look for. Every word problem contains code

words to help us solve them.

The following pages will show

you certain words to look for and hopefully make

doing word problems a lot

1. A store received a shipment of car parts. One box contained 148 parts, another had 132 parts, and the third had 216 parts. How many parts were received in

all?

2. Together a truck and its cargo weigh

24,525 pounds. When the truck is empty, it

weighs 12,750 pounds. What is the weight of

the cargo?

3. There are 68 street lights along Main Street.

Each light uses 4,225 watts of electrical power. When all of the lights are on, how many watts of

electrical power are being used?

4. Last year a total of 5,904 people attended

the Hawks’ home basketball games. There

were 36 home games, and the same number of

people attended each game. How many people

attended each home game?

5. A bakery used the following amounts of

milk: 9,421 kilograms; 6,125 kilograms; 8,123 kilograms; and 8,584 kilograms. What was the total amount of

milk used?

6. Mount McKinley is 20,320 feet high. Mount Kennedy is 16,286 feet high.

How much higher is Mount McKinley than

Mount Kennedy?
