PRESIDENTS' MESSAGEDecember 2018 - January 2019

“Dreams are renewable. No matter what our age or condition, there are still untapped possibilities within us

and new beauty waiting to be born.” Dr. Dale Turner

Another year has passed and has proven to have been another full year of activities here at the Woman’s Club. We wish to thank all who participated in our Pampered Chef party. Because of your purchases, we were able to donate $345 to the American Cancer Society —- which will be used at local facilities. Our film night, which was all about “American Musical Cinema” was another fun evening listening to Kevin Doherty and sharing snacks and drinks. He has promised to return in the spring with a film evening centering on “Hitchcock revisited“. Our November Club Day which featured a musical combo was a big hit—- and we hope to get the musicians back to our Club for a future event. A big thank you to all who participated in the Boodle Brigade night — it was great to see both old and new members alike, and kudos to member Diane Martino who heads up this worthwhile evening to support the troops.

Many thanks to Barbara Dannenberg and Colleen Fay, who put together a fantastic Book and Author luncheon. This year, it featured local author Jacqueline Friedland, who spoke about her book “Trouble the Water”. It was well received and a great afternoon to get together with fellow Club members and friends.

In November, we were also very happy and proud to celebrate the 100th year of Thrift Shop downtown, which featured a proclamation from our Mayor, Tom Roach. Congratulations to Judy Korman, and her committee members on this well deserved honor!

This month, in addition to our annual holiday themed Club

Day we will have our Holiday Tea on December 14. If you haven’t attended either before, please consider joining us for one or both of these festive afternoons....it’s sure to get you in the Holiday Spirit! Of course, our annual Holiday Boutique, put together by Heather Adessa, is a guaranteed enjoyable evening of eating, drinking, and shopping —— talk about a winning combination! It’s a great night on which to invite friends and family —- so hope to see you on Tuesday, December 4.

Looking forward to January, we will have our Winter Tea on Sunday, January 27, and check your emails for other events.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank ALL of our Board Members and our Committee chairs and members, who help us in so many, many ways to help keep our Club going. There are too many names to list here, so please take the time to read their names listed in the yearbook. It truly takes a village, and it is no small feat to keep our Club House in shape and in working order so that we can enjoy and be proud of our historical home. Please consider joining our board or committees, as we can always use assistance in both small and big ways.

Please read your weekly emails to keep up with all of the activities and opportunities to become involved in the Club!

We wish our Woman’s Club family a blessed holiday season, with health and happiness in the New Year, 2019!

Best,

Cathy Schauber and Susan DohertyCo-Presidents

AFTERNOON BOOK CLUB Thursday, December 11

2:00 p.m. – Clubhouse Living Room All Members and Non-members Invited

DECEMBER SELECTION: The Woman in the Window by A. J. Finn is a psychological suspense thriller that focuses on a single character whose moods, secrets and fears drive the plot. Dr. Anna Fox, once a prominent child psychologist, now an agoraphobic, alcoholic recluse spends her days viewing her neighbors through her Nikon’s zoom lens and eventually witnesses a murder. ”Remarkable... Totally original”Stephen King. ”A dark, twisty confection with an irresistible film noir premise.” Ruth Ware. ”Compelling, wrenching, and gasp-for-breath exciting….I was blown away.” Joe Hill .

JANUARY SELECTION: Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate is based on one of America’s most notorious real-life scandals—in which Georgia Tann, director of a Memphis-based adoption organization, kidnapped and sold poor children to wealthy families all over the country. Lisa Wingate’s riveting, wrenching, and ultimately uplifting tale reminds us how, even though the paths we take can lead to many places, the heart never forgets where we belong. This novel is about the Foss children, all five of them, who are kidnapped from a Mississippi River shanty boat and thrown into a Tennessee Children’s Home Society orphanage. “An unforgettable read…. This captivating novel will quite likely break your heart, but because it’s Lisa Wingate at the helm, you will not be left broken. She is a master storyteller and never fails to get to the heart of what makes us hold on to hope.” Susan Meissner, author of Secrets of a Charmed Life.

A Message From Maryann Martin

“There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.”

Edith Wharton

Holiday lights make everything feel festive. The Woman’s Club is no exception with beautiful wreaths and poinsettias adorning the club house. Our schedules are filled with many activities including the Holiday Boutique and dinner on Tuesday December 4. Heather Adessa always does a fine job organizing the many vendors with new and interesting merchandise and creating a festive holiday atmosphere. Once again we will be collecting Toys for Tots for The White Plains Youth Bureau. For every toy you bring you will receive a ticket for our raffle. There is no limit on the number of toys you can bring. So bring toys and bring friends to this fun event.

In addition to Toys for Tots, proceeds from the evening will go to support Hudson Valley Honor Flight. HVHF, a chapter of the National Honor Flight Network, is a non-profit created solely to honor America’s veterans for all their sacrifices. They transport vets from Westchester, Rockland, Putnam and surrounding counties to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials at no cost to the veterans.Top priority is given to World War II and terminally ill veterans from all wars. Guardians fly with the veterans on every flight providing assistance and helping veterans have a safe, memorable and rewarding experience.

“Boodle Night” has turned into a new tradition at the Club. Diane Martino has invigorated an incredible group of members and friends to assemble, pack, wrap and ship care packages filled with holiday greetings, snacks, reading material and treats. Contents of the packages were donated and collected over several weeks by generous club members, and various church groups. Donations for shipping the boxes were also collected. These “Boodle” packages bring joy to our troops and let them know they are being thought of during the holidays. The boxes are expected to arrive right before Christmas.

Our WINTER TEA will be held on Sunday January 27, and will be organized by Lauren Candela-Katz and Lorraine Frye. Please contact them if you can bake or bring a dessert or tray of tea sandwiches.

Coming up right after the New Year will be an organizational meeting for our SPRING FASHION SHOW and LUNCHEON to benefit scholarships for WPHS students. Please contact me if you are interested in joining us.

Let’s make 2019 the best ever!

CLUB DIAL NEEDS YOUClub Dial, is solely paid for by our advertisers. Right now we are in need of more advertisers. If you have any contacts that you think might be interested in advertising, please contact our co-managing editors, Elizabeth Kurth or Judy Schermerhorn for rates and information. Since Barbara Dannenberg’s retirement from being Advertising Manager for Dial that position is open. Any interest??? We also are in need of a “Dial Shopper” who will visit the advertisers and then write an article about them for Dial. We would love to have you contribute articles or “blurbs” for Serendipity also. Please contact Judy Schermerhorn at 948–7758 or [email protected] if interested. Our members would love to hear news from you. Alloy Printing is used for layout, printing and mailing. The issue editor is the liaison between the Club Dial and the printer. We hope we will see an article from you or a new advertiser you have brought to us in an upcoming issue.

Thank you in advance.

HUDSON VALLEY HONOR FLIGHT

This year’s beneficiary for our annual Holiday Boutique is Hudson Valley Honor Flight. On Saturday, 19 May 2018, I had the privilege of participating as a guardian on Hudson Valley Honor Flight Mission 20. Hudson Valley Honor Flight is one of many Honor Flight organizations around the country whose mission it is to fly World War II and Korean War veterans to Washington DC, so they can visit the war memorials and Arlington National Cemetery. Vietnam War veterans can participate if they are terminally ill. As there is limited space on the flight, the emphasis is on the World War II and Korean War veterans right now.

I was matched up with a Korean War veteran. Some veterans have a family member as their guardian but others a volunteer like me. Safety of the veterans is of utmost importance and all the guardians are required to attend a program outlining the procedures and events that will be taking place and advising them on what to look out for.

I arrived at Westchester County Airport at 5:30 am to register and then to meet up with Ken, my veteran. After collecting our T-shirts, coffee and Danish, we and the other 65 veterans, 65 guardians and 50 or so support staff headed to the buses for the ride over to the JP Morgan hangar. A motorcycle escort led us over which included members of local police departments but also members of local motorcycle clubs who came out to ride and honor our veterans.

A large crowd of well-wishers were gathered in the rain outside the hangar to greet us. Fire trucks from many local fire departments

gave us a water salute as we pulled in. Family members, friends, Boy and Girl Scouts were all there, waving flags and shaking the veteran’s hands and thanking them for their service. Some of the veterans were walking, some were in wheelchairs as we made our way inside. There was a steady rain falling but it did nothing to dampen the spirits of the veterans and well-wishers gathered there.

Once inside, a musical medley of the anthems of each of the services were playing. Members of each of the services, Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard and Merchant Marines were asked to stand and be recognized. We also had one female Korean War veteran on our flight. In total, there were 66 veterans, two thirds served in Korea, one third in World War II (including three 97-year olds) and 2 men who served in Korea and Vietnam. The veterans hailed from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

After a welcoming ceremony which included speeches by George Latimer and former mayor Joe Delfino, a Korean War veteran himself, we boarded our American Airlines jet for the quick flight to Reagan National Airport. Like our reception at the JP Morgan hangar, there were crowds ready to welcome us in DC. A very special visitor awaited my veteran as his granddaughter who lives in Virginia was at the airport to greet him.

With a police escort, we proceeded into Washington DC proper. We first stopped at the World War II monument, a beautiful marble structure with panels devoted to each of the 48 states (Hawaii and Alaska were not states at the time of WWII) and 8 pillars representing US territories and the District of Columbia. Scenes along the walls represent the war experience. Most moving is the Freedom Wall which consists of 4048 gold stars, each representing 100 servicemen killed in action.

From there, we went to Arlington National Cemetery where we observed the changing of the guard and a wreath laying ceremony. The rows and rows of perfectly lined grave markers is always striking and some of the veterans had graves they wished to visit. The next stop was the Korean and Vietnam Memorials. A Marine guard greeted us there and the veterans had their choice of visiting one or both monuments to visit. Most of us are familiar with the Vietnam War Memorial inscribed with the names of all those who died during the war. My veteran and I visited the Korean Memorial. The long granite wall is etched with the photos of ordinary soldiers participating in a variety of war-related activities. In the garden along the wall are

19 stainless steel statues representing a platoon on patrol. When you look at the reflection of the statues on the granite wall, now there are 38 soldiers, a reference to the 38th parallel and the 38 months of the war.

Before the flight home, we were treated to dinner at a local hotel where the events of the day were recapped and several of the veterans spoke about what the day meant to them and the memories it brought back. We then headed to the airport for the flight home. During the flight, the vets have mail call. Family, friends and even strangers write letters to each of the veterans expressing a variety of sentiments but particularly thanks and pride in their service. It was a very emotional experience for them. (Mail call is a secret for the veterans so if you know someone who is going on the flight, don’t tell them!)

The journey home turned out to be a bit of an adventure. We left Reagan on schedule but after flying around Westchester for a while (it was fogged in), we finally landed IN NEWBURGH! That was better than Syracuse which was apparently the first thought. Luckily our pilot, a former Navy man, said no way, and we were cleared to land in Newburgh. We landed there about 9:15, over an hour later than planned. Since they were not expecting us, the anticipated crowds were not there but somehow they managed to recruit as many people as possible from the rental car agents to maintenance staff to restaurant workers to greet and cheer for the vets as we got off the plane. The next leg of the journey involved school buses to drive us back to Westchester. School buses do not go very fast. By the time we got back to Westchester, it was nearly midnight. A small but determined band of well-wishers were there to greet us. All the vets just took it in stride, found their families and headed home after a long but memorable day.

Several things stand out about this day. First, there were the people who gathered at the three airports to greet us as well as the people we encountered at the memorials and the cemetery who just

happened to be there the same day as we. They made a point of seeking out the veterans and thanking as many of them as they could for their service. In particular, I remember one Asian woman near the Lincoln Memorial who could barely speak English but managed

to say “Thank you service” to my veteran.

Second, the people who run this organization are amazing and their only goal is to make this day happen for the veterans. It does not matter how disabled or debilitated a veteran is; if he or she wants to go on this flight, they make it happen for them. I remember one gentleman who was a big guy but had difficulty getting out of a chair, let alone walking. No problem. Two or three of the organizers would help him to his feet and gently guide him into a wheelchair so he could get where he wanted. Another of our veterans had an amputated leg but again, he was respectfully helped into a wheelchair where his 76-year-old guardian could take him to the memorials.

Lastly and most importantly, the veterans themselves. They were all so respectful and thankful for all that was being done for them and it was heartwarming to see the pride they felt at being recognized for their service. I also noticed a bond between them. For the most part, they were all strangers to each other but shared that common experience. As we passed other veterans on the sidewalk or at the memorials, one would often put out a hand to the other and just ask “how are you doing?” It did not matter who was black or Asian or Hispanic or white. They were all just people who had shared an incredible journey.

It was a privilege to be part of this flight and I hope to have the opportunity again. If you know a vet from WWII, Korea or Vietnam, encourage them to look into this organization. There is no cost for a veteran to participate. All they need is the desire to go. Now let’s go out and shop and support our vets!

WOMAN’S CLUB OF WHITE PLAINS’ 62NDANNUAL BEAUX ARTS SHOW

October 16 -18, 2018

Our 62nd annual art exhibition was a huge success with special thanks to the leadership of Arts Chairwoman Barbara Dannenberg and her team of registrants, hostesses and stagers. So many new folks stepped up to the plate as Colleen Fay who computerized entries and Judy Schermerhorn who created new colorful certificates. Installed by Bonnie Ackerman, George our Custodian, Nathaniel Garcia and Henry McCants of the Youth Bureau, the ballroom was ablaze with wonderous and inspiring pieces of art. When all was said and done it was a stunning display of local talents.

Thanks also to our terrific trio of judges: Mrs. Olga Topping – retired art teacher extraordinaire and an artist in her own right; Mrs. Penny Ventura, retired art teacher of WPPS, a graphic artist, photographer and currently digital artist and Cornelia Seckel, founder and publisher of the ART TIMES serving the cultural corridor of the Northeast as an online publication.

Once again, we were regaled by the brilliant piano playing of the most talented students from the John Senakwami Music Institute in Harrison, NY

There were 131 outstanding works of art presented by many new (to our show) artists in all 9 categories. The blue ribbon (first place) works of art will be entered in the Federation Beaux Arts Finale March 3-24, 2019 at the Bronxville Club. All others may be entered in the third show of this group February8-March3, 2019 also at Bronxville NY.

On Thursday evening, Oct.18, 2018, Sue Dougherty, our Club co president with Barbara Dannenberg and Bonnie Ackerman introduced the artists and presented the awards. Thanks to the many Club members and Mr. Joe Sasso, artist and Executive Chef of Sam’s of Gedney Way who generously provided refreshments for the Reception as well as donations from committee members.

The following poem was written by my sister. She swore this happened to her!

A MOMENT OF GRACE

On a summer day On a Himalayan mountain She stood frozen to a rock In the thundering glacial stream.

She hadn’t the courage To set her toe To the bald timber That spanned the chasm. She knew she would plunge. She knew she would perish.

On a far bank Stood an old man.His hand held the hand of a child. He saw the fear in the woman’s eye And he let go the child, Hiked up his robe And waded to the woman. He extended his hand to her.She took it.He waded in the icy water That rose to his chestAnd she footed the satiny log.

They came to the bank together.

They had no words in common. Her eyes showed surprise, Admiration and thanks. His eyes showed pleasure And compassion.Few things could these two shareBut a moment of piercing grace Of gift given, Gift received. In memory it seems like A dance they did, A minuet in time.He saved her life.He stroked her soul And there was no small talk.

A NOTE TO MEMBERSTo those of us who feel that the Marking Committee’s offering items of interest directly to members, I suggest that since the primary members mission of the Club is Philanthropy, the direct contact to members benefits the Philanthropy fund positively because if these items were sold in the shop, the Club would lose 50% of the price as items sold in the shop return only half of the sale price. It is neither crass, impolitic nor embarrassing. Joan O'Shea
