5ST. PETERSBURG DESIGN WEEK 2013From 21 to 29 of May 2013 Saint-Petersburg turned to be an international center of design and architecture. The III St. Petersburg Design Week was held in Northern Capital of Russia under the motto Design is Free.

The main platform of the exposition and business program was The Universe of Water Museum Complex, located in the city center. The world famous, best selling and most shocking design star Karim Rashid has visited the Northern Capital for the first time in the framework of the event. Maestro became a guest of honor of the St. Petersburg Design Week Grand Opening Ceremony and his splendid 2 hours speech gathered over 600 people! Guests had an opportunity to explore the two floor Design Week Expo. There were presented best interiors from the leading salons of the city on the first floor and the second floor was fulfilled with art installations created by Russian designers from Saint-Petersburg, Moscow, Tomsk and other Russian cities. These bright events became festive starting point of the design journey.

Then, you will learn how to concentrate the creative energy of 8 countries, 15foreign guests, 16 designers and 47Russian commercial partners, to gather them on 22venues, invite 10,000 visitors and hold 2 contests, 4 exhibitions, 22lectures, 5 round tables, 2 movie nights and 10 secular events.

ST. PETERSBURG DESIGN WEEK: GRAND OPENINGStart of the St. Petersburg Design Week was traditionally accompanied by the Design Week EXPO. This year the venue of its deployment was The Universe of Water museum complex, located on the historic site Vodokanal St. Petersburg. The key moment was Design of the Future lecture by Karim Rashid. KARIM RASHID: STYLE IS A STORY, DESIGN IS A PRESENTThe main hero of the Third St. Petersburg Design Week 2013 was a genius, cosmopolitan, comprehen-sive talent, a man with very original views and famous fan of pink color star designer Karim Rashid. His ideas are sometimes shocking, and work is inspiring by its multi-di-mensionality and a special energy. On May, 22 Karim Rashid gave a Design of the Future lecture at The Universe of Water museum complex, and the next day he talked with the architects and design-ers from St. Petersburg in the ARDE showroom.

About Repetition

We no longer need the chandeliers and candelabra. Instead, use, for example, cost-effective LED-back-light.

About Corners

We live in a world of corners that we do not use. It would be wonderful to design a room that looks like a bubble.

About Bathroom

Everyone says that bathroom definitely needs a ceramic tile. And I say why? Maybe it would be better to make everything from rubber in the bathroom?

About Style

I try not to follow style. We are surrounded by a huge number of images, and we create things for the image, and not for the real experience. And I want to communicate with the world, I want to feel that world where I live.

About history

The history has nothing to do with me. I know it, I respect, I can appreciate it, and actually, thats it. And the last thing to do is to imitate it, repeat it.

About Fashion

Designers dont design something new, but stylize. Earlier this pocket was needed for a handkerchief, but now no one uses. Maybe now one need a pocket for his phone?

LECTURE BY CHARLOTTE MOSSOn May, 21 famous American decorator Charlotte Moss delivered a lecture to the designers from St. Petersburg. As an economist by first education and abruptly changing her life in the mid-1980s, Charlotte Moss has designed thousands of interiors across America. In addition, she is a columnist for decor magazines, leads two blogs, involved in charity work, writing books, creating a collection of porcelain for PICKARD, furniture for CENTURY ICONS, exclusive carpets for STARK, enamels designs for HALCYON DAYS and ceramics for SIEBERT & RICE. The main topic of the Inspiration, Creativity and Design lecture was the question what motivates designers to be creative and forces to create something new.About Impressions

Decorators work is impossible without traveling and impressions collecting. I collect everything that hooked me pieces of fabric, magazine clippings. And another very important thing for me is my impressions. You just need to feel what is happening to you and around you.

We need to look at the world with open eyes, because the world is the big secret that is hidden in the most routine things and places.About Sources of Inspiration

Sources of inspiration can be found everywhere. For example, creating a pattern of tissue Im often inspired by plants in the landscaped garden of my house. I also like going to museums, especially those in which people once lived. And, of course, an endless source of new experiences is creative talents.About the Ideal Customer

Special kind of charity, so-called show-house, is very popular in the USA. Home owners grant it for design companies participating in the charity event. They supply all the necessary materials and furnishings. After the completion of the house it turns into a museum of modern design, which is opened to the public for a modest fee. There are no customers, there are no restrictions: you can do whatever you want. This is the perfect client who never tells you no.

JO GOOSSENS: TRENDS IN MODERN DESIGNBelgian designer, Jo Goossens worked at Calcutta awell-known textile manufacturer. On May, 23 he delivered a lecture on Interior trends in contemporary Europe in the Piterra conference hall.

In 2010 I realized that the green color captures the urban environment. This subject is widely used in fashion: Emerald became the main color in 2013. Interior designers go even further they use not only the color but also the texture and floral motifs.

VITRINA FAIR 2013: NEW COLLECTIONS AND IDEASOne of the most anticipated events of the St. Petersburg Design Week was the interior exhibition Vitrina Fair 2013, which was held in the Aquarius showroom for the twelfth time. This year Vitrina Fair brought together a record number of participants 26 premium manufacturers from around the world.

The latest developments and innovative design ideas for decorating homes and public spaces were presented in a two-story loft interiors. Equipment and furniture for bathrooms were demonstrated by AeT, Bagno Piu, Cleopatra, Eurolegno, Flaminia, Hansgrohe, Hewi, Kermi, Keuco, Sunshower, Thermae Wellness, Toto. The exhibition dedicated to the decorative materials and coverings included collections of Ceramica Fioranese, Cranberry Home Collection, Mramoristica, Petraluxe, Tangerdesign, Tau Ceramica, F-massive floors. Kitchens of ELMAR and MARCHI CUCINE, furniture of BLA STATION, EFG, FALMA ITALIA, INNO, MINACCIOLO were also presented within Vitrina Fair 2013. The special guest was the OCEANSIDE GLASSTILE, a manufacturer of glass mosaic and tiles.

At a press conference before the opening of the exhibition, representatives of factories discussed key trends of contemporary design.

Traditionally, Vitrina Fair invited four Petersburg architect to decorate Aquarius windows. Creating original installation takes place with the continued support of HANSGROHE. This year, the creative vision of design showcases was presented by Michael Dobrovolsky, Olga Finn, Igor Ivanov and Alexei Titov.

SPRING: EXCELLENCE, TALENT, INSPIRATIONIn the framework of Russia-Netherlands cross-cultural year an exhibition Spring: excellence, talent, inspiration showed the process of inspiring the new creative waves of designers by previous generations of top-designers and influencers. This exposition introduced 12 works of bright representatives of product design in Netherlands. Getting familiar with design-objects by Piet Hein Eek, bureau Scholten &Baijings and Maarten Baas the visitors could also learn more about design-objects by Willeke Jongejan (Akzo) and Corien Pompe (Volvo).

LECTURE BY MARCO PIVAAn Italian architect and designer, one of the favorites and a permanent participant of St. Petersburg Design Week Marko Piva came this year to give two lectures about ephemeral design on different locations: at the new project Biblioteka and at the lecture hall of the ProArte Fund. Marco shared his working experience with big brands and told about his interesting recent project on creating retail design for the BVLGARI jewelry boutiques.

PRESENTATION OF THE GREATER PARISOn May, 25 CEO of the Inter-national studio Greater Paris Bertrand Lemoine presented an ambitious project of the Paris metropolitan area Im-plementation of the project is timed for 40 years, it is based on compliance with the requirements of the Kyoto protocol, the integration of the suburbs, the creation and reform of the transport infrastructure.

The emergence of new social and business centers should affect all spheres of the city life: it will reduce the load on the transportation network, promote economic development of problem neighborhoods in the Paris Red Belt, simplify municipal government system and, most importantly, according to Bertrand Lemoine, im-prove the lives of Parisians.

EAMES MOVIE EVENINGOn May, 23 film screening was held in the Design Gallery\bulthaup. Short films show created by Charles and Ray Eames the classics of American design from around the world was organized by Vitra, which still continues to produce items made by these famous designers. Mini-exhibition of the Vitra objects designed by Eames served as the backdrop for the video show. It was the third Eames movie evening in Russia: the first two were held in Moscow.

Movie Evening was opened by Eames Demetrius, the grandson of the famous Eames, who recorded a special video greetings for the occasion! Film screening was accompanied by the lecture. A design historian Pavel Ulyanov talked about the unique works of the Eames. 7 films were selected to demonstrate a range of various interests of Charles and Ray Eames. All in all, the heritage of the famous designers consists of more than 100 films, which they have been shooting for 28 years.

LISTENING TO ARCHITECTURE, CREATING SPACESOn May, 23 an exhibition Listening to Architecture, Creating Spaces combined three important events. All of them have great social significance and cultural view, as urged to consider design and architecture with full awareness of its responsibility. The relationships between man and the environment, people and society have long ceased to be a purely private matter, and architecture and design are the applied areas that can affect the quality of life. You could to get acquainted with the projects developed during the Design for All workshop. New concepts are designed to help visually impaired people to feel comfortable and to navigate in space. K + K project (Kitchen + Wheel) is an innovative design of the kitchen for wheelchair users. All elements have been calculated in detail and together they forms an ideal modern kitchen, comfortable for people with disabilities. Third project presented

green, sustainable architecture that reflected the current environmental and economic requirements.

SECRETS OF RUSSIAOn May, 28 meeting with Finnish designers Aamu Song and Johan Olin was held at the Finnish Insti-tute. Six years ago Compa-ny studio came up with a game travelling around the world to collect the secrets of traditional pro-duction and reinterpret them in a contemporary subjects. They visited such countries as Finland, Korea, Belgium and Russia. Their trip to Russia was a long, literally and figu-ratively. Two years were spent in the libraries in search of primary sources, and then Aamu Song and Johan Olin began a trip to Russia, where, working on this project, they spent 167 days.
