“What is Christmas?”Christmas Day, December 25, is
probably the most popular holiday
in Great Britain. It is a family holiday.
Traditionally all relatives and friends
give each other presents. They
decorate their houses in the
traditional way that is the Christmas
trees are set up in houses, in the
streets and churches. The Christmas
trees are always decorated with fairy
lights, angels and small toys. In
addition little packets with nuts,
candies and special biscuits are hung
on the tree. Presents are put under
the Christmas tree.
Christmas EveOn the eve of the Christmas
children hang their
stockings so that Santa
Claus could put presents
into them : oranges, sweets,
nuts and if the child didn't
behave properly Santa
Clause can put there a piece
of coal as punishment.
“Santa Claus”Santa Claus got his name
from a man known as St.Nickolas who lived in
Asia in the fourth century. He gave his
wealth to the poor and often to children. After
he died the Dutch brought this legend to colonial America. Soon
the Dutch name became Santa Claus.
“A Christmas Carol”Carol singing is an essential part of
Christmas. Carols may be traditional or
by known composers they can express
different feelings. Usually children come
around in the evening to the front doors
and start singing carols and the people
living in these houses give children
candies, nuts, pies and so on, to thank
them for carol singing. Today we shall
present such famous Christmas carols
as “Ring the bells”, “We wish you a
merry Christmas” and others.
“Christmas Lunch”A typical Christmas lunch
includes turkey with cranberry sauce and
pudding. Every young woman in each house cook a special Christmas dinner. Usually a coin or two are hidden inside the pudding and part of the fun is to
see who finds it. After the lunch they go to the sitting
room to listen to the Christmas speech of the Queen, shown on TV or sing Christmas carols.
History of Christmas FestivalChristmas is the main public holiday in Britain.
This Christian Holy day is held on the 25th of December in
honor of the birth of Jesus Christ.
People usually spend time with their families. They
often see it as a time of merry-making and present –
giving, wishing each other a merry Christmas and
happy new year. On Christmas Eve some people go to a
special church service called Midnight Mass at 12
o’clock at night.
Christmas TreePeople put presents under Christmas
trees decorated with coloured balls,
fairy lights, tinsel and baubles. The
Christmas Tree became popular in
England in 1841 when Queen Victoria's
husband Prince Albert brought a
Christmas tree from his native Germany
and put it Windsor Castle . Every year
people of Norway send a Christmas Tree
to London. It stands in Trafalgar Square,
in front of the National Gallery and is
beautifully decorated.
Christmas dinnerThe traditional meal consists
of turkey served with potatoes and vegetables. This is usually followed by Christmas pudding.
If the pudding is made at home, Some people like to hide
a coin in the Christmas pudding and make a wish, whoever gets the piece of pudding with the coin in on Christmas day is especially
lucky and their "pudding wish" will come true! Other
traditional food include mince pies and Christmas cake.
Christmas CardsChristmas Cards are a part
of Christmas celebrations.
The tradition of sending
Christmas cards appeared
in 1846. People send them
to congratulate their
relatives and friends.
Santa Claus is coming to town (Frank Sinatra)
Oh! You'd better watch out, You'd better not cry, You'd better not pout I'm telling you why, Santa Claus is coming to town! He's making a list, Checking it twice, Gonna find out who's naughty or nice, Santa Claus is coming to town!He sees you when you're sleeping, He knows when you are awake. He knows if you've been bad or good, So be good for goodness sake!Oh! You'd better watch out, You'd better not cry, You'd better not pout I'm telling you why, Santa Claus is coming to town!
SnowmanI’m a little snowman, white and fat. Here is my pipe and here is my hat. I have got buttons: one, two, three Will you count them with me?Don’t throw the snowballs at my hat, If you do, I will turn around, And pick some snow up from the ground, Make a ball or may be two And then throw snowballs back at you!
