IN CASE OF AN ACCIDENT, MAKE SURE YOU ARE NOT

RESPONSIBLE • Some home owners are not aware of the complications when an

accident happens.

• An injury from a fall can make your life very difficult and costly.

• We keep your best interests at heart.

Did you know...

Whenever fall protection is in place and used correctly, it works!

FALL PROTECTION

Fall protection must be used when it is not possible to use fall

prevention methods. A fall-arrest system, fall restricting device, or

safety net can prevent injury or death in the event of fall.

Fall protection does not eliminate the risk of falling but can reduce

the severity of injury that may result from a fall.

GETTING FAMILIAR

Your roof is one of the most important components of your home; at the end of the day the right choice will save you money and unnecessary ag-gravation. There are many components which make up a Canadian roof, and it is important to make an educated decision when faced with a roof

which needs repair.

Wind Driven Vents

Wind driven turbine vents move more air than flat vents but only when the wind blows. The question: How much air must be moved? An arbitrary rule of thumb that has been adopted into most building codes, calls for 1 sq ft. of vented area for every 300 sq ft. of attic space. This means that a 1,500 sq. ft. attic must have 5 sq. ft. of vent space, one half to be dedicated for air intake in the soffits (pg.10) and the other half for exhaust on the roof. (These can be ridge vents, wind turbines or the flat vents your roofer wants to install.)

Ridge Vents

Roof plains that butt against vertical walls at the end of the shingle course are protected by metal step flashing at least 5” high and 4” wide. When applying the new shingles, each shingle course will be covered by a step flashing. There are two simple rules to follow: each flashing should overlap the one below by a least 4”, and not be visible below the shingle top lap.

Bathroom Exhaust Vent

Using the right exhaust vent for your washroom fan can help to make sure fungus doesn’t have a place to grow. An exhaust fan can remove excess water. Improper ventilation may result in higher energy costs and can cause critical damage to your home in several areas. There is trouble ahead for the poorly ventilated home.

Square Top Roof Vent

In the summer, attics of homes with insufficient ventilation could get as hot as 150°F (66°C). This extreme heat will radiate through the ceiling to cause extreme discomfort and much higher energy costs for air conditioning.

In the winter, poor ventilation results in condensation, as warm air from inside your home mixes with cold air inside your attic. This moisture can be absorbed into the insulation, rendering it useless. Moisture could also cause permanent damage to insulation, roofing, ceilings and framing members.

Valleys

There are several different valley application methods, which include closed, open and woven. For aesthetic reasons, and extra protection you may wish to create a closed valley with an underlayment. Nailing them carefully, ensuring nails are not closer than 6” to the center of the valley.

Synthetic Underlayment

Provides a critical extra layer of protection between your shingles and your roof deck. It helps prevent wind-driven rain (or water from other sources) from infiltrating under your shingles and causing damage to your roof structure or to the inside of your home. It help reduce trapped moisture, provide longer-lasting leak protection.

Asphalt Felt Plain

Underlayment application should be done on low slope roofs. Fiberglass shingles require an asphalt felt underlayment when applied on a roof with a slope less than 8/12 (pg. 11). Class “A” Fire Resistance rating is achieved only with the installation of felt underlayment.

Ice and Water Protector

This rubberized underlayment acts as an extra defense against ice dams. For ideal protection, Ice and Weather Shield should extend up, under the valleys and around the skylights, dormers or any other critical areas. It has a sticky back surface covered with a release film, which makes installation easy.

Chimney Flashing

Chimney flashing is a construction detail used to seal gaps and protect joints in a building from water penetration. The joints are created by the intersection of the roof and chimney.

Step-Flashing

Roof plains that butt against vertical walls at the end of the shingle course are protected by metal step flashing at least5” high and 4” wide. When applying the new shingles, each shingle course will be covered by a step flashing. There aretwo simple rules to follow: each flashing should overlap the one below by a least 4”, and not be visible below the shingle top lap.

Wall Flashing

Wall flashing is an exposed piece of sheet metal such as aluminum, copper, painted or galvanized steel. It is installed to prevent the passage of water into the structure from an angle or joint.

Flexing Base Flashing

Prevents leaks and makes for a better finish around plumbing vents.

Furnace Vent

The flashing for a furnace vent system should be done by a professional furnace installer.

Electric Turbine

Power ventilator removes hot, humid air from roof spaces at an exhaust rate equivalent to about four domestic wind turbines. The operation of the electrical turbine is controlled through a thermostat.

Drip Edge

The drip edge is a metal edging that is installed on the bottom part of the eaves where water drips off the roof. ProfessionalRoofers.com recommends to install drip edge when we have a gap within eaves and roof or when the roof is under 3/12.

Skylight

Skylights are one of the best ways to illuminate or bring a natural light into an area.

Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding is an alternative for aluminum siding. It is the most commonly installed exterior cladding for residential construction in USA and in Canada.

Fascia

The fascia is a board attached to the end of the roof rafters or wall. The fascia board normally holds the eavestroughs in place.

Soffit

Soffits normally have holes providing air circulation to the attic roof and overhanging space within the wall and eavestroughs.

Eavestroughs & Downpipes

Eavestroughs collect the water from your roof and keep the water away from your foundation.

The downpipes collect the water from your eavestroughs.

Valley flashings are usually categorized as open or closed. The easiest way to determine if you currently have a roof with open or closed valleys is that open valleys are visible when completed, the latter is not.

A good contractor can install both types of valleys, however, closed valleys are standard in most installations.

Open valleys with or without metal are less expensive and are inferior quality than closed metal valleys.

A contractor can save between $150.00 – $500.00 by installing an open valley. Closed metal valleys, however, offer double protection for your roof, last longer, and look better.

SHINGLES

What Are They?

Shingles are your roof’s front line against environmental damage. The type of shingle you select is a large contributing factor to how long your roof will last. For example, premium shingles with heavy duty felt or fibreglass mats and thicker asphalt with granule coatings will provide a longer roof life.

There are approximately sixty different types of shingles and slate materials, which is why it is crucial for your roof to be professionally analyzed before any decisions are made.

Different companies use customized names for the same shingles, making it difficult to compare the different types. Your roofing contractor should be able to provide you with a detailed list of shingles which are most appropriate for your roof.

Once you have made a decision on the type of shingle, the next step is selecting the right colour to complement the overall look of your home.

Commonly Used Shingles

Generally, shingles that are used in Canada are fibreglass based shingles.

Fibreglass shingles are thinner, lighter, and carry a better fire rating than organic shingles. The ceramic granules in fibreglass shingles protect the shingles from the sun. These shingles are more flexible, as well, they maintain flexibility in colder weather, allowing for a higher wind resistance.

SHINGLE WARNING SIGNS

Bare Spots

Bare spots occur when the protective granular surface of shingles wears off as the asphalt begins to harden over time. Bare spots are often accompanied by fine cracks on the shingles’ surface and by the accumulation of granules in the gutters.

Broken Shingles

Broken shingles can be caused by extreme wind conditions and snow removal. Since the functional purpose of shingles is to shed water, having broken, torn or missing pieces creates obvious entry points for water. This is a huge issue on low slope roofs where run-off is slower and at the peaks of the roof where shingles are the most vulnerable to high winds.

Clawing

Clawing is the curling under of the shingles bottom edge and is part of the normal aging process of shingles. The bulge created is vulnerable to damage by wind action, hail and ice.

Buckling

Buckling is a visible distortion or waviness in the shingles, and usually runs in a straight line up the roof slope. Shingle tabs become exposed to wind and can be torn off. Very often, the problem is warping in the roof deck caused by poor attic ventilation. The use of thinner than recommended plywoods and other non-plywood materials adds to the problem.

Sun Exposure

The sun has many effects on the roofing system and causes deterioration. Always check the South and West exposure to see how bad the roof truly is. The North and East are usually one year behind but should be changed at the same time as the rest of the roof.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT ROOFER

Roofs are not all the same. They are constructed in may shapes, sizes, slopes, and with many other variables. These variations make it important to choose a knowledgeable contractor to assess your roof requirement without overcharging.

Did you know it’s not an automatic requirement to have tar paper covering the whole roof, flashing replacement, drip edge, or larger vents when fixing roofs? An honest contractor will suggest some of these extra items only when required.

Ask family members, friends, or neighbours who’ve had their roofs done. They can tell you about the dependability of the contractors they worked with the quality of the work, and their overall experience with the company.

Remember:

You won’t offend reputable firms with questions. If a contractor doesn’t seem to know much about the technical details of the job or doesn’t want to talk about them, the contractor may not be a right match for your needs!

Always ensure your roofers are harnessed and safe. They should always deliver what is agreed upon on the working contract. Here is an example of unsafe workers and no underlayment where there should be.

ASKING QUESTIONS

Don’t Forget:

Ask for references from past customers. Check with the Better Business Bureau for complaints against the contractor. Ask the contractors for their business license number and check for the contractors property damage insurance and worker’s compensation.

When deciding on which roofing company to use, be sure to compare apples to apples and don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions, such as:

How long have you been in business?

Do you have a permanent location? Where is it?

Will you use your own labourers for the work or will you sub-contract all or part of

the job? Are you available 24 hours in case of a roofing emergency?

How do you clean up, particularly the method of disposal?

What work schedule will you follow?

What kind of warranty do you offer and what does it cover?

Do you carry workers compensation and liability insurance?

Will you provide a written contract?

CUTTING CORNERS

How a Roofing Contractor Can Cut Corners Without You Noticing

You need a knowledgeable and honest contractor to assess your roofing requirements. Solid roofing canbe provided relatively inexpensively without adding unnecessary extras. Tar paper covering the whole roof, flashing replacement, drip edge, or larger vents are not always necessary. Some unscrupulous contractors add these extra items to increase their profits. An honest contractor will suggest these items only if necessary.

Uxdu Contracting, ProfessionalRoofers.com can install both types of valleys, however, closed metal valleys are standard in all of their installations.accurately and quickly measure your roof’s angle.

Fly By Night

An established roofing contractor has a reputation to protect. Operating out of a fixed address in the community, a roofing contractor relies primarily on word-of-mouth to attract business.

However, there are more than 200 roofing companies in Southern Ontario that operate out of the back of a truck with a cell phone.

Most of these companies are untraceable and virtually insolvent.

LICENSES A roofing contractor must have a valid municipal license and be properly

insured to work on your roof. If a contractor that is not licensed or properly insured does a faulty installation, you may be forced to redo the roof with a properly

licensed and insured contractor.

Uxdu Contracting, ProfessionalRoofers.com maintains excellent relationships with all of their suppliers and shingle manufacturers. This gives them significant leverage to negotiate your claim for the material failure in the unlikely event that this is necessary, in addition, they have staff on call 24 hours a day throughout the year to honour their warranties.

Deposits & Payments

An established contractor that is in sound financial condition should not ask you for a deposit in advance of the work. However, the contractor should provide you with an itemized contract, explain it to you, and be willing to answer your questions. Payment should only be requested after the job has been completed to your satisfaction.

A supplier to one of these companies that encounters difficulty collecting for materials may attempt to recover the cost of the materials directly from you, the homeowner. It is therefore important for you to:

Find out about the track record and reputation of your contractor. Uxdu Contracting, ProfessionalRoofers.com has operated out of the same premises for many years, is financially sound, has an excellent track record, and has skilled personnel who are responsible to your needs.

Uxdu Contracting, ProfessionalRoofers.com carries both forms of insurance.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS 7. When do I have to use ice & water shields? Answer: Yes we do. We have a license and we present it to you when we present our quotation. 8. When do I have to replace my wall flashing?

Answer: When it begins to come away from the walls, bricks or other surfaces. In most cases the original wall flashing is easily restorable.

9. What is the difference between straight wall flashingand step wall flashing?

Answer: Step wall flashing is far more efficient and reliable because it follows the tuck pointing (mortar between bricks) more closely. It adheres to the contours of your bricks and mortar. Step wall flashing is more expensive and is known to last many years longer than straight wall flashing.

10. What is the best type of shingle for my type of roof?

Answer: There are approximately sixty different types of shingles and slate materials. Durability ranges from ten years to a lifetime. It is crucial that your roof be professionally analyzed before any recommendations are made.

11. Do I need vents? How many should I have?

Answer: Yes. We recommend most houses use vents. One vent is needed for every three hundred square feet of roofing. You can either use turbine vents or static vents. In most cases for every one turbine vent, you’ll require five static vents to achieve the same circulation.

13. Do I need a drip edge?

Answer: Yes. We recommend using a drip edge when your roof is under 4/12 pitch or if you have a gap between your roof and your eavestrough.

12. What do vents actually do?

Answer: Vents help to circulate air in the attic, help plywood on your roof breathe better and they remove condensation from the attic.

THE IKO STORY

ROOF BUYING GUIDE10 ROOF BUYING GUIDE10

The IKO StoryFounded in 1951, IKO began as a small manufacturing plant inindustrial Calgary. A family-owned enterprise, we madewaterproofing materials the old-fashioned way: by soaking kraftpaper with asphalt and by applying asphalt to paper-based felt. There was an immediate demand for our products. With the post-

World War II building boom, young families flocked to the suburbs to fulfill their dream ofhomeownership. We knew they deserved the very best roofing materials so just two years afteropening, we introduced rolled roofing and later, asphalt shingles.

Customers loved our high-quality shingles. We expanded across Canada, continuously investing in ouremployees and technology to improve our products and modernize ourbusiness. By the late 1970's, our operations extended throughout Europeand the U.S.We put engineering and state-of-the-art technology into every shingle.Although invisible to most people, roofing products have evolveddramatically. Approximately 25 years ago, fiberglass started becomingthe shingle mat of choice. For select shingles, we modified our asphalt tomake our shingles more pliable and durable. We added special granulesto help protect roofs from the damage of UV light. And we introducedcomputer-aided color design to increase selection and enhance thebeauty of our shingles.

At IKO, we believe the success and longevity of our company is attributed to three keyingredients: Top quality products, continuous innovation and state-of-the-art manufacturingfacilities. When the market demanded a more compelling design to the traditional three-tab shingle, IKO wasamong the first to produce some of the world's finest laminated and architectural-style shingles. Ourvariety of contemporary shingles allows our customers to select the shingle that suits their individualneed and style. As roofing specialists, we stick with what we do best - roofing. What's more, we are verticallyintegrated, which means we have control over the entire manufacturing process - from the rawmaterials to the finished product. You can be assured that IKO is as responsible for the raw materialsas the final product, allowing us to provide exceptional quality you can count on. Quality we believeour competitors simply cannot match.

Our strength is our commitment to quality and our passion for setting the standard in theindustry.A family-owned company now for three generations, IKO intends to be around for many more. Ourproducts are found on distinctive residential, commercial and engineering structures in more than 50countries. We operate over 20 manufacturing plants globally. In fact, at a time when othermanufacturers are cutting back, our business is going strong. We plan to invest in additional laminatedshingle production capacity and are actively pursuing opening new manufacturing facilities.

ROOF DECK PROTECTIONSheathing provides a flat surface that adds a certain amount of stability to a roof, while also creating the first layer of defense from the elements. Since roof decking tends to be made from wood and wood can rot when mixed with moisture and heat, after being laid, this layer of defense should be protected quite quickly with waterproofing membranes. It is one more layer of protection and stability for a roof, and an incredibly important part of the roofing process, as roof decking provides the foundation for all other protective membranes and materials like shingles, flashing, or membranes to be applied. It must therefore be strong enough to support the materials that are attached to it, and durable enough to cope with the stresses of the elements and its constant use. If applied correctly, will significantly increase the rigidity and strength of your roof.

Asphalt Felt PlainIs made of a resilient, high-strength cellulose fiber mat that has been saturated with premium waterproofing bitumen to offer a superior building material that’s designed specifically for residential roofs.

StormtiteIs more resistant to tearing and shredding when installers walk on it. Plus it’s coated top and bottom with tough polyolefin for superior weather-resistance with a slip-resistant surface.

Ice Water StormShieldIt is used for waterproofing under shingled roofs preventing water penetration due to ice dams or wind-driven rain. It can also be used as an underlayment around chimneys, dormers, vent stacks, skylights and other roof-top structures or apertures, around doors and windows.

ROOF DECK PROTECTION

Shingle-MateQuality roof deck protection (often referred to as “tar paper” or “felt”) provides an extra layer of protection between your shingles and your roof deck. It helps prevent wind-driven rain (or water from other sources) from infiltrating under your shingles and causing damage to your roof structure or the inside of your home.

Roofers SelectAn underlayment with highperformance features which exceed No. 15 organic felt and are comparable to No. 30organic felt.

Gaf Deck ArmourIt provides a critical extra layer ofprotection between your shingles and your roof deck — to help prevent wind-driven rain (or water from other sources) from infiltrating under your shingles and causing damage to your roof structure or to the inside of your home.

Diamond DeckIs a synthetic, scrim-reinforced, water-resistant underlayment that can be used beneath shingle, shake, metal or slate roofing. Felt underlayment can wrinkle when it becomes wet and “telegraph” those wrinkles through to the shingles applied over it. Diamond Deck eliminates this problem.

Weather WatchCreate a seal that helps keep water out at the most vulnerable areas of your roof (at the eaves and rakes, in valleys, around chimneys, etc.).

Winter GuardWinter Guard is a composite material of asphalt polymers, formed into a rolled sheet. The asphalt makes it vapor-tight, and the polymers make the asphalt elastic and sticky. This protective barrier is able to stretch and seal around nails driven through it.

POLYURETHANE ROOF SYSTEMS

Flat Roof System Spray Foam

A home that has incorporated a flat roof is bound to lose a lot of heat, and may also be prone to leaking, which in turn deteriorates materials in the house. It goes without saying that the best way to deal with this is through insulation. Before that, it is always important to know if your home falls under the flat roof category.

What is Spray polyurethane foam (SPF)?

• Environmentally friendly, contains no formaldehyde or ozone depleting chemicals, saves energy, and reducing global warming gases.• One of the most effective forms of insulation.• Offers one of the highest R-values per inch.• Air seals the entire building envelope.• Can act as both an air and a vapour barrier.• Seamless, watertight and lightweight.• Closed cell SPF adds structural strength and glues a building together, thereby making it more resistant to racking events, such as hurricanes and high winds.• Helps control moisture and condensation, which prevents fungi or mould growth.• SPF will not sag or settle.• HVAC equipment can be down-sized, thereby reducing construction cots

Did you know...

If your attic is not properly insulated, you could be losing money. Insulating a roof is an effective way to minimize heat loss and reduce heating bills.

FLAT ROOF

Modern flat roofs tend to use a continuous membrane covering which can better resist pools of standing water. These membranes are applied as a continuous sheet where possible, though sealants and adhesives are available to allow for bonding multiple sheets and dealing with structures penetrating the roof surface.

A flat roof is a type of covering of a building. In contrast to the sloped form of a roof, a flat roof is horizontal or nearly horizontal. Materials that cover flat roofs should allow the water to run off freely from a very slight incline.

Traditionally flat roofs would use a tar and gravel based surface which, as long as there was not pooling of water, was sufficient to prevent penetration. However, these surfaces would tend to fail in colder climates, where ice dams and the like could block the flow of water. Similarly, they tend to be sensitive to sagging of the roof, thus reversing the subtle grading of the surface.

FLAT ROOF

Modern architects often viewed the flat roof as a living area.

Flat roofs tend to be sensitive to human traffic. Anything which produces a crack or puncture in the surface can quite readily lead to leaks. It is thus not generally advisable to use a flat roof as a living area unless steps are taken to protect the roofing membrane from those using the area, for example, by building a wooden deck over the surface or using paving stones or similar materials to protect the roof membrane.

The life expectancy of a flat roof can be proportional to the maintenance done on it. Some assessors use 10 years as an average life cycle, although this is dependent on the type of flat roof system in place.

All roofs should be inspected semi-annually and after major storms

Hi Roberto,

I am writing to tell you of the great job Oscar and his crew did on my roof today.

The quality of materials and workmanship was excellent, and the entire job was finished in record time.

Everything that was done was shown and explained to me and my satisfaction is 100%. Several of my neighbours and friends have also inquired about you and an estimate and I have highly recommended you. Your company and workers truly are Professional Roofers!

Thanks again,Keep up the great work!

Good morning,

It’s been about three months since my new roof was put in place and I have to say that I’m extremely pleased with the outcome. Your crew of workers were exceptional and professional and kind.

I’ve been providing your company’s name anytime that someone I know needs a new roof. So far you’ve done two roofs of friends of mine. I will continue to offer your company as a reference. You’ll be getting two additional quotes from two more friends of mine.

Thank you for all your hard work, and it was worth every penny. Kind regards, Lou Bolarinho

TESTIMONIALS

Good morning,

Please accept my sincere thanks for the professional manner in which you and your crew installed my roof this past month.

You provided timely service, quality materials and outstanding workmanship. Your crew arrived early in the morning and worked late into the evening in order to complete the job in one day.

Furthermore, your price was highly competitive with the other quotes I received for the job.

My neighbours have commented to me that the roof looks fantastic.

I would highly recommend Uxdu Contracting, ProfessionalRoofers.com for all roofing needs.

Thanks again,Rick Whiler, MBA, CA

Sunny Mak January 20, 20061032 Spring Water Crescent

Mississauga, Ontario

To Whom It May Concern, My name is Sunny Mak. I lived at 1032 Spring Water Crescent. I hired a company named Blackstar Roofing Ltd. on October 19, 2005 to do my roof. This company provided us, with 10 years warranty on labour and 25 years on materials and charged us, for the completed job $4,500. Approximately three weeks after the roof was done, we began having leaking problems inside our house due to bad installation by Blackstar Roofing. After trying to get a hold of them, we finally did and they promised to come in a week to fix it. After three months of trying, they never showed up. We have decided to pay another company to repair our roof. Finally in the middle of winter, we found a responsible and quick roofing company who was willing to repair our roof because we realized that there are not many companies that are working during winter time and is when we needed the most. Thanks to ProfessionalRoofers.com, as their logo says, our problems are solved in no time. They were willing to repair our roof even though they did not get the job in the first place, plus they provided us a 10 years service. After we discussed our problem with the owner of Uxdu Contracting, ProfessionalRoofers.com,we realized that over the winter time they received over 500 calls from people in regards to roofing problems similar to the one we had, when homeowners are not able to get a hold of their previous roofing contractors.

Sincerely yours,Sunny Mak
