Introduction

-  By 13.6% in South Africa there is a problem of drug related crimes that is increasing at an alarming rate- 2009/2010 SAPS.

- Substances is found to be playing a pivotal role which is ranging from 60%- 90% in most social contact crimes (murder, rape, assault, etc.).

- Most of these crimes are committed by family members, friends, acquaintances or colleagues, etc.

- At about 530 children in S.A. are raped on daily basis.

- It is also estimated that 10 000 children suffer commercial sexual exploitation.

- Crime tarnishes government image and negatively affects the investors confidence.

- It is also reported that 70% of youth between 15 years to 34 years are unemployed.

Intro. Cont.../

• A child at a very early years of life (±2yrs) start to attend school.

• Role of the school vs family as socializing agents.

•  Children are caught up in the norms of the peer culture which is characterized by violence.

• Learners are protected from school violence learners through the following legislations:

• Child Care Act (Act 74 of 1983); S.A. Schools Act (Act 84 of 1996); Child Justice Act (Act 74 of 2005); Domestic Violence Act (Act 116 of 19980); The Constitution of RSA (Act 108 of 1996)

• School stakeholders such as: School Principal, School Management Team, Educators, Learners, SGB, etc.

• Some of the schools in the EC are situated in areas that are characterized by negative cultural values, unhealthy family relations, lack of infrastructure, unsatisfactory economic conditions, etc.

Aims of the study §  To establish the different types of juvenile delinquent activities that school pupils in the area under study are exposed to and also commit. §  To determine factors that are found within the school setting that may exacerbate the situation of school violence §  To examine the role that may be played by the school in the prevention of school violence

Research rationale

• Recently, researchers have shown an increased interest in delinquent behaviour that occurs in and around the school premises.

• There is also a continued upheld principle that learning and teaching in order for it to take place it needs a safe and protected environment.

• Due to school violence other learners becomes underprepared

Research Design This article has taken a general scientific approach that displays a strong positivistic orientation.

It is both exploratory and descriptive in nature and conception

According to Maxfield and Babbie (1998:86) in criminal justice research a researcher has a choice from the three methods

The analytical research method has been adopted and it has been supplemented by mass observation in order to allow statistical presentation.

A purposive (judgemental) sampling technique was employed to solicit data from selected Senior Secondary in the Mthatha District of Education.

Spatial delimitations

• The study has been conducted in the EC of S.A.

• Economically the EC is in deep poverty where illiteracy, unemployment, and poor access to basic social service characterises this province.

• The setting of this research is the KSD Municipality with Mthatha as the maim economic growth point

Discussion o  The findings reveals that there is a significant number of respondents

which comes from poor socio-economic backgrounds

o  These children bring their personal problems at school.

o  Poor socio-economic status is one of the predictors of school violence

o  It has also emerged that there is a breakdown in traditional kinship

o  The study has also revealed that there is a lack of relationship between learners and educators

Recommendations & Conclusion

o  This study has found that generally school is the principal institution that has the contact with the child outside the home.

o  School has a plausible role of teaching children values and attitudes

o  There should also be interaction between the family and the school

o  Cooperation between the family and the school can be of enormous benefit.

Recommendations & Conclusion

o  It brings about the psychological feeling that the community has adopted ownership of the school

o  School may not fulfil the role of socialising a child on its own

o  Inculcation of moral values
