DAY 1: Friday 1st November, 2019

HOME - MILDURA

Welcome to our 10 day tour to South Austral ia ’s Yorke and Eyre Peninsulas. After personal pick up from home, we travel via the Westgate Bridge to Ballarat then join the Sunraysia Highway through the Pyrenees Ranges to Donald. We’ll stop here for our lunch break. This afternoon we continue through the Wimmera-Mallee region arriving in Mildura late afternoon.

DAY 2: Saturday 2nd November, 2019

MILDURA - CLARE

After a hearty breakfast we make our way into South Australia. From Waikerie we head through the historic river port of Morgan to another historic town, Burra, classified by the National Trust. Copper from Burra’s “Monster Mine” saved South Australia from bankruptcy in the 1840’s. It was the

largest metal mine in the country employing 1,000 people. Cornish and Welsh miners flocked to Burra to work for South Australian Mining Association and some set up homes in the dugouts hewn out of the banks of the Burra Creek. After a tour of this historical town we travel onto Clare. Our overnight stay is at the delightful Clare Country Club, an award winning p roper ty w i th sp lend id v iews overlooking lush fairways of the adjacent golf course and the sparkling waters of Inchiquin Lake. DAY 3: Sunday 3rd November, 2019

CLARE - PORT PIRIE

This morning we drive to Ardrossan on the east coast of the Yorke Peninsula. The beautiful, blue waters of the Gulf St Vincent contrast with the patchwork of grain fields that produce the world's best barley and abundant crops of other cereals, such as wheat and oats. At Ardrossan we stop to enjoy gulf views from the top of the cliffs on which the town is built before visiting the Ardrossan Museum. Next stop is Minlaton. We can see the Harry Butler

Memorial established in the town to commemorate the local aviation pioneer who flew his Bristol Fighter monoplane in France and Australia. His plane, which is believed to be the only one of its kind left anywhere in the world, is on display. From here we head north through Maitland and onto Moonta – a

town that promotes itself as “Australia’s little Cornwall”. The ceiling at the Moonta Railway Station is an interesting example of a pressed metal ceiling, which was commonplace at the time of construction and well worth a look. We’ll then travel through Kadina and Port Broughton to arrive at our overnight destination of Port Pirie.

DAY 4: Monday 4th November, 2019

PORT PIRIE - PORT LINCOLN

Departing Port Pirie we begin our touring on the Eyre Peninsula. We’ll shortly pass through Port Augusta, the "Crossroads of Australia”.

Located at the very top of the Spencer Gulf, it is at the junction for major trans-cont inenta l t ranspor t serv ices. Passenger Rail services the Indian Pacific travelling between Sydney and Perth and the Ghan which serves Alice Springs and Darwin, both stop at Port Augusta, as do the main east west and

north south highways. Then it’s on to Whyalla - the Cuttlefish Capital of the World!! The pristine waters of the Gulf have also enabled the Eyre Peninsula to produce some of the best Oysters in Australia. Further south at Cowell, we’ll visit Turners Oysters & Seafood to learn more about oyster farming and perhaps even sample an oyster or two. After lunch, we’ll continue along the Lincoln Highway stopping at Tumby Bay to admire the stunning artwork on the town’s wheat silo, en route to Port Lincoln, our base for the next three nights. DAY 5: Tuesday 5th November, 2019

MELBOURNE CUP IN PORT LINCOLN

This morning our local tour guide joins us for a tour of the area. Port Lincoln is located on one of the world’s largest protected natural

harbours. Boston Bay stretches from the tip of the Port Lincoln National Park to Point Boston and covers an area more than 3½ times the size of Sydney Harbour.

Port Lincoln was discovered by Matthew Flinders, under his commission by the

British Admiralty to chart Australia’s unexplored coastline. He arrived in Boston Bay in February 1802 and named the spot Port Lincoln after his native Lincolnshire in England. This is the home town of the family who own the mighty Makybe Diva – the only horse to ever win 3 Melbourne Cups!! On our tour, we will see a statue of the horse in the centre of the town. We see the massive grain silos and hear all about the multi-million dollar fishing industry that Port Lincoln is home to. After saying farewell to our guide, we return to our hotel to freshen up and don our hats for the special Melbourne Cup Luncheon. On arrival we are treated to an included glass of champagne before enjoying a scrumptious buffet lunch. There will be a chance for some last minute punting and sweeps before the big race. We have the remainder of the day to enjoy the festivities. After a fun and hopefully profitable day we have time to freshen up before a light supper.

DAY 6: Wednesday 6th November, 2019

BOSTON BAY AND PORT LINCOLN

We have another great day planned. Our first interesting visit is to the Fresh Fish Place where we take the Seafood Lovers tour of the multi fish species processing factory. They process seafood caught by the local fishermen spread around Eyre Peninsula’s vast coastline. We have some free time in the main precinct to explore the shops. Our lunch venue today is the Marina Hotel, then this afternoon we join Adventure Bay Charters to learn more about the history of the fishing industry in Port Lincoln. This tour covers no more than 900m on a round trip and can be done from the comfort of the coach or a walk. Following this tour we have the chance of seafood tastings as we cruise the canals of the Lincoln Cove Marina, Porter Bay, Boston Bay, Port Lincoln National Park and Boston Island. Within Boston Bay there are aquaculture sites for king fish, tuna and mussels. Back on dry land, we make our way back to the hotel.

DAY 7: Thursday 7th November, 2019

PORT LINCOLN - PORT AUGUSTA

We farewell our hosts and depart Port Lincoln. Some of the most rugged and dramatic coastline on the Eyre Peninsula is along the west

coast and that’s where we are headed today. We look at the pretty town of Coffin Bay, located on the shores of one of the most beautiful estuaries in Australia and surrounded by National and Conservation Parks. We enjoy a brief stop here before continuing north along the Flinders Highway to Elliston.

This really is a stunning area, particularly the appropriately named Great Ocean View – a section of cliff top roadway with some remarkable views of the Great Australian Bight and Waterloo Bay.

Once in Elliston, a local will join us to show us the beautiful coastline and tell us some of the history about the area, then we’ll enjoy an early BBQ lunch. This afternoon we travel to Kyancutta, join the Eyre Highway and head east, taking us to our overnight stop in Port Augusta.

DAY 8: Friday 8th November, 2019

PORT AUGUSTA - ADELAIDE

This morning we depart Port Augusta and start our journey towards Adelaide. We stop along the way to visit Bungaree Station. It was

established in 1841, becoming the headquarters to an extensive sheep station with 100 thousand merino sheep by the 1880s. Today, some 160 years later, it is an efficient mixed farm run by the descendants of the original founder, G.C. Hawker. Consequently Bungaree Station is not a museum, but rather a

living record of rural Australia since 1841. We enjoy a guided tour with a member of the family who will give us a wonderful insight into 19th century station life. We will visit sites which include St Michael’s Church and Cemetery, the Homestead gardens and the Station Store. We also have lunch here. This afternoon we arrive in Adelaide with plenty of time to relax and settle into our overnight accommodation.

DAY 9: Saturday 9th November, 2019

ADELAIDE - MT GAMBIER

Our travels this morning take us along the Coorong National Park stopping at Kingston South East for lunch. This afternoon we drive via the seaside towns of Beachport and Robe. On arrival into Mt Gambier we take in the local sights, including a visit to Blue Lake and Umpherston Cave before settling into our accommodation for the night.

DAY 10: Sunday 10th November, 2019

MT GAMBIER - HOME

All good things must come to an end and so must our holiday. Following an early breakfast, we begin our journey back to Melbourne. We cross over the border through Dartmoor and join the coast through Warrnambool to Camperdown. Camperdown sits on the great volcanic plain of Victoria’s Western District and is surrounded by crater lakes and volcanic cones. As we cross the ‘great volcanic plain’ we

travel alongside miles of fascinating dry-stone walls which are a feature of the countryside and known as the stony rises. The walls were built in the 1860’s by highly skilled ‘wallers’ from Ireland and Scotland. We also pass by many crater lakes, some more salty than the sea. We arrive at Geelong mid-

afternoon and continue on to Melbourne. As usual, our chauffeurs will deliver us to our front doors to complete a wonderful holiday!
