsthrough
WesternMaryland,theauthor
notedthat“theweather-beaten
hovelwhichWashingtonoccupied
ashisquartersmorethana
hundredyearsago,stillstood
behindthefortinthericketyrain
delineatedbyourartist;buthas
beenremovedtomakewayfora
moderndwelling.”Theartist’s
renderingdepictsaoneanda
half-storydwellingwithaSwiss
cabinattached;thisrendering
isinkeepingwithLowdermilk’s
account.

tocreatetheappropriatesettingforWashington’sservice
inCumberland.
GeorgeWashington’sHeadquartershasbeenlistedin
theMarylandInventoryofHistoricProperties(AL-IV-047)
since1975.Theinventorydoesnotevaluatethehistorical
significanceofpropertiesorconferanyprotectionor
benefits;ratherithighlightsthemforreferencepurposes
only.TheheadquartershasnotbeenlistedintheNational
Registrybecauseitdoesnotmeetthestrictcriteriarequired
bytheNationalParkService.Thecabinwasmovedatleast
twice,thusmakingitineligible.Thefirstmovewasespecially
troublesomesincedetailedrecordsofitsdisassemblydo
notexist.DespitethefailuretobeplacedintheNational

KayakshavealonghistoryinNorthAmerica.Devel-opedthousandsofyearsagobyArctictribessuchastheEskimos,Inuits,andAleuts,thevesselswereprimarilyusedforhuntingseaanimalsandtransportinggoods.Infact,thetermkayakmeans“hunter’sboat.”Theindigenouspeoples’designwaslateradoptedbywesternEuro-peanswhodesiredtobuildkayaksforrecreationalpurposes.Cumber-landresidentMikeCalhoun’srecentquesttobuildakayakbridgedboththeindigenousandEuropeantraditionsbecausehewantedtocombinecraftsmanshipwiththerecreationalaspectsofkayakingonlocallakes.
Mike’sdesiretobuildakayakstartedseveralyearsagowhenhereadamagazinearticleaboutkayakbuilding.AsMikerecalled,“Afterreadingthearticle,IstarteddoingalittleresearchonhowtobuildoneandfinallysettledontheGuillemotmodel.”
TheGuillemotwasnamedafteraseabirdandwasdesignedbykayakenthusiastandentrepreneurNickSchadewhospecializesinhighperformanceseavessels.Mr.Schade’sbackgroundasacivilengineerwiththeUnitedStatesNavyandon-the-waterexperienceenabledhimtoauthor,TheStrip-BuiltSeaKayak,ahandyreferencebookforcraftsmeninterestedinbuildingtheirownboats.NickSchade’suniqueapproachtokayak
Guillemot? buildinginvolvedthestrip-builtmethodofmoldingandfasteningsmallwoodenstripstothevessel’sframe.ThetechniquewaswellknowntocanoebuildersbutuntestedwithkayaksuntilSchade’sdesignbecameavailable.
ResearchcompletedandSchade’sbookinhand,Mikebegantheprocessofacquiringwoodandothermaterialsfortheproject.RedCedar,Redwood,SpanishCedar,andAshwerethewoodsofchoice.“Istartedwithrawwoodandthencutitdowntoone-quarterinchbythree-quarterinchstrips.Forpatternsandothersupplies,IcontactedChesapeakeLightCraftfromAnnapolis,Maryland,
acompanythatspecializesinboatkits.”
Thebuildingprocessrequiredskillandpatience.“Istapledthefirststriptotheformsthatwerecutfromapattern.Next,Iedge-gluedthesecondstriptothefirstoneandstapleditinplaceuntilitdried.ThenIalternatedbackandforthuntilbothsidesofthehullwerecompleted.Theboatwasflippedoverandthedeckwasbuiltthesameway.Afterthedeckandhullwerefinished,Iplanedandsandedtheinsideandoutsideuntilthesurfacesweresmooth.Whenthewoodwassmooth,acoatingofepoxyresinwasapplied.Afterwaiting24hours,thepartswerecoveredwithfiberglassclothandwettedoutwithepoxyresin.”Afterbothinsideandoutsideofthehullwerecoatedwithfiberglass,thehullanddeckwerefastenedtogetherwithfiberglasstape.Cuttingthehatchesandcockpitcompletedthewoodworkingpartoftheenterprise.Mikeestimatedthat20monthsand400to500hoursoftimewererequiredtocompletethecraftthatmeasured17feetinlengthandweighed50pounds.

In1984Dutch’sDaughterRestaurantopenedits
doorsinaVFWbuildinginFrederick,Maryland.Since
thattime,Dutch’shasconsistentlyservedawardwinning
diningexperiencesinacomfortableatmosphere.TheDutch’s
diningexperiencewasenhancedin2000whenanelegant
threestorydiningfacilityopenedinaresidentialsection
ofFrederick.Thenewlocationmeantthatadditional
servicesandexpandedmenuscouldbeofferedtoguests.
NowtheDutch’sdiningexperiencehasexpandedonce
againwiththeopeningofDutch’satSilverTree.Thenew
restaurantoccupiestheeaterysectionoftheformerSilver
TreeInnatDeepCreekLake.
ThenewDutch’satSilverTreeislocatedinahistoric
andfamiliarlocationtoDeepCreekLakevacationers.The
originalbuildingonthesitewasreferredtoasNemacolin
Lodgeandconstructedinthelate1930sthroughthe
effortsofDr.ThomasBennett.Thelogstylelodgefeatured
threemassivestonefireplacesandtoweringwallsbuilt
withtimbercutontheproperty.Thelodgenamewas
derivedfromaDelawareChiefwhospentaconsiderable
amountoftimeinWesternMarylandduringthemid
eighteenthcentury.Sincethe1970s,theoriginallodge
underwentextensiverenovationsandadditionsand
becameassociatedwithupscalelodgingandfinedining.
OwnerEileenGideonhaslookedforwardtoexpanding
herbusinesstoGarrettCountyforsometime.“Myfather,
Fred“Dutch”Onderdonk,spentmanyyearssupportingmy
familyworkingontheHamiltonFarmtendingtoproduce.
Myfatheralwaystoldmethathewantedtoreturnto
Oaklandbecausehemissedthemountains,weather,and
people,”recalledEileen.WhileDutchhaspassed,Eileen
believesthathewouldbeproudtoseetheexpansionthat
recentlyoccurred.
EileenisfamiliarwithGarrettCounty,Nemacolin’s
story,andDeepCreekLakesinceherhomewasoriginally
innearbyOakland.“Iamreallylookingforwardtoserving
GarrettCountywhereIwasborn.”
ThemovetoGarrettCountywasfacilitatedbyPhiland
ErikaRauh,ownersoftheSilverTreebuildingandlongtime
friendswhoinformedEileenoftheopportunityavailable
attheirfacility.“PhilandErikahavebeenwonderfulto
workwithandhavebeeninstrumentalinmakingasmooth
expansiontoDeepCreekLake,”statedEileen.

Sunshine,originallyfromKentucky,
wasenrolledinthecreativewriting
program,andservedasConcert-
masteroftheSDSUSymphony
Orchestra.Music,intheformofthe
orchestra,broughtthemtogether.
AseasonspentatSunshine’s
father’sfarminKentuckywasan
eye-openerforSteve.“Itwasmy
firsttasteofruralliving,”hesays.
“Idevelopedaninterestinamore
sustainablelifestyle.”Oneparticular
aspectofrurallifethatintrigued
Stevewastheuseofhorsesforlogging
andfarmwork.Thatinterestled
himtoBackboneFoodFarm,near
Oakland,Md.,whereaseason’s
apprenticeshipconvincedhimthat
hewasafarmeratheart.
“Wefellinlovewiththearea,”
Stevesays.Sothesearchbeganfor
afarmoftheirown.Eventually
theyfound41acresinCranesville
through“afriendofafriendofa
friend.”Afterconvincingtheseller
thatthey’dcarefortheland,they
boughttheproperty—ahayfield
withnohouse—inlate2006.
“Wewerelucky,”Stevesays.
“Weloveitouthere.”Thecouple
boughtaschoolbus,rippedout
theseats,renovatedtheinsideand
movedin.In2008,theybuilta
smallhouse.Itsporchservedasa
vegetablepackingshedforacouple
years.Theyfinallywereabletobuild
arealpackingshedlastsummer
andtherenovatedporchbecamea
welcomeadditiontotheirone-room
house.“Wechosetobuildasmall
house,tohaveasmallerecological
footprint.”Theysharethehouse
withtheirtwochildren–Xavier
is6andIsisis3.Botharehome-
schooled.
TheybegantheirCSAwith20
membersandsoldproduceatthe
MorgantownFarmersMarket.It
didn’ttakelongforSunshineand
Stevetorealizetheyhadtogrowtheir
farmquicklytosucceed.Fiveyears
later,theCSAisfilledtocapacityat
150membersandhasawaitinglist.

Asanuncertifiedorganicfarm,RoundRightFarmgrowsproducewithoutsyntheticorchemicalpesticides,herbicidesorfertilizers.Seedsusedarenotgeneticallymodi-fiedorchemicallytreated.Anymanureusedtofertilizethesoilisfreeofantibioticsorsynthetichormones.

“Wehavebeenquitesurprised,”Stevesaysofthefarm’ssuccess.“Wefeelreallyblessed.We’regettingreadytoscrapthebus.It’ssortofthelastvestigeofwhenwewerecampingout,”hesays,withahintofnostalgia.
