Dogs in Our ParksDogs, on leash, are allowed on the pathways system and in most parks. Dogs must be kept on leash in the river valley and other natural areas to minimize interference with wildlife and other park users.
Where is the off-leash area? This Dog Park is a 38-acre park located south of Drake Landing. Open from sunrise to sunset, the park provides a fenced-in area for well-behaved canines to exercise and play without endangering themselves or disturbing wildlife. Access the off-leash park from two locations:1. NE of the intersection of 32 Street E & Stockton Ave2. Parking lot at the SW corner of Drake Landing Loop
Are there places my dog can’t go?School grounds and any other locations that have “No Dogs” signage.
Scoop It—it’s the lawClean up after your pet. Bag dispensers and waste receptacles are located throughout our parks for dog walkers.
AccessibilityPlease refer to the map symbols, which identify steep slopes or pathways that contain stairs.
Ride Right• STOP before crossing a roadway, driveway, sidewalk,
alley or parking lot• Enter trail entrances and roadways with caution • Obey all traffic signs and signals• Walk your bike across the street in a designated
crossing area• Cycle defensively, be aware of what’s happening
around you• Never wear earphones—it’s important to be aware of
the surroundings & listen for animals, trains and traffic.
Always use hand signals to show what you intend to do:
TURN LEFT STOP TURN RIGHT
Did You Know?• In 0.75 km you walk about 1,000 steps
• It is recommended that we walk 10,000 steps every day• Walking 10,000 steps covers about 8 km and burns about
400 to 500 calories
• On average, it takes 13 minutes to walk 1 km and 4 minutes to cycle 1 km
• Use a free mobile phone app to map out a route and track your steps (e.g. Map My Walk & Map My Run)
• Check out www.mapmyfitness.com for Okotoks routes
Safe Kids Canada provides valuable safety information on cycling, playgrounds, sports, pedestrian
and seasonal safety. Visit www.safekidscanada.ca
Local WildlifeThe Sheep River Valley is a wildlife corridor. While in the river valley or other parks and open spaces, you may come across a variety of animals, including deer, coyotes, skunks, muskrats, and badgers. Occasional cougar sightings are also normal. Please use caution when travelling through the river valley, and practice the following safety tips:• DO NOT feed or approach any wild animal• DO NOT allow dogs off leash except at the Off Leash
Park• DO NOT distribute bird feed in parks or natural areas
To report a vicious animal, call Fish & Wildlife at 403-652-8330 or RCMP at 403-938-4202. If you feel threatened, call 9-1-1.
Share the PathPeople use the parks and pathways for a variety of reasons and sharing the use can reduce and prevent conflicts and collisions. No matter what kind of activity you enjoy, it’s important to follow some basic rules and guidelines to ensure that the pathways and bikeways remain a safe and enjoyable place for everyone.
• Respect the rights of others• Yield to the right of way• On pathways, stay to the right - except when passing• Signal with a bell, whistle, horn or voice when passing• Use caution on hills, in curves and on or under bridges• Yield to pedestrians and slower moving traffic (i.e.
cyclists and in-line skaters yield to walkers and joggers)• If you ride after dark or in bad weather, be sure to
have a light & reflectors• The maximum speed limit on pathways is 20 km/hr• Please stay on designated pathways/trails
Wear the GearWhether you’re cycling, in-line skating, or skateboarding, it’s important to Wear the Gear! A properly fitted and correctly worn bike helmet can cut the risk of serious head injury by up to 85%.• Always wear an approved helmet that is properly
fitted• Helmets are mandatory for cyclists under 18 years• Wear bright, visible clothing, lights and reflectors
Sidewalk snow clearingIn addition to Okotoks extensive pathway system, sidewalks contribute significantly to walkability and often serve as connections between pathways. Please be responsible and aware of the need to remove all snow and ice from sidewalks—remember snow clearing of sidewalks that border businesses and residences is the responsibility of the adjacent property owner. Where sidewalks border parks, the Town provides the snow removal. Sidewalks not cleaned may be subject to a fine. Please do your part to keep sidewalks clear!
Skateboard and BMX ParksLocated next to the Okotoks Recreation Centre, the skateboard park features a concrete design, permanent ramps, jumps and rails. Located near the Sheep River, southwest of 32 Street and North Railway Street is an official BMX park with a contoured dirt race track. Remember to wear the gear!
Outdoor Water Spray ParkThe Water Spray Park is located outside the Okotoks Recreation Centre beside the skateboard park. The park will be open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. when the temperature is above 20º C.
The Town has over 49 km of pathway system that connect you to virtually every corner of Okotoks, whether you are going for a jog, taking the kids to the baseball game or walking to get groceries. The pathway system winds through 200 ha of naturalized area, including the river valley, and connects to 15 soccer fields, 14 ball diamonds, a running track, skate board park, BMX track, five outdoor skating rinks, tennis courts, 96 parks, 48 playgrounds, an off-leash dog park, and Seaman Stadium. The pathway system encircles both bridges in town, connecting the entire river valley. Get some fresh air and exercise, meet your neighbours, walk to your next destination and explore a corner of the pathway system you’ve never seen!
