SophomoreforwardRebeccaVintledtheRMUscoringeffortwithonegoalandtwoassists.Themulti-pointeffortisVint’ssixthoftheseasonandthirdstraightfortheforward. ThesecondperiodprovedtobethemostsuccessfulfortheColonialsastheyscoredtwogoalswithin2:24.OnethefirstRMUpowerplaychanceofthegame,seniorcaptainDaynaNewsomscoredtoputRMUahead1-0.SeniorassistantcaptainJamieJoslinputtheinitialshotongoalthatledtoascuffleinfrontofthenet.NewsomfoudnthecageafterareboundedshotfromfellowclassmateJenniferKindret. Withjust6:05ontheclock,RMUscoreditssecondpowerplaygoalofthegametogoahead,2-0.ImbrognoputhomeareboundedshotfromFer-guswhileVintwascreditedwiththesecondaryassist. The Colontino Era InjusthisfirstseasonasheadcoachoftheRobertMorrisUniversitywomen’shockeyteam,PaulColontinoledtheColonialstounprecedentedheights.ColontinoledtheColonialstothelargestyear-to-yearwinimprovementinDivisionIwomen’shockeyin2011-12beforeguidingthesquadtoastorybookendingasRMUcapturedtheprogram’sfirst-everconferencechampionship. HehelpedRMUbreakitsprogramrecordforwinsbytheendofJanuaryandfinishedtheseasonwith19victories,anamazing13-winimprove-mentfromthepriorseason.Despitebeingpickedtofinishlastintheleagueafterthelossoftheprogram’sall-timeleadingscorer,RMUpostedthehighest-everfinishinleagueplayunderColontino’sguidance,withthemostCHAwinsandpointsever,andalsoresetschoolrecordsforlongestwin-ningstreakandlongestunbeatenstreakduringthecourseoftheseason Colontinoledthesquadtooneofthebiggestregular-seasonwinsinprogramhistoryJan.21whenRobertMorrisscoredtwiceinthefinalthreeminutestodefeatconferencepowerhouseMercyhurstforthefirsttimeever.ThevictorynotonlyendedtheLakers’28-gameconferenceunbeatenstreak,butitwouldserveasaharbingerofthingstocomefortheColonials. RobertMorris’successoccurredduetodramaticimprovementsonbothendsoftheice.RMUbrokethesingle-seasonschoolrecordsforbothoverallgoalsandgoalspergameasitaveragedoveronegoalpergamemorethanlastseason.TheColonials’progressonthedefensiveendwasevenmoreevidentasRMUwasoneofeightsquadsnationallytoallowfewerthantwogoalspergameasRobertMorrisallowedapproximately1.90goalspergamefewerthanitconcededduringthe2010-11season. Athletes of the Month SophomoreforwardRebeccaVintandseniorgoaltenderKristenDiCioccooftheRobertMorrisUniversitywomen’shockeyteamwillbeginthesecondhalfoftheseasononahighnoteastheduotookhomeCollegeHockeyAmerica(CHA)PlayerandGoaltenderoftheMonthhonors. TheawardmarksthesecondPlayeroftheMonthhonorforVintthisseasonassheearnsback-to-backmonthlyaccoladeswhileDiCioccoearnsherfirstGoal-tenderoftheMonthawardoftheyear. InthemonthofDecember,Vinttalliedonegoalanddishedoutfiveassistsinthreegames.Mostlynotably,VintregisteredfourpointsintheColonialsfirstprogramsweepofNo.4Merychurst.ThesweepovertheLakersalsomarkedRMU’sfirstsweepofanopponentrankedinthenationaltop-10. DiCioccoleadRMUtoa2-1recordinthemonthofDecemberwhileholdingCHApowerhouseMercyhursttoasinglegoalineachcontestoftheseries,whichmarksafirstforaColonialgoaltendinginRMUhistory.ThroughoutthethreegamesinDecember,theseniorplayed179minutestoregistera2.01goalsagainstaveragewhilestopping85shotsfora.934savepercentage.

Coach of the Year Shortlyafterthe2011-12seasoncametoanendintremendousfashion,theRMUhockeyprogramreceivedmorefantasticnews.First-yearheadcoachPaulColontinowasselectedastheNationalCoachoftheYearbyU.S.CollegeHockeyOnline(USCHO).OntopofwinningNationalCoachoftheYear,Colon-tinowasalsonameCHACoachoftheYear. “It’sagreathonortoreceiverecognitionlikethis,”Colontinosaid.“It’sdefinitelysomethingthatIthinkthewholeprogramcansharein--theassistantcoaches,thestaffandtheplayers.Alotofgreatcoacheshadgreatseasonsacrossthenationthisyear,sothatobviouslymakesitveryspecialthatRobertMorriswaspickedforthisaward.”

Distinguished DiCiocco GoaltenderKristenDiCioccobecamejustthesecondColonialsintheyounghistoryoftheprogramtogarnerfirst-teamall-conferencerecognition.Afteranimpressiveregularseason,DiCioccoalsoclaimedtheRegular-SeasonGoaltendingTrophy.Thejuniorgoaliereceivedthestartingnodon28seperateoc-casionsinRMU30gameseason.SheledtheCHAinbothgoalsagainstaverage(1.96),ranking11thnationally,andsavepercentage(.926)attheconclusionoftheregularseason.SheloweredherGAAto1.92inleagueplayandonlyallowed14even-strengthgoalsin12conferencegamesplayed.Duringthemiddleportionoftheseason,DiCioccobecamethefirstColonialevertowinhonorsinfourconsecutiveweeksinwhichRMUhittheice.DiCioccoalsotiedtheRMUrecordformostsingle-seasonCHAweeklyhonorsbyagoalie(five),matchingthemarkthatassistantcoachBrianneMcLaughlinsetin2006-07.

Back-to-Back CHA Rookies of the Year AfterTheaImbrognobecamethefirststudent-athleteinprogramhistorytowinamajorpostseasonleagueawardasshewasnamedtheCHARookieoftheYearin2011,oneshortyearlateranotherRMUfreshmanwouldtakehomethehonor.InMarch2012,theCHAannouncedfreshmanforwardRebeccaVintastheRookieoftheYear. Vinthadthebestoffensiveseasoninprogramhistorydespitebeingbrandnewtothecollegiategame.ShebrokeRMU’ssingle-seasonrecordsinpoints(42),goals(21)andassists(21)asshebecamethefirstColonialtoeverreach40pointsor20goalsinacampaign.Vint,whowasalsonamedtotheCHA’sAll-RookieTeam,broketheColonials’recordformostin-seasonawardsinacampaignassheearnedtwoPlayeroftheWeekhonorsfromtheCHA,twoRookieoftheMonthaccoladesandsixRookieoftheWeekawards.Vintexplodedontothescenewhenshescoredineachoftheteam’sopeningsixgames,markingthefirsttimeeverthataColonialhadscoredinanysixconsecutivegames.Sheresetthelongestpointstreakinschoolhistory(12)andposted13multi-pointgamesandsixmulti-goaloutings.Vintsitsfourthnationallyinpointspergameamongrookieswith1.40andistiedforthirdnationallyingoalsbyrookies.Vint,wholeadstheleagueandisamongthetop10nationallyoverallingame-winninggoals,alsoledtheteaminpointsinCHAplay.Vinttalliedaseason-bestfourpointsinagameOct.21atRPIandalsoassistedonboththetyingandwinninggoalsinRMU’slatecomebackvictoryoverMercyhurst.

Welcome to the CHA Duringtheoffseason,CollegeHockeyAmericahasexpandedfromafourteamleaguetoasixteamleague.LongtimeCHAmemberNiagaraUniversitydroppeditswomen’shockeyprogramwhichopenedaslotforanewteam.LastseasontheCHAannoucedPennStatewouldjointheconferenceforitsinnaguralDivisionIyear.TheCHAdecidedtoexpandtoasixteamleaguewhenLindenwoodUniversityandRITshowedinterestinjoiningtheconference.TheexpansionoftheconferencewillallowtheCHATourna-mentstructuretochangeallowingtheTournamenttobeplayedoveraneightdayspan.

New Teams, New Tournament ForthefirsttimeinCHAhistory,hostingofthepost-seasontournamentwillbeawardedtotheteamthatfinishestheregularseasonwithbestconferencerecord.Thetournamentwillbereformattedfortheupcomingseasonasallsixconferencesquadswilltakepartintheevent.Thetoptwoteamsintheregularseasonwillreceivebyestothesemifinalroundwhilethefourremainingsquadscompeteagainstoneanotherinthefirstround.Thethirdseedwillhostthesixthseedandthefourthseedwillhostthefifthseedinbest-of-threeseriesFriday,March1,throughSunday,March3.Teamswillbereseededafterthefirstround,andtheregular-seasonchampionwillthenhostthesemifi-nalsandchampionshipFriday,March8,andSaturday,March9.

ColontinoledRobertMorriswomen’shockeytounprecedentedheights.HehelpedRMUbreakitsprogramrecordforwinsbytheendofJanuaryandfinishedtheseasonwith19victories,anamazing13-winimprovementfromthepriorseason.Despitebeingpickedtofinishlastintheleagueafterthelossoftheprogram’sall-timeleadingscorer,RMUpostedthehighest-everfinishinleagueplayunderColontino’sguidance,withthemostCHAwinsandpointsever,andalsoresetschoolrecordsforlongestwinningstreakandlongestunbeatenstreakduringthecourseoftheseason.

Colontino,whopreviouslyhadclaimedCHACoachoftheYearhonors,ledthesquadtooneofthebiggestregular-seasonwinsinprogramhistoryJan.21whenRobertMorrisscoredtwiceinthefinalthreeminutestodefeatconferencepowerhouseMercyhurstforthefirsttimeever.ThevictorynotonlyendedtheLakers’28-gameconferenceunbeatenstreak,butitwouldserveasaharbingerofthingstocomefortheColonials.

RMUenteredthe2012CHATournamentasthesecondseed,butwithtop-seededMercyhursthavingwonninestraighttournamenttitles,theLakerswereclearlystilltheteamtobeat.AfterdispatchingofNiagarainthesemifinals,RobertMorrisandMercyhurstmetwiththechampionshipontheline.TheColonialsopenedupatwo-goalleadwithinthefirst12minutesandneverletMercyhurstpullevenasRMUheldonfora3-2wintodethronethelongtimeCHAchampions.

RobertMorris’successoccurredduetodramaticimprovementsonbothendsoftheice.RMUbrokethesingle-seasonschoolrecordsforbothoverallgoalsandgoalspergameasitaveragedoveronegoalpergamemorethanlastseason.TheColonials’progressonthedefensiveendwasevenmoreevidentasRMUwasoneofeightsquadsnationallytoallowfewerthantwogoalspergameasRobertMorrisallowedapproximately1.90goalspergamefewerthanitconcededduringthe2010-11season.

BeforecomingtoRobertMorris,ColontinohadservedasassociateheadcoachatMercyhurstsince2006.AtMercyhursthehelpedguideteamstotheNCAATournamentineachofhisfiveyears,includingearningtwoFrozenFourberths,andhasoveradecadeofwomen’shockeycoachingexperienceattheDivisionIlevel.

InColontino’sfiveseasonswithMercyhurst,theLakerspostedanoverallrecordof148-25-9(.838),advancedtothenationalchampionshipgameonce,madetwoFrozenFourappearances,qualifiedfortheNCAATournamentfivetimes,wererankedNo.1nationallyineachseasonandwonfiveCollegeHockeyAmerica(CHA)tournamentchampionshipsandfiveregular-seasontitles.ImmediatelyafterColontinoreturnedtoMercyhurstasassociateheadcoach,theLakerswent32-2-3in2006-07,claimingtheprogramrecordforvictories,astheyregisteredanine-winimprovementfromthepreviousseasonandwererankedNo.1nationallyfor13weeks.Afteraone-goallossintheNCAATournamenttotheeventualnationalchampionsendedtheLakers’2007-08season,the2008-09squadreachednewheights.EnteringtheNCAATourna-mentona15-gamewinningstreak,Mercyhurstadvancedtoitsfirst-everFrozenFourwithavictoryoverSt.LawrenceandproceededtotopMinnesotainathrillingsemifinalcontesttomoveintothenationalchampionshipgameagainstWisconsin.TheLakerswererankedNo.1for23weeksthefollowingseason,went30-3-3andadvancedtotheFrozenFourforthesecondstraightseasonbeforesuccumbinginovertimetoCornell.
