things. Money comes in different shapes and

sizes. It comes in metal and in paper. We use

different currencies depending upon in which

country we live. We have learned Dollars and

cents in our previous classes. Today we will learn

about rupees and paise as well.

Let’s try solving this. If you buy 5 packs of

juice and each pack costs 20 rupees. How much

money will you pay to the shopkeeper?

Some response.

You will pay 100 rupees for 5 packs as each

pack costs 20 rupees .

Today, we shall do a lot of calculations that

involve money. we shall also see how both

multiplication and division help us in calculating

money.

Some response.

We will visit Mike’s shop today. He owns a

bookstore in Mathachussets and he is

conducting a sale today. Mike is

short-handed so Susan is helping her

father. She’s relying on you to make the

sale a success. Let’s join her and give our

TA- Q1

Ask the student to read the question aloud.

What is the cost of a toy car? 35 rupees.

How much money does the customer tender? Customer tenders 3 five rupee coins

and 2 ten rupee coins.

We should find out how much money the

customer tendered in rupees. How many rupees

are there in 3 five rupee coins?

1 five rupee coin equals 5 rupees. So,

3 five rupee coins will be equal to 3 times 5

rupees. That will be 15 rupees.

right.

Keep asking the student if they can see the

whiteboard activity.

How many rupees are there in 2 ten rupee

coins?

1 ten rupee coin is equal to 10 rupees.

So, 2 ten rupee coins will be equal to 2

times 10 rupees.

That will be 20 rupees.

whiteboard activity.

Click on Add to Wallet to validate.

Yes, two times 10 rupees is 20 rupees. What

is the total amount that the customer tenders?

The total amount will be the sum of 15

rupees and 20 rupees. This totals to 35

rupees.

So, we know that the toy car is worth 35

rupees. The customer has 35 rupees too. Can he

purchase the toy car?

Yes.

10

That’s right. We used both multiplication and

addition in this problem. First we converted 10

rupee coins and 5 rupee coins into rupees and

second we found the total rupees that we need

to purchase the car. Can you tell me which one

did we use for what?

Yes.

We used multiplication to convert

rupee coins to rupees and then used

addition to find the total rupees.

TA- Q2

Ask the student to read the question aloud.

What is the cost of the book? 55 rupees.

How much money does the customer tender? 2 quarters of a hundred rupee.

What is the value of 2 quarters of a hundred

rupees?

One quarter of a hundred is equal to

twenty -five rupees. Then 2 quarters of a

hundred will be equal to 2 times

twenty-five rupees.

12

Yes. 2 times twenty-five rupees can also be

written as 25 + 25. Right?

Yes. We can add 25 two times.

This totals to 50 rupees.

Take a snap of the whiteboard work using

or on

top right.

Keep asking the student if they can see the

whiteboard activity.

Yes. Will the customer be able to purchase

the book?

4 robot toys cost 64 rupees. What’s the cost

of each robot toy?

What is the cost of 4 toys? 4 toys cost 64 rupees.

Which mathematical operation will you use

to find the cost of one toy?

Division.

How do you know? 64 rupees are to be distributed equally

among 4 toys. Hence, we will use division.

Right. We have to find the cost of one toy?

Hence this is the unknown. How do you put the

unknown in any division equation?

We use an alphabet like “a” for the

same.

This is what we studied in our last class.

Can you write the division equation?

Yes. The division equation is

4 4 a6 ÷ =

64 is a bigger number to divide by 4. So, for

this division, we will use the area model. Do you

remember the method?

If the student does not remember the area

model, explain that the dividend is broken into 10

times the divisor and the remaining.

Yes. I remember.

How will we expand 64? I will expand 64 into 10 times 4 and

the remaining.

15

Yes, let’s see how you will write it . 64 = 40 + 24

So, how will you calculate? 64 divided by 4 would be the sum of

40 divided 4 and 24 divided by 4.

Can you explain this on the WB? Yes.

4 4 0 4 6 = × 1 + × 6

Take a snap of the whiteboard work using

or on

top right.

Keep asking the student if they can see the

whiteboard activity.

So, what is 64 divided by 4.

It is 10 + 6. That is 16.

Susan has 7 sticky notes of each of the 3

colors. How many sticky notes does she have?

How many sticky notes of each color does

Susan have?

7

How many colors are there? 3

What mathematical operation would you use

to find out the total number of sticky notes?

Multiplication.

Yes, we would need to multiply sticky notes

of each color with the number of colors available.

Total number of sticky notes is unknown here.

3 a 7 × =

18

Let us take that as “a”. Can you write the

multiplication equation?

This is how we write the multiplication

equation. What is the total number of sticky

notes?

It is 3 times 7 which is equal to 21.

So, what is the value of a? a = 21

This is how we identify the unknown in a

multiplication equation. Can you say that as a

sentence?

Seven multiplied by three is

twenty-one.

Probing question

When a number is multiplied by 1, what is

The number itself.

the product?

That’s right. Any number multiplied by 1

gives the number itself as the product. What is

the product if one of the factors in the

multiplication equation is zero?

Any number multiplied by zero gives zero as the

product. Let me tell you another interesting

thing.

We have also studied that if we multiply a

number by a 10, then we write one zero at the

end. Similarly, if we multiply a number by a 100,

then we write two zeros at the end.

Let’s understand this on the WB.

Zero.

TA- Q5

Ask the student to read the question aloud.

How will you find the number of the

notebooks? Will you divide or multiply?

Divide.

Yes. We know each notebook costs 8 rupees.

We have to find out how many groups of 8 will

make 120 rupees. How will we find this?

We will find this by dividing 120 by 8.

We have to find the number of notebooks.

So, that is the unknown here. How will you write

the division equation?

20 a 1 ÷ 8 =

here. How will we expand 120?

I will expand 120 into 10 times 8 and

the remaining.

How will you write it as? 120 = 80 + 40

So, how will you calculate this? 120 divided by 8 would be the sum of

80 divided 8 and 40 divided by 8.

Can you explain this on the WB? Yes.

Take a snap of the whiteboard work using

times 5. So, it would be 40 + 45 = 85

rupees.

So, does Susan have more than 100 rupees? No, she has 85 rupees which are less

than 100 rupees.

Probing question

We multiplied 5 with both 8 and 9 to get the

total rupees that Susan had. How else could we

have found this? Can we add the total five rupee

coins that Susan had and then find the answer?

Yes, the total 5 rupee coins Susan has

is 8 + 9= 17.

The price of a teddy has been reduced by 2

rupees. If a customer buys 13 such teddies, how

many rupees will she save?

We know that during the sale, the prices are

generally reduced. How much does a customer

save per teddy?

2 rupees.

And how many teddies are being bought? 13

So, how much does the customer save in

total?

It will be 13 times 2.

equation with an unknown here? Let’s take any

other letter as an unknown.

3 2 b 1 × =

What is the value of ‘b’? ”b” is the total savings made by a

customer in buying 13 teddies.

How will you solve this? Let’s first split the

numbers into tens and ones. Show it on the WB.

I will break 13 into 10 and 3. Total

savings will be 10 ✕ 2 and 3 ✕ 2. Hence

the answer will be 26 rupees.

36

So we know that she saved 26 rupees. How

do we find the paise she saved?

We know that ₹1 = 100 paise. So, she

will save 26 × 100 paise.

How many paise saved? We have learnt that the product of

numbers multiplied by 10 gets one 0 at the

end or unit place. Here we are multiplying

by 100 so the number gets two 0’s at the

end.So, 26 × 100 = 2600.

She saved 2600 paise.

84 pens were packed equally into 7 packets.

How many pens were packed in each packet?

How will you find the number of the pens in

each packet? Will you divide or multiply?

Divide.

How do you know? 84 pens are being equally packed in 7

packets. Hence we will use division.

We have to find the number of pens in each

packet. So, that is the unknown here. How will

you write the division equation using a letter as

an unknown? Choose any letter of your choice.

4 m 8 ÷ 7 =

Let’s use place value again. How will we

expand 84?

I will expand 84 into 10 times the

divisor and the remaining.

Right. How will you write it as? 84 = 70 + 14

So, how will you calculate this? Instead of dividing the number 84, I

would divide the number 70 and 14 with 7.

Can you explain this on the WB? Yes.

Take a snap of the whiteboard work using

AA1- Q1

Cost of one teddy is ₹2 and that of one toy

train is a quarter of one rupee. What amount of

money should the customers pay for 2 teddies

and 3 toy trains?

Student reads the question aloud.

What is the cost of 1 teddy?

₹2.

What is the price of 2 teddies in paise?

It will be ₹4. This implies

paise00 00 4 × 1 = 4

46

What is the cost of 1 toy train?

1 quarter of one rupee = 25 paise.

What is the price of 3 toy trains in paise?

It will be 3 times 25 paise which is 3

quarters.

How many paise are 3 quarters equal to?

3 times 25.

How will you find out 3 times 25? You know

one way to multiply is also to add the same

number again and again. ?

Repeated addition.

That’s right. Let us add 25 three times to

know what is 3 times 25.

25 + 25 + 25 = 75. Hence, 3 quarters

are equal to 75 paise.

So, what is the price of 2 teddy and 3 toy

trains?

It will be 00 5 75 paise 4 + 7 = 4

That’s right! Which two mathematical

operations did we use in this question?

We used multiplication to convert the

rupees and the quarters of a rupee to paise

and used addition to find the total money

required.

15 general knowledge books, each worth ₹1,

10 comic books, each worth 1 quarter of one

rupee, and 12 superhero posters, each worth 20

paise have been kept on a shelf. What is the

value of the items on the shelf?

Here, we see that all items have their costs

mentioned in different currency units. So, we

should first convert all these into common

currency units. Which currency unit should we

convert all these to?

paise

It is easier to convert rupees to paise. What

is the cost of 15 general knowledge books in

paise?

Cost of general knowledge books will

be 15 times ₹1 which is ₹15. This is equal

to 15 00 500 paise ₹ × 1 = 1

What is the cost of 10 comic books in paise? Each comic book costs 1 quarter of a

rupee(25 paise). So, 10 books will cost 10

quarters of one rupee. This is

paise.0 5 50 1 × 2 = 2

Today we will learn a new concept. It is called

Numerical Expression.

The term numerical expression is made up of two

words, numerical meaning numbers, and

expression meaning phrase. Thus, it is a phrase

involving numbers. It is a mathematical

statement involving only numbers and one or

more operations like addition subtraction

multiplication and division.

Let’s see some numerical expressions on the WB.

Take a snap of the whiteboard work using

or on

top right.

Keep asking the student if they can see the

whiteboard activity.

Numerical expressions do not contain any “equal

to” sign. Let us understand the parts of the

expression on the WB.

Take a snap of the whiteboard work using

or on top

right.

Keep asking the student if they can see the

whiteboard activity.

Ok. Let’s come back to the question now.

What do we have to answer?

What is the numerical expression to

calculate the cost of 4 stationery sets?

What is included in one stationery set? A pencil, a pen, and a pack of wax

colors.

And, we know their prices too. A pencil costs

4 rupees. A pen costs 8 rupees, and a pack of

wax colors costs 20 rupees. So, what is the

It will be 4 + 8 + 20 rupees.

61

numerical expression to calculate the cost of one

stationery set?

We now know the cost of one stationery set.

How will we find the cost of 4 such stationery

sets?

Cost of three stationery sets would be

equal to 4 times the cost of one stationery

set.

In a numerical expression, we will put the

cost of one stationery set in brackets. The

bracket is used to group the expression as one.

Can you write the numerical expression to find

the cost of 4 stationery sets?

Yes. It will be 4 times (4+ 8 +20)

rupees.

Take a snap of the whiteboard work using

or on

top right.

Keep asking the student if they can see the

whiteboard activity.
