To avoid the risk of dictatorship or tyranny, the group divided the new government into three parts, or branches: the executive branch, the legislative branch, and the judicial branch.
Executive Branch: Headed by the president. The president carries out f ederal laws and recommends new ones, directs national defense and f oreign policy, and performs
ceremonial duties. Powers include directing government, commanding the Armed Forces, dealing with international powers, acting as chief law enforcement offi cer, and vetoing laws. The President gets elected by the citizens of the USA.
Legislative Branch: Headed by Congress, which includes the House of Representatives and the Senate. The main task of these two bodies is to make the laws. I ts powers
include passing laws, originating spending bills (House), impeaching offi cials (Senate), and approving treaties (Senate). Each state elects two representatives to the Senate. The House of Representatives is made up of elected Congressmen f rom each state. The number of representatives f rom each state is based upon that states’ population.
J udicial Branch: Headed by the Supreme Court. I ts powers include interpreting the Constitution, reviewing
laws, and deciding cases involving states' rights. The President appoints the Supreme Court J ustices. There are 9 J ustices that serve a lif e term on the Supreme Court.
