Facts• World wide coronary heart diseases kill more

than 8 million people per year

• Coronary heart disease is the leading cause of

death in India

• Obesity is affecting 5% of India’s population

• An estimate touts the number of blood pressure

patients in the India will rise to about 214 million

by 2030 up from about 118 million in 2000.

Need or DesireHunger or Appetite

• When you eat to satisfy the body’s fuel needs its hunger

• When you eat to satisfy your taste buds it is your appetite

Do you love junk food? Then be prepared for the following consequences:

• Obesity

• Hypertension ( High Blood pressure)

• High Cholesterol

• Type 2 Diabetes

• Sleep Apnea

• Asthma

• Eating disorders

Adequate Intake• Sodium - 1,500 mg daily for ages 9-50.

(This value is less than 1 teaspoon of table salt per day)

• Fat - 44gm to 78gm everyday

• Cholesterol – Not more than 300mg everyday.

• Carbohydrate - About 45 to 65 percent calories i.e. 225 to 325 gm everyday

• Protein requirements differ according to age

Teenagers:

– Boys – 52 gm approx

– Girls - 46 gm approx

Adults :

– Men - 56 gm approx

– Women - 46 gm approx

Tips to start a Healthy Diet• Calories: Do not concentrate on counting calories,

instead look for healthier options that would satisfy

your taste buds.

• Go slow: Changing everything in one go will lead to

temptation or depression. Make small changes, like

add salad or slowly reduce the portions

• Do not eliminate anything: Having a small portion of

food that you love once a while will make no harm.

• Drink a glass of water before you start your meal.

Healthy Lifestyleo To have a healthy long life one must:

• Make time for exercise• Yoga• Get enough sleep• Avoid alcohol & smoking• Walk• Laugh! It is the best medicine• A regular health check-up• Indulge in outdoor activity• Have Home cooked food.
