Information Booklet
For students and parents
Most subjects use the ‘Tic Tac Toe’ system for homework Aim To develop independent learners who have an ability to manage their time and be resourceful. The skills acquired will be invaluable for the students’ future study and work place. How does Tic Tac Toe work? Pupils choose three tasks to complete over the term in each subject. The tasks should form a line that runs through the centre. The line can be vertical, horizontal or diagonal. Each pupil should complete a task labelled as 1, 2 and 3. For each task that is chosen there is a due date, in some cases this is denoted by ‘wb’ which means week beginning. They should then submit the work in their lesson that week. How long should they spend? Pupils should spend between 60 to 90 minutes on each task. This does not necessarily need to be done all at once, in fact it may be more advisable to break up the tasks into research, producing and proof reading. How will the work be assessed? Task 1 and 2 will be assessed by ‘comment only’ marking. The comments will include positive comments as well as targets for improvement in future tasks. Task 3 will be given a level based on the level descriptors outlined in the National Curriculum of England. If you have any questions then please do not hesitate to ask for help from your child’s form teacher.

Y 7 English
Term One Tic Tac Toe Homework: Every week your child will have:
● Spellings to learn from a set list for a weekly test (assessed in class). ● Independent reading to be recorded in a reading log. Students have all been given a
reading list and the reading log will be monitored by their class teacher.
● One reading /writing/research task per week to consolidate learning; this will be linked to the relevant unit of study and will be written in the homework diary.

Y 7 Mathematics Mathematics homework at DBS consists of two elements. Firstly ‘knowledge’ homework which allows students to consolidate their classroom learning and secondly an ‘inquiry’ homework which encourages students to develop their research and independent learning skills through a range of tasks involving research, problem solving and investigation work. These will be assessed formatively with teachers providing students with written feedback including a target for improvement. The aim of these tasks is to allow students to reach their full potential in Mathematics as well as develop a range of transferable problem solving and communication skills. Students will be set this homework on a weekly basis.
Science: Pupils will do one project-based piece of homework during each teaching block (a minimum of 3 weeks). These projects will focus on developing key scientific skills:
· Thinking scientifically · Understanding the applications and implications of Science · Collaborating and communicating in Science · Using investigative approaches · Working with evidence · How science works
Pupils will receive instruction sheets for each project and they will record due dates in their Pupil Diary. In addition to this pupils will be expected to revise thoroughly for an end of unit test at the end of each teaching block, timings for tests will also be communicated in advance.
Music: Music homework will be given weekly. A booklet will be provided, relating to the topics the students are studying in class. The format will be an essay in 4 parts. This is a leveled piece of work to complement the practical assessment they will have undertaken for each topic. The 4 parts are:

task should be explained, with examples of what they learnt musically and why it was important to learn.
