Mars Exploration

Overview/IntroductionOn December 17, 1903 in North Carolina The first flight of the Wright Flyer flew in the air for a total time of 12 seconds. This was the first time in history that an aircraft controlled by a pilot and propelled by a motor flew. This feat, was accomplished by the Wright Brothers.NASA has been exploring the planet Mars since the failed fly by of the USSR in 1960 . Mariner 4 arrived at Mars on July 14, 1965 and passed within 6,118 miles of the planet's surface after an eight-month journey. This mission provided the first close-up images of the red planet.. Mariner 4 is now in a solar orbit.. The Mars 2003 mission will consist of two identical rovers. The rovers will be landed using an airbag system similar to that used on Mars Pathfinder but without the stationary lander. The first landing is scheduled to take place on January 4, 2004 and the second 3 weeks later on 25 January. The rovers are designed to cover roughly 100 meters each martian day, or sol (approximately 24 hours, 37 minutes). These two explorations have and continue to changed the face of aviation. This presentation will compare and contrast these two endeavors, and give examples of hands on activities for relative explorations.

What were the questions ?

Wright Brothers

Can man sustain controlled flight?

Mars Missions

Is there support for life on Mars?

What’s in Common? The process used to obtain the answer to both

questions was the same.

The Scientific method

What was Hypothesized?

Wright BrothersA device can be builtThat will allow man to

fly like a bird.Mars Missions

Exploration missions to Mars will give us needed answers
