EDUCATIONIN THE UAECurriculums, academic calendar and school fees

Educational standards and the selection of institutions across the UAE are excellent, whether you are enrolling your child into nursery or learning new skills as an adult.

The emirates are home to various international and government nurseries, schools and universities offering top quality education. School inspections are now compulsory, and teachers do need to be professionally qualified as in western countries. Local schools are restricted primarily to Arabic-speaking Emiratis, so you will need to enrol your child in a private school. Although prices can be

high, your child will learn Arabic and other languages from a young age, the facilities are world class and schools are a mix of nationalities. The number of students enrolled in private schools in Dubai is currently estimated at 225,000 and there are around 185,000 students in Abu Dhabi.

Both emirates have plans to build more new schools by 2020. There are also a growing number of internationally accredited colleges and universities offering courses in the arts, sciences, business and engineering sectors.

EAccording to the KHDA rankings for 2013/14, nine out of the 12 Outstanding schools in Dubai follow a UK curriculum.

School feesSchool fees are a contentious issue for many parents. For a good school, you can expect to pay more than Dhs.25,000 per year during the primary years, Dhs.30,000 and up for the middle primary years, and Dhs.70,000 plus per year for secondary schools.

If you’re lucky, your company may include an education allowance for school fees as part of your employment package, though this is no longer very common. It also costs around Dhs.500 to put your child’s name on a waiting list, and there’s a registration fee (about Dhs.2,000), which is deducted from your annual costs.

Banks offer loans to help cover the cost of school fees – and the United Arab Bank has a ‘New Arrival Package’ designed for newcomers who need financial help to get started. The package goes a long way to helping with school fees.

ADEC rankings In Abu Dhabi in 2012, the Irtiqa’a programme was launched by the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) to rate the quality of schools. Schools are inspected every two years.

Eight standards are taken into consideration: students’ attainment and progress; students’ personal development; the quality of teaching and learning; the meeting of students’ needs through the curriculum; the protection, guidance and support of children; the quality of the school’s property; their resources; and the effectiveness of leadership and management.

All schools fall into one of three bands: Band A 1, Outstanding; 2, Very Good; 3, GoodBand B 4, Satisfactory and Improving; 5, SatisfactoryBand C 6, Unsatisfactory; 7, Very Unsatisfactory; 8, Poor

KHDA rankingsThe Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) is Dubai’s regulatory body for private education at all levels, from early childhood to adult learning.

Since inspections began in 2008, KHDA reports have ranked every school in Dubai from Outstanding and Good to Acceptable and Unacceptable. Schools that perform well can increase their fees at a steeper percentage than poorer performing schools. School inspections are carried out annually by the Dubai Schools Inspection Bureau (DSIB).

Assessments are based on a wide range of criteria, from academic achievements in core subjects to the attitude of students. Higher rankings often come hand in hand with the quality of teaching of Islamic and Arabic subjects. See khda.gov.ae for more information and for a breakdown of each school’s result.

British schools can now apply for inspection and British School Overseas certification by the British government.

School uniformsMost private schools in the UAE will insist on students wearing the official school uniform. Each school will use a particular uniform supply shop and this will be the only place where you can buy official school items. Before heading out and spending a fortune on uniforms, check with the school and with other parents which items are compulsory and which are not.

THE EARLY YEARSthat is within walking distance of your home or en route to the office. Bear in mind that traffic can often get very congested at pick-up and drop-off time during term time.

CurriculumMost nurseries will follow one particular curriculum – mainly International, English (Early Years Foundation Stage/EYFS) or Montessori. Quite often there will be an amalgamation of approaches with more of a focus on children’s social and personal development than on any one particular country’s curriculum.

EYFS is designed to prepare children for entry to the UK’s Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) at school. EYFS focuses on communication, language, and physical, personal, social and emotional development. Assessments are made throughout a child’s time at the nursery, creating a profile to help teachers understand the child and tailor a curriculum to suit their development.

Most nurseries are open for four or five hours in the morning and charge anything from Dhs.3,000 to Dhs.12,000 per term. You can pay extra in many nurseries if you need to drop your child off earlier or collect them later (up until 6pm). In general, classes of between 10 and 20 children are staffed by a nursery teacher and as many as three teaching assistants.

Selecting a nurseryThe UAE’s Ministry of Social Affairs recently launched a rating system in a bid to boost nursery services across the country. A quality standards guidebook is also available from mea.gov.ae to help parents make an informed decision and choose a school.

Don’t be surprised if your child starts learning Arabic or even French from the age of one. Another factor to consider is whether or not a nursery provides meals.

There are also schools offering the Canadian Alberta based curriculum; the Australian Diploma (DP), the Middle Years (MYP) and the Primary Years (PYP); and the French curriculum.

Getting a school placeThe best bet is to apply to three or four nurseries or schools. To register your child on a school waiting list there’s usually a Dhs.500 non-refundable fee. If places are available, your child will be assessed and then either offered a place or put on another waiting list. Assessments and entrance exams to the more popular secondary schools are usually held at the child’s nursery or school. The chances of a place increase with siblings, who may get priority, or if your child is in an affiliated nursery or primary school.

Holiday calendarThe summer holidays stretch for 10 weeks over the hottest months of July and August. There are also holidays in April and December. Schools close for at least a week twice per year for Eid Al Fitr and Eid Al Adha, and will most likely also open for reduced hours during the month of Ramadan.

At schools which follow Indian or Pakistani curriculums, the term starts in April and ends the following March.

Boarding schoolsRepton School Dubai has excellent facilities and is modelled on its renowned public school counterpart in the UK. In Dubai, it was the first boarding school to open and has boarding facilities for boys and girls.

In September 2015, the new Swiss International Scientific School will open its primary school in Dubai for up to 1,400 students. By 2017, the school will expand to include a secondary school creating a second boarding option for children in the emirate. Meanwhile, Cranleigh Abu Dhabi, which opened in 2014, is the capital’s only boarding school.

There is a wide choice of international curriculums across the UAE’s primary and secondary schools, but many schools follow either the English National Curriculum, American Curriculum or International Baccalaureate Programme (IB). International schools are typically open to all nationalities.

Although British and American curriculums are the most common, others include the CBSE/ICSE, an ideal option for Indian nationals who want to continue their child’s education internationally, but expect to settle back in India. It educates students to CBSE and ICSE level to the end of Year 12.

Primary and secondary schools cater to the expat community

School transportIf you are not able to do the school run every day, you can pay for the bus services offered by most schools. The advantages are that you avoid having to deal with heavy traffic, and strict regulations mean that bus safety standards are high.

Universities in Abu DhabiPublic universities are open to everyone: Zayed University has been upgraded and relocated, while Abu Dhabi Vocational Education and Training Institute has provided vocational training in health, law and tourism since 2007. International universities and colleges have grown more numerous, reflecting increased interest in higher education, and both New York University and the Paris-Sorbonne University have branches in the emirate. The New York Film Academy Abu Dhabi offers both two-year and shorter courses in acting and film making, while the Masdar Institute of Science & Technology provides cutting-edge programmes based around sustainable development.

Elsewhere in the UAEAll of the emirates have their own universities. Sharjah’s university is a pioneer in academia, scientific research and the arts and offers 80 programmes at the bachelors, masters and doctorate levels. Ajman University of Science & Technology offers students state-of-the-art technology while remaining grounded in the local culture. It also has a campus in Fujairah. In Umm Al Quwain, the Emirates Canadian University College offers language and business courses, and the American University of Ras Al Khaimah specialises in engineering, business and arts and sciences.

Universities and higher education in DubaiIn the past, the vast majority of expat teenagers returned to their home countries when moving from secondary to tertiary education. Now, a growing number of institutions within Dubai and the other emirates entice more people into studying in the UAE, with degrees and diplomas offered in the arts, sciences, business, engineering and technology. There are also a number of opportunities for post-graduate study here in the UAE. Many institutions are based at Knowledge Village (kv.ae) near Dubai’s Media City and Internet City, and Dubai International Academic City (diacedu.ae), on the outskirts.

Public institutions are free for UAE citizens, but the amount of international universities is increasing as the interest in higher education grows. In particular, many UK institutions are looking to tap into the growing number of business schools in Dubai; the London Business School (london.edu) is based in DIFC, as is Cass (cass.city.ac.uk, formerly City University Business School). Warwick Business School (wbs.ac.uk) has been offering MBAs in Dubai since 2003. Some of the universities, including several of the ones above, offer students the opportunity to study part-time, or in a structured e-learning environment through the use of a range of learning strategies.

Abu Dhabi Mums (abudhabimums.ae) is a non-profit group for pre-school children. Open to anyone who is expecting or has children up to the age of 5 years, members receive discounts at various outlets in the city and Christmas and Easter parties are organised. Their forum is also a great source of information on many Abu Dhabi related subjects.

Many schools run ECAs (Extra Curricular Activities) from kindergarten upwards. Generally, the younger years only have one ECA a week for 30-60 minutes directly after school, while the older years may have multiple classes at various times. School-run ECAs are often included in the school fees, however independent companies also hold classes at schools during the afternoons, evenings and at weekends and holidays, and charge fees for the term.

Clubs in DubaiTurning Pointe runs ballet classes for all ages in various schools around Dubai, as does Kids’ Theatre Works, while Active Sports Academy, Esports and Elite offer football training and a range of sport classes. If your kids are super sporty, there are a number of academies that can develop their talents – would-be Federers should sign up with the Clark Francis Tennis Academy, budding Beckhams can hone their skills with the International Football Academy or UAE English Soccer School of Excellence, wanna-be Olympic gold medallists should dive in with Australian International Swim Schools and potential Bruce Lees can kick it with various clubs around Dubai. FAMILY-FRIENDLY ATTRACTIONS

(minimonsters.ae) has one of the UAE’s largest entertainment zones. The indoor trampoline centre Jump Boxx has lots of interconnected trampolines, ball pools and springy areas for kids to jump on and into.

Summer campsThere are various sports and activity clubs that run after-school activities and summer camps, plus some great kids’ attractions such as KidZania and ice-skating inside Dubai Mall. For up-to-date information on family events and activities, visit uae4kidz.biz.

Read the papers and look online to find out about shows or events. Many malls put on entertainment during Eid, Dubai Shopping Festival and school holidays.

Most of the major malls in the UAE have activity centres, one of the most popular being Fun Works at the new Yas Mall and Fun City at Dalma Mall, Abu Dhabi. Adventure HQ’s Adventure Zone at Dalma Mall has a skateboard park, bike track, trampolines and rock climbing that kids can all enjoy in half-hourly sessions.

Most language schools run summer courses for kids, or alternatively, contact Active Sports Academy, which arranges sporty summer camps around Dubai.

During the cooler months (October to May), kids can enjoy many parks and beaches, with playgrounds for varying ages. In Dubai, try Zabeel Park, or Abu Dhabi’s Mushrif Central Park. The water parks at Atlantis, The Palm and Wild Wadi are amazing too. Public beaches are popular and there are plenty to choose from, including Kite Beach, Jumeirah Beach Residence and the Open Beach, next to the iconic Burj Al Arab.

During the warmer months (June to September) the many indoor play areas keep your kids from getting bored and overheated. Ski Dubai at Mall of the Emirates is world famous, Fun City (funcity.ae) offers soft play facilities across the country, while Mini Monsters

Across the UAEHili Fun City in Al Ain is a theme park with more than 30 attractions and a picnic area. Or to cool off, Ice Land Water Park in Ras Al Khaimah has water rides, ‘ice’-capped mountains and Penguin Falls, the tallest manmade waterfall in the world. Sharjah’s Adventureland is a jungle-themed indoor attraction with 25 thrilling rides and a go-kart track, and Dreamland Aqua Park in Umm Al Quwain offers more aquatic fun.
