ABSTRACT
We update and revise the serpentine affinity database of Safford et al. (2005), which documents levels ofplant taxon association with ultramafic (‘‘serpentine’’) substrates in the California flora. The revised databasereflects recent taxonomic changes consistent with the second edition of the Jepson Manual (TJM2) and morerecent updates to the Jepson eFlora, and includes additional species that were not previously documented asserpentine associates. We also include serpentine-associated species that have been described since thepublication of TJM2 and are not yet incorporated in the eFlora. A number of taxa were removed from theSafford et al. (2005) database due to new ecological information or taxonomic changes. As before, the newdatabase presents information on rarity, geographic distribution, taxonomy, and lifeform. Based on our newdatabase numbers and TJM2’s list of California endemic species, the percentage of California endemic fullspecies that are þ/ restricted to ultramafic substrates has risen to 14.7%. Of 255 total endemic taxa in ourdatabase (including strict and ‘‘broad’’ endemics), 148 (c. 60%) come from only ten plant families, concentrated mostly in one or two genera per family. The North Coast and Klamath Ranges continue tosupport more serpentine endemics than the rest of the State combined. The previous version of the databasehas been widely used in biodiversity research and conservation management, and we hope that this improvedand updated version will prove as valuable.
Key Words: California flora, edaphic, endemics, serpentine, ultramafic.
Soils derived from ultramafic parent materials–often referred to as ‘‘serpentine’’–support a greatdiversity of plant life in California. Serpentine soilsare generally ecologically stressful environmentsbecause they are poor in plant macronutrients, havehigh magnesium : calcium ratios, and contain toxicheavy metals (Alexander et al. 2007). Serpentineenvironments support high levels of native plantdiversity partly because they are less likely to supportthe (often non-native) dominant species that com-petitively exclude other plants on more fertilesubstrates (Brooks 1987). In addition, the stressfulenvironment of serpentine leads to high levels ofendemism. While serpentine soils occupy less than1.5% of California’s geographic area (Harrison et al.2000), a high number of California’s endemic plantspecies are partially or entirely restricted to serpen-tine soils (described below, also see Safford et al.2005; Safford 2011). Understanding the plant diver-sity associated with serpentine environments isimportant for facilitating research into basic ecolog-ical and evolutionary questions (of which there is along history in California serpentine; Harrison andRajakaruna 2011), as well as for informing manage-ment decisions involving landscapes, natural distur-bances, and conservation (Safford and Harrison2004, 2008).
To this point, the serpentine endemism databaseof Safford et al. (2005) has provided the mostcomprehensive documentation of plant species affin-
ities for serpentine substrates in California. Thisdatabase assigns plant taxa a ranking representingtheir degree of specialization to serpentine soils basedon herbarium records, botanical descriptions, fielddata, expert opinion, and published literature. Thedatabase has been widely used for a variety ofpurposes since its publication. The rankings havebeen cited by numerous ecological and evolutionarystudies, such as research on the evolutionary originsof serpentine adaptation (Anacker et al. 2010),biogeographic considerations of plant diversity andendemism in the California flora (Harrison et al.2006; Burge et al. 2011), autoecological studies ofserpentine species (Eckert 2006), and studies ofmycorrhizae on serpentine soils (Southworth et al.2014). The serpentine affinity rankings have beenintegrated into the CalFlora (http://www.calflora.org) web interface—a database on Californiaplants—where the rankings are displayed on thepages of serpentine-associated species. The serpen-tine database has also been used by land managers inconservation planning, environmental assessmentsand impact statements, and resource managementplans.
METHODS
Our understanding of the systematics and ecologyof the California flora has expanded substantiallysince the earlier version of this database was

published. Here, we provide a revised version of thedatabase (Appendix 1; Supplemental Table 1), withnomenclature updated to reflect The Jepson Manual,2nd edition (TJM2; Baldwin et al. 2012) and thenagain using the most recent Jepson eFlora (mostrecent version accessed November 18, 2019; JepsonFlora Project 2019). This contribution follows onSafford (2011), which provided a lay person’ssummary of the status of the endemism databasejust as TJM2 was being prepared for press. Thegeneral patterns discussed in Safford (2011) are stillvalid, but it was important to incorporate thepublished results from Baldwin et al. (2012) and themost recent Jepson eFlora (Jepson Flora Project2019), and to provide a completely revised version ofthe database itself, which was not part of Safford(2011).
In the current database (Appendix 1), we haveadded numerous additional species that were notincluded on the original 2005 list, many of which arerecently described serpentine-associated species. Wealso removed seven taxa from the list that weconstructed after TJM2 (Table 1) because recenttaxonomic changes and/or further study has indicat-ed they are not strongly associated with serpentinesubstrates. To revise the original list, we first updatednomenclature to current Jepson eFlora names (as ofNovember 18, 2019; Jepson Flora Project 2019). Wethen solicited feedback on the list from numerousexpert California botanists and requested suggestionsfor additional species that should be included. Wealso conducted a literature review for recentlydescribed species that have affinities for serpentine. We then conducted further research on all speciesthat were identified by experts or through the
literature review as possibilities for addition to orremoval from the list, as described below.
We have ranked new additions to the list using thesame semi-quantitative scale as the original database(see Safford et al. 2005 for details), with thedifference that we have reduced all rankings .6 to6, as those resulted from the addition of CalFlorainformation (which at the time could be consideredindependent of our other sources). Today CalFloradirectly references the serpentine affinity database inits species descriptions. Rankings of new additions tothe list presented here are based primarily onherbarium records (mostly accessed via the Consor-tium of California Herbaria (CCH1 2019; CCH22019), habitat descriptions by Baldwin et al. (2012)and the Jepson eFlora (Jepson Flora Project 2019),CalFlora observation records (CalFlora 2019), theprimary literature, and in some cases, direct inputfrom botanical experts. In the CCH herbariumrecords, we accessed at least 150 collection recordsfor each taxon (except where records totaled ,150, inwhich case we accessed all records), using randomselection where necessary to ensure no bias inregional coverage. Where CCH or CalFlora recordswere ,5, we combined the two and treated them as asingle information source. We used the BerkeleyMapper (linked to the CCH website), Google Earth, our field experience, and various geologic andjurisdictional (e.g., US Forest Service) maps tovisualize the locations of herbarium records and todetermine, when possible, whether botanical recordslacking geological information were found on or offof ultramafic substrates. Taxa with .50% of usablerecords (‘‘usable’’ ¼ the records identified thesubstrate, or we were able to determine the substrateby another fashion) from serpentine made their way

onto the final list. Rankings of new list additions(e.g., recently described species) should be usedcautiously since many of them are based on limiteddata, and we suggest that all species ranked based onthree or fewer sources are in need of further study. All species in the updated list follow the nomencla-ture of the current (November 2019) Jepson eFloraexcept for 13 taxa (Table 2), most of which arerecently described.
We emphasize that we did not carry out acomplete search of new collection records for everytaxon since 2005. This was only carried out for taxawhere recent publications, taxonomic changes, orpersonal communications from California botanistsled us to believe that such a search might change thestatus of the species. For new additions to the list, weno longer required three separate sources of infor-mation supporting their affinity for serpentine ifevidence for their affinity to serpentine appearedstrong (for example, in the herbarium records).
Finally, it is important to note that for species forwhich all described infraspecific taxa (subspecies, varieties) exhibit the same level of serpentine affinity,we only include the full species name in our database.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
As in Safford et al. (2005) and Safford (2011), wedefine serpentine endemic taxa as those that scored atleast 4.5 in our ranking process. Put another way, ourclass of ‘‘serpentine endemics’’ includes strict endem-ics (more than c. 95% of recorded occurrences onultramafics) and broad endemics (c. 85–94%). Theupdated serpentine affinity database (Appendix 1)contains 255 endemic taxa (strict plus broad endem-ics), 193 of which are full species (this includes fivespecies for which all of the subspecies are listed in thedatabase due to differing levels of serpentine affinity:Arctostaphylos bakeri Eastw., A. montana Eastw.,Calystegia collina (Greene) Brummitt, Cirsium fonti-
nale (Greene) Jeps., and Lessingia micradeniaGreene). Thus, serpentine endemic species accountfor about 14.7% – more than 1/7 – of the endemicspecies in California (based on 1315 endemic speciesin Baldwin 2012). This is a notable increase from the12.5% reported by Safford et al. (2005), and is due toadditions of newly described species and a decrease inthe number of California endemic species accordingto Baldwin et al. (2012).
Taxonomic revisions have led to some changesfrom Safford et al. (2005) in the ordering of familyand genera with the most serpentine endemic taxa.Asteraceae remains the family with the most serpen-tine endemics, with 25 strict endemics, 13 broadendemics, and 106 total serpentine-associated taxa(Table 3). Liliaceae, which historically contained thesecond most serpentine endemics of any family(considering both strict and broad endemics), hasbeen split into several smaller families, many ofwhich are further down the current list, includingAlliaceae – also in the top ten families, Agavaceae,Themidaceae, and so on. As a result, Brassicaceae isnow the second most endemic-rich family (Table 3).Scrophulariaceae was also split in Baldwin et al.(2012) into numerous plant families, and it hasdropped from a fifth place ranking in the Safford etal. (2005) rankings to a complete absence from thelist now. Families derived from Scrophulariaceae arestill important components of serpentine endemismin California however: for example, Orobanchaceaecurrently occupies sixth place on the list, andPhrymaceae and Plantaginaceae are further downthe list. Eriogonum is now the most endemic-richgenus, followed by Streptanthus (Table 4).
As discussed by Safford et al. (2005; see their Figs1 and 2), the distribution of taxa among plantfamilies and genera is very different when comparingserpentine endemics and California endemics. Fam-ilies which support many more serpentine endemictaxa than expected include Linaceae, Polygonaceae,

single region (60; Fig. 1). Together, the North Coastand Klamath regions support 146 serpentine endemictaxa that are found nowhere else in the state. SeeSafford (2011) for a figure and short discussionregarding the elevational distribution of serpentineendemic taxa in California. In short, most taxa growin habitats below 1000 m elevation and few are foundabove 1500 m, primarily due to the relative rarity ofultramafic outcrops above that elevation.
Among the endemic taxa, 216 are dicots, 35 aremonocots, two are gymnosperms, and two arepteridophytes (Appendix 1). The distribution of lifeforms is shown in Fig. 2. Serpentine endemic taxa inCalifornia are primarily perennial forbs (153 of 255taxa, including three that can also be annuals), mostof the rest are annual forbs (74 taxa, including thesame three taxa); less than 10% of the endemic taxain our database are woody species (Fig. 2).
192 (77%) of the endemic taxa in our database arelisted in the CNPS Inventory of Rare and Endan-gered Plants (CNPS 2019). 108 serpentine endemictaxa are assigned California Rare Plant Rank 1B,which includes Federal and State threatened andendangered taxa as well as those taxa that theCalifornia Native Plant Society believes warrantlisting (Appendix 1).
The richness of serpentine endemic taxa inCalifornia is astonishing, given the limited area ofthe state that supports ultramafic rocks and soils.Yet, amazingly, new species continue to be describedfrom ultramafic soils in California. Only 15 yearsafter embarking on this exercise for the first time, weexpanded the list of California serpentine endemicsby 3.7%. Given the outsized contribution made toCalifornia’s natural riches by ultramafic substratesand their biota, we hope and expect that botanicaland geoecological exploration will continue toexpand the California serpentine flora, as well asour understanding of the factors that make it sodiverse.
