farmer-friendly philosophy

repowering rural america

Geronimo was founded with deep roots in agriculture and an understanding and re-

spect for farming practices. Geronimo’s farmer-friendly development approach en-

sures that each of our projects will benefit the local area for generations to come.

Our landowner partners are compensated fairly and equally. We look to hire locally in

the communities we work with, and we work closely with our landowners and their

neighbors during the siting process to ensure that our projects are well received by

the community to yield sustaining support for the long term operation of the project.

While rural areas of our country are battling urban sprawl and economic pressures,

Geronimo is committed to building projects that can provide the opportunities

needed to repower rural American communities throughout the life of the project.

We establish local offices and maintain interaction with key stakeholders and local

governments, and keep landowners informed on the project status through regular

meetings, update letters, and siting workshops.

community-driven approach

We seek to leave the world we touch in a better place than it was before we touched it: environmentally, through the

deployment of clean and renewable energy; in our communities, through economic development; for our employees,

through personal improvement and pride in what we do; and for our shareholders, through profitable operations.

correctly and will

of the project.

The promises made by Geronimo to help our community have exceeded what we ever could have hoped.

our story

our roots Geronimo’s founder, Noel Rahn, grew up farming in southwest Minnesota and still actively farms

there with his family today. Noel and his family were approached in 2003 to be part of a wind

farm development on their land. Noel, a successful investor aided by his ability to see long-term

trends, saw an opportunity in wind energy to help reignite economic growth in rural America.

beginningsGeronimo started under the name The Rahn Group, developing its first wind farm on some of

Noel’s farmland in southwest Minnesota in 2005. Working with the local government, neigh-

bors, and community leaders, Geronimo made the Odin Wind Farm a quick success; we signed

a Power Purchase Agreement with Missouri River Energy Services of Sioux Falls, South Dakota

for the output of the project. With the site developed and the PPA with Missouri River signed,

Geronimo attracted Edison Mission as a partner for the project.

Shortly after the success of the Odin Wind Farm, Geronimo was approached by Missouri River

about replicating it at a site that Missouri River was developing in Marshall, Minnesota. Geron-

imo was able to finish the development of the Marshall Wind Farm in a matter of months,

quickly securing a second off-take agreement with Missouri River, and partnering with John

Deere Renewables to bring the project to completion.

rapid growthHaving gone through the development process and learning curve associated with our first few

developments, we gained experience and knowledge in what it takes to bring a project from

conception to completion. Since our modest beginnings, we have invested aggressively in our

business and are currently developing three gigawatts of projects throughout the Midwest.

We have also added considerably to the human capital in our organization. Geronimo’s team

continues to expand its expertise through the recruitment of professionals experienced in rural

economic development, meteorology, real estate, environmental policy, land use regulation,

and finance. Our growth was accelerated in 2009 when we struck a strategic partnership with

Enel Green Power, a global leading generator of renewable energy.

transition into solarIn 2013 Geronimo expanded its capabilities to include solar development in order to better

meet its customers’ needs. Due to the versatile development opportunities solar provides, as

well as its nearly 100% on-peak power production, solar provides the marketplace with a clean

alternative to traditional peaking facilities and capacity improvements. Geronimo offers both

utility-scale ground-mounted solar projects and commercial portfolio development.

Keeping in line with our farmer friendly practices, we develop our projects

with transparency and honesty. We have found that a project has a much

higher probability of success when community support is established from

the onset of the project. We start each project with a community meeting

to educate the footprint landowners and invite them to be involved. We

keep them updated on the project’s progress through annual—or, in some

cases, monthly—meetings, as well as update letters and newsletters.

As the development process proceeds and the project is put before county and

state commissions, landowners are invited to attend those meetings or learn of

their results from the website or from their project manager.

Geronimo strives to benefit the communities we work in by establishing a tax-

exempt, Private Foundation 501(c)(3) Community Fund for every project we de-

velop. The fund is wholly under the control of designated community members to

be spent in whatever charitable way the community might need.

wind

developing wind in the midwestGeronimo develops wind farms throughout the midwest, with the majority of our projects

being in the upper midwest region, where there is both a robust wind resource and re-

ceptive, entrepreneurial communities. This combination is crucial for the creation of wind

energy, and allows Geronimo to deliver very low cost energy to customers across America.

transmission access and deliverability

operating projects

Geronimo focuses on locating areas with significant wind resources and suitable trans-

mission access. Geronimo’s wind projects are appropriately scaled to complement the

available transmission capacity in the area, thus offering our customers access to inex-

pensive wind power with lessened risks of curtailment and depressed market pricing due

to transmission constraints.

Geronimo has developed and constructed three wind farms to date:

solar

ground-mounted development commercial portfolio developmentGeronimo works with commercial and industrial building owners to market their

national portfolio of properties as an energy portfolio. Due to the complexity and

dynamics of the energy market, having a single energy marketing professional

represent the portfolio provides economies of scale and efficient utilization of

staff resources.

Geronimo will actively manage the client’s portfolio and bid into energy RFPs, Stan-

dard Offer contracts, and other energy market opportunities. Financial thresholds

are established at the beginning of the relationship in order to allow the energy

marketing team to quickly respond to opportunities that arise in the market while

also ensuring that the customer receives an expected return.

Upon successful award, Geronimo will leverage its financial partner, Enel Green

Power, to procure, design, and install the systems utilizing the most current tech-

nology and design practices to maximize the project performance.

Geronimo works with farmers and landowners to develop distributed solar facilities that

provide a clean and competitive alternative to traditional fossil fuel resources. Unlike resi-

dential solar, which offsets consumption at a home or business, Geronimo sells the energy

and capacity directly to utilities and transmission providers in the wholesale energy market.

Geronimo uses the best technology available to maximize efficiency and create competitive,

marketable projects.

A typical project will be located near a load center such as a small town or large industrial

facility. This allows the energy to be consumed directly by the community and avoid the

costs of the transmission network while also reducing line loss and increasing grid reliability.

Geronimo staff works with landowners to maximize the value of their property by increasing

rents, diversifying income streams, and providing a predictable long term revenue source.

The solar market has experienced exponential growth in the US as installed costs continue to decline and energy markets move towards market-based pricing structures that value the on-peak power solar provides.

With nearly 100% on-peak power production, solar is providing the marketplace with a clean alternative to traditional peaking facilities and capacity improvements.

our strategic partnerIn 2009, Geronimo and Enel Green Power formed a strategic partnership to help Geronimo bring its development pipeline

to fruition. Enel’s vast experience and technical expertise in energy development significantly improves Geronimo’s ability to

address and manage the challenges that can arise during the development, financing, construction and operation of our wind

farms. Geronimo and Enel Green Power work closely together on all strategy, project development and bidding activities to

ensure that each of our wind farms has the necessary resources and support to succeed.
