The Celebration of Sacraments

Infant Baptism: The Sacrament of Baptism is regularly celebrated on Sunday during or after the Eucharistic Liturgy. Registered parishioners are asked to arrange for the Baptismal Preparation Class and the Liturgical Celebration by calling the Parish Office.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults: RCIA is the process of growing in your faith and love of God. Weekly gather-ings take place from September until Easter. If you are interested in learning about Catholicism and joining us please call Deacon Tom at the rectory. Penance: The Sacrament of Penance is celebrated at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday at IC, 9:30 a.m. at HSP and 10:30 a.m. IC every Sunday or by appointment.

Matrimony: Anyone planning to be married must contact the parish at least six months in advance. The exact date and time of your wedding should not be determined until after consultation with a priest or deacon. If either party has previously been civilly or religiously married, the Presider is not permitted to set a date for the wedding without resolving the previous marriage.

Pastoral Care of the Sick: When a parishioner is admitted to the hospital, nursing home, or confined to home because of age or infirmity, please call the Parish Office. Parishioners are ready to visit and to bring Holy Communion. When one is seriously ill, the healing Presence of the Lord should be requested in the Sacrament of the Sick.

In the event that you are in need of a priest or deacon and there is no one in the office: Please try the emergency number at 419-243-6031 or call Deacon Tom on his cell phone at 567-686-4167 and leave a message with your phone number and he will return your call as soon as possible.

Dear People of God, I began a series on faith by mentioning that it all begins with a very ordinary human capacity to be curious and rapidly moves on to another ordinary human desire to have things in some kind of order, or what I referred to as the recipe. To move this series forward, we need to know that for any number of reasons (which you can discover by perusing my volume The Human as Thinker in the HSP Library), all of us will experience both curiosi-ty and ordering in very different ways; as a result, the essential first foundation block of a Christian faith is its individuality, what our separated brethren often refer to as the personal encounter with Jesus the Christ. Each of us comes to the search for the divine from a unique perspective which will yield up a unique discovery of the divine: in the Christian milieu, this discovery of the divine is Jesus. Some of us make that discovery with a lot of help from parents or friends; others will travel a long per-sonal journey before getting there. Where we have help, our image will resemble that of the helpers, but where it’s been a long, slow trek, what we envision in the divine may not resemble anything anyone else has ever ‘seen’. In the end, none of us (barring a miracle) have seen Je-sus, but any of us can have a very real encounter with what we cannot see and then render the unseen as if Jesus had a particular appearance, shape, size, colora-tion and so on. Each of us has a personal recipe for what Jesus would look like, sound like, act like, and so on. For some that encounter will be shaped by culture and history so that a good Polish babushka will more often than not arrive at a personal relationship founded on the long struggle of Poland to find its freedom in the world.

An Iraqi Christian may well ‘see’ Jesus as a suffering, abused martyr since martyrs are far more common there than they are here in the U.S. A Japanese artist, ren-dering his perception of the Christ, would put pen to pa-per and draw what to us would look like a very Oriental Jesus. For many of us, the images of numerous Europe-an romantic period artists yield up a blond, blue-eyed Jesus who would be comfortable on any contemporary street and is comfortable on many an interior wall where pictures of Jesus are hung. While we cannot see what faith leads us to believe, we are humans who desire and will come up with human images. Thus, because there is no specific description of God the Father in the Bible, we take it for granted that he looks like a father, and an old one at that since he’s been around for a very long time. On the other hand, the Bible says the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus in the form of a dove so we’re quite comfortable with representing what we cannot see as a dove, usually snow white with its wings extended. The point here is multi-faceted. First, each of us wants to see what cannot be seen so creates an interior image which can be translated into visual form. Thankfully, the divine provided a generalized aspect in Jesus, the histor-ic person who walked the dusty roadways of ancient Pal-estine. However, for other people in other times and cultures, the visualization may have taken far different forms: the serpent god of Meso-America, the human body-animal headed god of Egypt, the mystical, many armed deity of India, the spirit of a beloved ancestor and many, many others. All of these are the end result of curiosity and the human inclination to bring order to the disorder around us. With an image comes a grand sense of stability and provides a jumping off point for examination of the how and the why behind the divine. Msgr. Chris
