The War Begins…• War quickly became a bloody stalemate

Germany Faces a war on two fronts– Schlieffen Plan – attack on west first and quickly go to east

where a weak Russia would be delayed in supplying front lines– Germany did not win West and stalemate continues

• On the Eastern Front Russia begins to struggle– Russian army short on food and supplies– No railroads to bring supplies– Plus Germany controlled the Baltic Sea region

• Fighting Spreads beyond Europe into Africa and Asia and is truly becoming a World War (see page 852)

America Become’s Restless…• Germany intensified strong hold of Atlantic

Ocean– Announced sinking of ANY ship without

warning

• Lusitania is sunk in May of 1915– War hits home and U.S. citizens call for war– Other American ships are attacked

• President, Woodrow Wilson still hoping to remain neutral

Was the sinking of the Lusitania justified?

• U.S. claimed the Lusitania carried an innocent cargo

• Lusitania was in fact heavily armed;* – 1,248 cases shells– 4,927 boxes of cartridges (1,000 round/box)– 2,000 cases of small-arms ammunition

More trouble for the U.S.

• Germany also tried to align with Mexico and help them gain back “conquered” land in exchange for becoming an Ally.

• Woodrow Wilson, President of the United States.

– Wanted to remain neutral

– Germany tried to align with Mexico

– Allied Powers need help
