The War Begins…• War quickly became a bloody stalemate
Germany Faces a war on two fronts– Schlieffen Plan – attack on west first and quickly go to east
where a weak Russia would be delayed in supplying front lines– Germany did not win West and stalemate continues
• On the Eastern Front Russia begins to struggle– Russian army short on food and supplies– No railroads to bring supplies– Plus Germany controlled the Baltic Sea region
• Fighting Spreads beyond Europe into Africa and Asia and is truly becoming a World War (see page 852)

warning
• Lusitania is sunk in May of 1915– War hits home and U.S. citizens call for war– Other American ships are attacked

Was the sinking of the Lusitania justified?
• U.S. claimed the Lusitania carried an innocent cargo
• Lusitania was in fact heavily armed;* – 1,248 cases shells– 4,927 boxes of cartridges (1,000 round/box)– 2,000 cases of small-arms ammunition
