Train Ride Home$4.50 for the train, $55 for the cab, meeting potential Jaycees Pr iceless. What a week, it started out with a 25 + hour train trip to Chicago to attend theJaycees National Convention and then my 1st National Senate Convention. The

Jaycee and Senate Conventions were great, the Illinois Jaycees definitely know hos-pitality, and I met a lot of great people but that isn’t what this story is about…I had to leave the convention the night of the Senate banquet, so I packed mythings and caught the hotel shuttle to the Lisle train station on my way to Union

Station to head back to NY. I spent a few extra minutes speaking with the shuttledriver who inquired about the group staying at their hotel. I explained about theJaycees and the Senators and thanks to Patricia (PIE) from South Carolina I had aJaycee application on me. I wrote my name on it and told her to speak to the Sena-tors to find a local chapter.

TRAVEL TIP: Make sure when you’re looking at a train schedules remember tocheck if it is AM or PM. The train I expected to take was 12 hours earlier in theday, and the next train would get me to Union Station 10 Minutes after my trainleft. My train leaving Albany was 4 hours late to arrive; of course this train was

right on time, so what do I do?I decided to take a cab, as the other options of getting stranded in Chicago or pay-ing for another hotel night weren’t ideal. Two college kids carrying strange boxmasks approached the cab, when they mistakenly heard the train is late. I asked,

“are you from LMFAO,” (this is a current music group for those of you who aren’tas hip as I am, it stands for Laughing My F’ing A$$ Off). They responded, “nothey weren’t LMFAO, but they were using them for an LMFAO promotion. Howdid you know that?” I told them “I actually saw them in concert a couple weeksago. Did they need a ride to the station?” They were stunned that I knew the group

and we shared a cab to Union Station and talked about college, their goals and thereason I was in Chicago, the Jaycees and the JCI Senate. I shared about the Jayceesand the opportunities they have given me over the past decade, the fact the Jayceesraised $21,000 dollars this weekend for Joplin, MO. They were interested in the

Jaycees, especially when I told them women are members too. At the end of thetrip I told them I’d cover all the cab fare, they just needed to check out thewww.usjaycees.org website. Once again, thanks Patricia, I had another Jayceeapplication in my wallet. I wrote the Jaycee website on it, my name and gave thema business card. These 2 college kids are from Chicago and go to college in Texas.

They are young, ambitious and now also have a story to share with their friendsabout meeting a Jaycee at a train station. I hope you were able to pass along theJaycee Passion on your travels home from a wonderful Senate meeting.David Stern Senator 68349

PAST PRESIDENT'S NOTE-BOOK

Hello again! First may I state that in mylast newsletter article, that on March 4th,

that I had a luncheon visit from three mem-bers of the Durham Region JCI SenateClub. Those Canadian JCI Senators whoattended were 1999-2000 Canada JCI Presi-

dent Bill Skribe #25511 (Oshawa, Ontario),Joe Hogan #20280 (Oshawa, Ontario) andSteven Galpin #21593 (Brooklin, Ontario).

While here they did take a few pictures,

in which they later posted on line over theinternet. Well due to my surprise on March23rd, when I went to check my e-mail mes-sages and found it loaded with many “Get

Well” wishes from some old longtime JCISenate friends from years gone by and frommany people I have never met!

The following were individuals I haven't

seen in some years, they are as follows:Bert Kennedy # 05922, Candada, Tony Fou-bert #31149, Canada, Alan Salmon #12323,Canada, Earl Sawyer #28243, Missouri,

Mary Sawyer #49390, Missouri, Mike Har-ris #24801, North Carolina, and Guy Mor-ris #22998, Jamaica and special “Get Well”wishes were received from 1987-1988 US

JCI Senate President Larry A. Sheeler#16232 of Nevada, the gentleman I servedunder when I was state JCI Senate Presi-dent that same year.

The following individuals are people Ihave never met; they also sent “Get WellWishes”.Dennis Sawkins #12054, New Zealand, Vik

Ferrugia #59813, Canada, Arvind Sharma#46592, Canada, Rene Navarro #19422,Canada, Kim Newline #34940, Florida.Another individual I heard from was one I

wrote to years ago, when I was the 1989-95US JCI Senate Ambassador to Canada to

OTHER NOTES1. Still nice on occasion that I get a tele-

phone call from 2002-2003 NY JCI SenatePresident Chris Nunn #60786, as well asBill Bates #40296, both from Utica.2. Also too, to this day I still exchange holi-

day greetings and E-mails with JCI SenatorFran Royceanna-Hill #40701 of Bermuda, who since her marriage some years agonow makes her home in Pentangeiushene,

Ontario, Canada.3. And a big “CONGRATULATIONS”goes out to Senator Larry Goldberg #54216who retired, on March 30th, from the City

of Buffalo, after serving 36 years in it'sPost Office Department.4. Another huge“CONGRATULATIONS” goes out to 1996-

1997 New York JCI Senate President RonWeiler #28613 whose business SterlingTents and Awnings was named Business ofthe Year by the Genesee County Chamber

of Commerce. The business is 100 hundredyears old this year. It was started in 1911by his wife's grandfather Roie Sterling.Ron's father in law William Sterling took

over the business in 1960. He was the own-er until Ron bought the business fromWilliam in 1979.5. And ending on a sad note, my condo-

Until next time, Yours in JCI Spirit,Jim Harmaty #318091987-1988 President

Dallas For t Wor thNational Meeting in Dallas For t Wor th, Texas

You’ll notice that my articles will often be targeted

more about my experiences as a new Member of the

Senate and at Jaycees. The reason for this is that JCISenators are Jaycees, and we need to aid the Jaycees

when requested to keep them solvent to keep the JCI

Senate a alive.

My second National meeting with the US JCI

Senate was fantastic. I think I may even be getting over

my shyness and reserved demeanor. Ok, anyone who .

has met me for even a brief time knows this is a bit of a

fib. My typical outgoing nature is typically pretty

apparent from the moment you meet me, but, my 1st

meeting in Lisle, IL, I was a bit out of my element afterso many years of being the elder Jaycee, I’ve become

the younger newer member. Like the Jaycees, the JCI

Senate is happy to greet you, talk to you and offer you

adult beverages. There is a different wisdom they

possess and while some Jaycees are intimidated, the

Senate has the best intentions on passing on their wisdom

their past experiences and their adventurous

stories. In fact I think I’m even guilty of forgetting at

times that JCI Senators are just older Jaycees, yet not

necessarily more mature. There was more sittingaround talking, playing new card games like Golf,

Screw Your Neighbor and a drinking game a bit to

complicated for me to follow. I did find some younger

Senators, and younger at heart Senators that danced for

a couple hours at the Club in the hotel, I felt like I was

a Jaycee again especially after going to bed at 4 am this

morning.

I met a very wise Jaycee this weekend, his

name is Rick and you may know him, his dad is the

current US Senate President. He was raised with the Jaycees being such a big part of his families life yet he

doesn’t have a local chapter nearby. My son is a few

months away from being Jaycee age and my chapter is

still alive, but facing challenges. I want him to have the

opportunities I’ve had with the Jaycees and in life.

This is where the Senate can help, be available when

called upon, stay connected to fellow Senators and

remember life is full of opportunities.

RETURN THE FAVORThe Return The Favor program began under USJCI Senate

President, Larry Sheeler (#16232) in 1987-88 as the “Yes WeCan Help” program. It was developed as an offshoot of USJaycee President Gary Wilkinson’s “Yes We Can” theme. Lat-er that same year the program was changed to “Return theFavor.” The chairman that first year was Mike Harris

(#24801) of North Carolina. From those beginnings, JCI Senators have been recognizedfor outstanding efforts they have contributed to local Jayceechapters and State Organizations. Senators have returned the

favor to Jaycees by serving as judges for individual awardcompetitions, providing training for local chapters and atstatewide meetings and as a resource for new member recruit-ment. Many State Senate Organizations serve their Jaycees byhosting state meetings, providing staff for fundraising activi-

ties and serving as a mentor in the planning and presentationof other state Jaycee programs. All of these activities justscratch the surface of the support that Senators provide asthey work to Return The Favor.

The Return The Favor program is designed to recognize indi-vidual Senators and State JCI Senate organizations for theimpact they provide through assistance at projects, activities, trainings and through mentoring provided to the Jaycees. Out-

standing senators and State JCI Senate organizations will berecognized through the submission of completed nominationsat each of the National Board Meetings. Nomination informa-tion is attached. I am also collecting statistical informationfrom those individuals and State organizations that may not

be interested in being considered for the awards. The ActivityLog is, also, attached. This information will be used to com-pile information on the level of service being provided to theJaycees and may be used for articles on those who are return-

ing the favor. If your state has a Return The Favor coordina-tor, please send me with their contact information. The dead-lines for nominations are: September 1, 2011; January 1,2012; June 1, 2012. These are “in hand” deadlines and elec-tronic submissions are encouraged.

If you have any questions about the 2011 – 2012 Return TheFavor Program, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thanksfor all of those who are making an impact by Returning TheFavor!

Texas VisitThis was my 1st trip to Texas and while I didn’t get to site see as much as I wouldhave liked I did get a great tour of Dallas Cowboys Stadium including catching atouchdown pass in the end zone. Being able to go down on the field and know

tomorrow’s Monday Night football game between the Cowboys and Redskins, (isthat politically correct) will be played where I was standing Friday. I kind of reliv-ed my High School Days of playing on the football team, and by that, I mean, sit-ting on the bench a lot. It makes me think, damn these guys are lucky to make so

much money to play a sport, and maybe, if I just applied myself a little more, andhad 100X more talent I could be…. Yeah right, however, as a Jaycee or a JCI Sena-tor if you apply yourself you can do great things. You won’t make millions, youwon’t get cheering fans, but you will make a difference in people’s lives and expe-rience opportunities others just wished the had. I think those are more important.

The Jaycees and the Senate has provided me and I guess you opportunities to learnnew skills, meet a diverse group of people and travel to places around the countryand the world, oh, and meet friends instantly because they’re Jaycees too.

Renewing YourMembershipI was recently asked what are the NYSSenators doing and why should I

renew my membership? The NYS JCI Senators are an elitegroup of people who know how toextend a helping hand to those in need

and razz old friends while reminicingabout good times gone by. – If you’rereading this you probably are a Senatoror a Jaycee aspiring to be a Senator. What are we doing? We have 3 official

State meetings where all Senators areinvited to partake in Food, Beveragesand Fellowship. We have a short buteffective board meeting to discuss

issues facing the Senate, the Jayceesand our communities. We assist theJaycees at these meetings as Mentors,Judges, and provide friendship and

sometimes financial assistance for theirendevors. Our expenses have greatly increased,Hospitality suites that were once free, cost us several hundred dollars for

these meetings, the Jaycees havedecreased in size so our attendance atthese meetings is greatly appreciatedby the State Jaycees. Traveling expens-

es are higher and even postage hasgone up. We need your financial sup-port and more importantly we wantyou to come out and join us for somefun and food.

Why should you support the NYS JCISenate? There are so many reasons, most of all because Jaycees help othersand your support helps us preserve the

organization.Thank You for visiting – Contact meanytime.David SternSenator #68349
