SCHOOL REPORT.

In pre sent ing this annual report of the condition of theschoo ls of the town

,the Board feel that l ittle need be said .

Doubtless judgment has been rendered upon the action of theBoard individually and co llect ively by our people

,andwhatever

we might say wou ld probably not reverse the dec is ion .

Many embarrass ing s ituations have had to be met and wehave the charity to believe that credit wil l be given us for en

deavoring to secure the greatest good to the greatest numberIt is a hackneyed subject , but the experiences of the pas t

year have demons trated anew the truth of the princ iple thaton ly as parents , teachers and the

'

Schoo l Board work togethercan the best results be obtain ed. N o poss ib le trouble can

arise in the schoo ls wh ich th is combination cannot bring to a

successful issue . We w ish the parents to believe that the teach ‘

ers and School Board have no poss ib le object to serve but thebest interests of the pupils

,and any aid rendered them wil l but

further th is object .R ecogn izing the injustice of giving the scho lars at the center

of the town more schoo l ing than has been given those of theouts ide districts , we have , the past year, divided the schoo lmoney so as to give all the primary scho lars in town equalschool facil ities

,thus securing for the outside d istricts three

terms of n ine weeks each in stead of two terms of ten weeks,as

heretofore . T he principle invo lved in th is change must com$

mend itself to the judgment of all, although in its practical

workings it has caused some friction .

A reference to the posted warrant will show that the Boardask the District to take act ion upon three special subjects .

F irst,in relation to en larging the Grammar schoo l rOom. T h is

is s imply a question of necess ity. S everal scho lars were keptfrom schoo l th is w inter through lack of seating capacity. Wesuggest that the center hall be taken into the room, thus in $

creas ing the seating capacity by twelve .

Second,in relation to changing the method of heating the

building . E ve ryon e recogn izes the advantages of heating byfurnaces in place of stoves in public buildings . T h is methodof heating was contemplated when the building was remodeled .

Shal l it be‘ don e now ?

T h ird,in relation to new floors . When th is subject comes

up for discuss ion we feel that the s trongest language wi l l benone too forceful . E very con s ideration of health and cleanli

ness demands the putting in of a suitablefloo r .H erewith we submit the S tatistical and T reasurer ’s reports

for the year, all of which is respectfully submitted .
