green heaven - Cleaning of Bhagwati dham

temple”

Green Action

Motivated nature club members to join her initiative.

Conducted pre-survey to understand temple’s waste generation.

Cleanliness drive was conducted in the temple premises.(Every

Wednesday)

A compost pit was dug to recycle flower waste.

Motivated temple priests to adopt waste segregation in the premises.

Made channel for disposal of liquid waste coming from temple.

Guided temple management for disposal of Non biodegradable

waste. (dumped in a pit behind temple.)

Beautification of temple premises by plantation and painting was

done. (18-20 plants)

Motivated people to maintain the beauty in and around temple.

Achievements and Learnings

• Reduction of plastic waste up to 90% in the temple premise.

• Composting is being practiced.

• People started using dona in place of plastics to carry garlands and

other worshipping materials.

• Greenery and aesthetic value of temple has increased.

Green action

• Did a seminar to make students join his initiative and a group called

“conservative pioneers” was formed.

• An audit was done to measure water consumption of school. (1520 litres

daily).

• Tanks of medicated water were installed at different places in school. (For

handwashing purpose; water had neem extract)

• Alternative methods were provided for practices that consume excess

water. (Gardening and mopping is being done with bucket and mug)

• Hand made posters were pasted near water taps.

• All the leaking water sources were repaired. (A quick fix service was

started)

• A post survey was conducted. (Daily consumption of water decreased to

545 litres )

Achievements and Learning

• Around ~800 liters of water is being saved from wastage.

• Students have understood the importance of water.

• Behavioral change in the students, gardener and cleaning staff can be

seen. (Students started using water wisely)

Green action

• Motivated students to join his ghat cleaning project.

• Carried out a cleanliness drive at the ‘Kaithi Ghat’. (Visited ghat

once in a week)

• Conducted a signature campaign.

• Installed 4 bins made up of bamboo shoots. (students contributed

for it).

• Convinced ‘Ganga Seva Nidhi’ to have a volunteer appointed to

take care of the ghat. A person has been appointed to take care of

ghat.

• Still visits ghat once in a week to check the working and cleanliness

status of ghat.

Achievements and learning

• Beautification of ‘Kaithi ghat’. (Cleanliness)

• Behavioral change in visitors and sages. (Most visitors dump the

waste in dustbins)

• Reduction in usage of polythenes.

• Reduction in littering on the ghat.

• Carried out auditing of the power consuming equipments in school

(Smart class and water coolers consume the most power )

• Prepared a presentation on advantages of LED over incandescent

bulbs.

• Convinced Parents and Principal to install LED bulbs and solar

panels.

• Got solar panel and LED installed at home. ( 1 solar panel; 3 LED

bulbs)

• Convinced Principal to have LED bulbs installed in Office and

staffroom.

• Responsibilities were assigned to switch off the high power

consuming devices timely like water coolers and smart classes.

Achievements and Learning

• Decrement in household bill (from 450/500 to 150/200 Rs per

month).

• Decrement in School’s bill. (~150 Rs)

• Conducted a survey to know the number of circulars student’s

receive.

• Contacted the authorities to retrieve the information about the

number of students in school.

• She did research on the making of paper. (how many trees needed

for making of paper)

• Conducted a survey on social media to know opinion of students

(students had similar opinion to use SMS instead of circulars).

• Suggested authorities to use double sided paper and use SMS as

means of communication between school and parents.

• School started using SMS for communication purposes.

• Both the sides of the paper is now used and paper is recycled.

• Got handmade cardboard dustbins installed in every classroom.

• A seminar was held on waste management and he took lead role.

• Got a compost pit made in school.

• Two bins have been made for degradable and non bio-degradable

waste.

• Spread awareness about ill effects of polythene in school.

• Made green code of conduct in school.

• Carried out a survey with 10 street vendors. (All of them were using

styrofoam and plastic plates)

• Educated and motivated street vendors to use dona instead of

Styrofoam or plastic plates.

Achievements and Learning • Half of the vendors switched to using of dona for giving food stuff.

• Segregation of waste started in school.

• Composting is being practiced in school.

• School became a NO POLYTHENE zone.

• Students follow Green code of conduct and dump the waste in bins and help in its segregation by dumping organic and inorganic waste in the respective bins.

• Did an auditing to know the number of polythene generating in houses. (10 households; polythene numbers was high)

• Formed a group called “The First Genius Brain Club”.

• Collected newspapers from neighbours.

• Educated slum children and in return asked them to make paper bags. (~3500)

• Senior citizens and group members also made paper bags.

• Conducted an awareness drive to make people aware about ill effects of polythene.

• Held a drawing competition.

• Distribution of paper bags to shopkeepers, zoo and neighbours.

• Carried out cleanliness drive at the bank of River Gomati. (So far 3 times; still carry out drives at the end of every month)

• Installed 2 dustbins near the bank.

• Motivated temple visitors to use paper bags instead of polythenes. (A temple close to her locality)

Achievements and learning • Usage of polythene declined sharply in community, zoo and at the

bank of River Gomati.

• People started using paper bags to carry flowers in temple.

• Shopkeepers are using paper bags instead of polythene.

• Did an auditing to know the sanitation status of primary school and

village.

• Made students and villagers aware of the importance of sanitation

and hygiene through picture story and posters.

• Taught them proper hand washing techniques. (120 students)

• Made students aware about importance of water and conservation

techniques.

• Tested the water quality of the different sources of water.

• Wrote a letter to the DM of Varanasi to build toilets in this school.

"Initially I faced lot of challenges, teachers were not ready to give time, once convinced it

was difficult to work at the level of students, language was an issue. Soon I started

enjoying it and now all the students do proper handwash not only here in school but

• Cleaned the plot which was being used for dumping waste.

• Did research work on composting and formed a compost pit on the plot.

• Carried out a cleanliness drive in locality.

• Spread awareness about ill effects of polythene.

• Raised funds and carried out a plantation drive in locality. (Planted two saplings in front of around 20 houses of colony)

• Got water alarm system installed in school as well as home.

• The plot which was being used for dumping waste got converted into a garden farm.

• Greenery status of locality improved.

• 6 Neighbours were motivated to have garden farm in their home.
