History of the Town

To protect the territory, crossed by an old provincial trail, connecting Prague with

Poland, Landlord Hron from House of Načeratic established a castle in the first half of 13th century. We can find the first mention of town

Náchod in written sources in 1254.

In the course of centuries the castle owners changed, but mainly we should

remember the King Jan Lucemburský (John of Luxembourg). The late Gothic castle was rebuilt into a comfortable Renaissance castle in

the years from 1566 to 1614. And so began the period of the greatest cultural and economic boom of Náchod began.

Nowadays Náchod is a district town, keeping its historical monuments in good

condition and with a modern house-building. There is a textile, rubber and electrotechnical industry. The town has recently been a natural, historical, tourist and administrative centre of the area. There are 20

thousands of inhabitants.
