EN 143 and related standards

• EN 143 describes test method and classification for respirator filters

• All categories of respirators have different standards but they all refer to EN 143 for test method– Filtering face-pieces (disposable masks) (EN 149)– Re-usable half masks (EN 405 or EN 140, filters: EN 141, EN 143,

EN 371, EN 372)– Re-usable full face masks (EN 136)– SCBA self contained breathing apparatus (EN 137 or EN 145)

• Certification and QC testing is not described in the test method– They are described in EU PPE guidelines

European PPE Guidelines

• These Guidelines apply to all personal protection equipment (safety shoes, rock climbing gear, respirators…..)

• All respirator filters, filtering face pieces etc fall under categories II or III

• EC type-examination is done by accredited labs – BGIA in Germany or HSL in UK are

examples.• Category III filter products require “CE

nnnn” certificate– nnnn stands for EN143, EN149 etc.– P2 and P3 filters and FFP3 face masks

typically are category III– QC system or production QM is

necessary– Production QM can be done by the

manufacturer (regular audit necessary) or statistically by an accredited lab

Testing Respirator FiltersUS 42 CFR part 84

• Certification Testing (NIOSH) requires filter loading tests that vary in length from a few minutes to ~ 2 ½ hours each (Destructive Test)

• Quality Control Plan (part of certification process) specifies quality control testing that will be done (after respirator is approved for manufacture)– QC testing can be short (10-12 second) tests of initial

efficiency– Large number of filters (in some cases 100%) will be tested– Some level of loading test may also be included (annual or

testing each lot of media are examples)– Most testers are used for QC testing

Testing Respirator Filters

• Respirator Filters– NIOSH uses TSI 8130 for their Respirator Standard

(in accordance with 42 CFR part 84)• Manufacturers worldwide make respirators for US market

(must comply with 42 CFR part 84)• Many respirator manufactures want to copy EXACTLY

what NIOSH does for testing.

– Most of the Model 8130 filter testers so far used in the field (>70% historically) are for testing respirators or media used for respirators.

New EN 143 Equivalent Testers• TSI Automated Filter Testers

models 8127-1-EN (paraffin oil only) and 8130-1-EN (paraffin oil and NaCl) are now available.

• Oil and salt aerosol generators for EN equivalent testing are also available to upgrade existing testers.

• It is now possible to do testing according to European and USA standards, with both oil and salt, all in one machine.

What’s Different about the EN Testers Compared to the

Current Testers?• Essentially, the –EN aerosol generators are

different– Both the oil and salt aerosol generators have been

specially adapted (i.e. set-up and operating parameters) and fully checked out to new procedures

– EN 143 and US versions will also have different check out certificates, EN 143 compliant generators well be specially labeled

The ‘Equivalence Dilemma’

• It is a well known fact that the particle size distribution of a well calibrated EN 143 system is different from the size distribution described in the standard (original measurements have been made more than 20 years ago).

• Mass concentrations must be adjusted for both oil and salt aerosol

• Aerosol substance (oil test) and size distribution (oil and salt test) must be adjusted

– Paraffin oil: Aerosol should match EN 143 size distribution as measured at BGIA. Test results must match!

– NaCl: Aerosol size distribution must be adjusted such that the light scattering photometer response is equal to the response of a sodium flame photometer (as measured at BGIA). Test results must match!

• An extensive series of comparison measurements was run last November at the German PPE accredited test lab BGIA, Sankt Augustin

Positioning Statement

• For manufacturers of respirators, respirator filters, half masks (i.e. disposables), etc. who must adhere to EN 143, the TSI automated filter tester models 8130-EN and 8127-EN provide equivalent QC-measurements for both oil and salt test aerosols.

• Compared to competitive filter testers, the TSI model 8130-EN offers both oil and salt testing in the same machine. Additionally, this same tester can be easily converted and used to comply with US 42 CFR part 84 by purchasing and installing only the appropriate aerosol generators.

• As a result, customers will greatly benefit by realizing a significant reduction in capital investment, space requirements, operating costs, and operator training requirements.

SFP SERVICES (Sodium Flame Photometry)

SFP SERVICES is the product of two people JIM WILLS and DENNIS FIVEASH. http://www.sfpservices.com

Moore's (Wallisdown) Ltd. (manufacturer of sodium flame test equipment up to 1998) decided to concentrate their efforts on their core business (aerospace components) and close the air filter test equipment division. With over 30 years experience of sodium flame test equipment and testing between them Dennis and Jim decided to set up SFP SERVICES to continue the supply and service to old (ex Moores ) and new customers in every way they could.

SFP also distributes Grimmequipment for filter testingin the UK, serving-EN 1822 (HEPA/ULPA)-ASHRAE 52.2 (Grimm OPC)-EN 779 (Grimm OPC)

Grimm services SFP equipment in Germany.

Palas® GMBHFilter Test Systems for EN standard

Palas has developed a Salt tester using a SFP Sodium flame photometer and using their own components for aerosol generation, filter holders etc.

For Oil testing they use OPCs (Welas) as detectors and claim they perform a “better” test than EN 143. Customers hardly agree since they need to comply with the standard.

Comparison – Aerosol Generation

• ATI Laskin Nozzle generator– Sensitive to temperature and

exhaust backpressure• Affects concentration and

particle size

– Narrow range of liquid levels to keep consistent particle size

– They used impactor technique for their oil generator

– Charge $1400 for kit to convert from DOP to PAO

• TSI uses an atomizer– Insensitive to temperature and

pressure– Can operate over large range

of liquid levels– Use felt filter to stable aerosol

size– Can generate DOP and PAO

without additional cost

Comparison – Detector• ATI uses Single Photometer

– Calibrate at the beginning of shift • Measure background (zero) and

upstream concentration (span) • Rely on these values for all penetration

calculations until they calibrate again

– Manual recalibration required 3-4 times per shift

• To measure background and upstream concentration

• Each recalibration requires 3 to 10 repeats (3-5 minutes per repeat)

– Only measuring Downstream concentration during filter test

– Full flow goes through photometer• Takes a long time to purge aerosol

after failed filter• Increases false negatives for next

2-3 filters

• TSI uses Dual Photometers– Calibrate at the beginning of shift

• Measure background (zero) and upstream/downstream concentration (span and correlation)

• Measure background and upstream and downstream in every test

– Automated calibration is done during every test

• Automated Zero and Span• This doesn’t increase test times• Most accurate penetration values

– Simultaneous upstream/downstream concentration measurements

– Partial sample flow during test• Purge design to clear photometers

between tests– New Background every test

Comparison – Utilities

• ATI Air consumption– 12 SCFM

• Laskin Nozzle requires more air than atomizer

• Use Venturi pump to create flow

• Requires larger investment in compressors and lines

• ATI Exhaust– Needs to be balanced to

atmospheric pressure• If not, particle size is affected

• TSI Air Consumption– 7 SCFM

• Atomizer requires less air than Laskin Nozzle

• Internal Vacuum pump consumes no air

• TSI Exhaust– No requirement to

balance

Comparison – Flow Measurement

• ATI Mass Flow Meter – Measure mass flow

• Mass flow does not relate to face velocity

– Requires frequent manual entries of temperature and pressure to correct the flow

• TSI Orifice Flow Meter– Measure Volumetric Flow

• Volumetric flow is directly related to face velocity

– No need to compensate for temperature or pressure
