A LITTLE INFO ABOUTKemper Museum of Contemporary Art was built in 1994. The Museum’s name comes from its founder, R. Crosby Kemper Jr., who was an art collector, philanthropist, and bank president. He named it in honor of his grandmother, Charlotte Crosby Kemper.

He and his wife, Bebe Hunt, started the Museum’s Permanent Collection with a gift of 340 works of art. We now have over over 1,400!

At Kemper Museum, we collect and exhibit works by contemporary artists.

Contemporary art is art being made TODAY (or during a recent time period) and it often reflects our culture and society.

Contemporary artists:

• Find new ways to think about, respond to, or visualize the world around them.

• Ask questions, express feelings, and challenge traditional ideas – How does this work challenge or rethink the familiar?

• Experiment with color, shapes, and materials

W H A T H A P P E N S D U R I N G Y O U R V I S I T ? A DOCENT will take groups of about ten students each on a tour of the Museum. Tours last about an hour.

DURING THE TOUR:You might see things that you never thought of as art before! Try to have an open mind and a big imagination. And remember––there are no right or wrong answers, so it is ok to SHARE your IDEAS and THOUGHTS.

WHAT IS A DOCENT? A DOCENT is a guide in a museum who helps visitors look at art and explore the ideas, stories, materials, and techniques behind it.

The Museum displays art in galleries, or smaller rooms.

At Kemper Museum, there are three smaller galleries, and one large gallery. Artwork is also on display in the Museum’s Atrium.

We can’t display all 1,400 pieces of art at one time, so we rotate artwork from the museum’s Permanent Collection. Additionally, artwork is sometimes loaned to Kemper Museum from a different museum or artist.

Besides you and your docent, there are some other important people at the Museum.

The CURATOR: The Museum’s curatormakes decisions about which pieces of art to display and how to display them.

Other VISITORS: Kemper Museum visitors come from the Kansas City community, other states, and even other countries!

The GUARDS: While at the Museum, you may notice that each gallery has a guard. The guards help keep the art and YOU safe.

Several sculptures at Kemper Museum are on permanent display. You can see them each time you visit!

In order for you to learn about and enjoy the artwork of our time, the Museum needs to protect and preserve it.

You can help make that happen!

Please don’t touch the art or lean against the walls

No food, candy, gum, or drinks
