Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov (1859-1935) was a Russian composer who studied under Rimsky-Korsakov and for many years was the director of the Moscow Conservatory. His most famous composition, “Procession of the Sardar,” is the fourth movement of the Caucasian Sketches for orchestra, inspired by the folk music of the Caucasas mountain region of Russia. The exotic Eastern scales and colorful percussion used in this work will add a touch of mystery and adventure to your next concert program. Be sure the percussion section carefully observes all dynamic markings and that the tambourine and triangle can be heard over the snare drum.

This work is full of colorful contrasts and musical energy making it a fine selection for both contest and festival programming.
